If an outdoor light repeatedly switches on and off at night, its photocell may be detecting light from the lamp it controls—or light reflected from a nearby surface. It switches the lamp off, senses darkness again, and turns it back on. Daytime cycling points to a different common cause: reversed LINE and LOAD wiring at the photocontrol.
Why a photocell makes a light cycle
A photocell responds to ambient brightness. If the sensor can see the lamp it controls, the lamp may brighten the sensor enough to trigger an off cycle. Once the area goes dark, the photocell switches the lamp on again. A nearby light or light bouncing off a wall can create the same feedback loop. The fixture guide identifies reflected light reaching the photocell as a cause of continuous cycling, and Intermatic describes excess ambient light or the controlled lamp reaching the sensor as a typical cause of cycling at night (Commercial Electric fixture guide; Intermatic support).
Use the time of day to narrow down the cause
If it cycles mostly at night
Look for a direct or reflected light path to the photocell: the controlled lamp, a neighboring fixture, or a reflective wall or other surface. Intermatic lists excess ambient light and light from the controlled fixture as typical causes of nighttime cycling. Avoid opening an energized fixture while inspecting it.
If it cycles during daylight
Intermatic says daytime cycling typically indicates that the photocontrol’s LINE and LOAD connections are reversed. Treat this as a wiring issue, not a cue to shade the sensor. Turn off power at the circuit breaker before any wiring inspection or correction, follow the instructions for the specific model, and use a qualified electrician if you are unsure.

If the light is a dusk-to-dawn bulb
A dusk-to-dawn bulb contains its own sensor and needs continuous power, so its wall switch should remain on. Feit Electric advises against pairing its dusk-to-dawn bulb with an external photocell, motion sensor, or timer; check the instructions for your bulb before combining controls (Feit Electric bulb guidance).
What to check and try, in order
- Note when cycling occurs. Daylight cycling and nighttime cycling have different common explanations, so record whether it happens in full daylight, at dusk, or after dark.
- Inspect the sensor’s view from outside. Check whether it faces the lamp, a nearby light, or a surface that reflects light toward it. Do not open the fixture while it is energized.
- Change the light path only as the fixture allows. Redirect the photocell or fixture away from the source, or use the manufacturer-specified cover if one is supported. The Commercial Electric guide recommends relocating the fixture away from reflected light or using its optional photocell cover to address cycling.
- Check for overlapping controls. If the sensor is built into a bulb, leave the switch on and check the bulb instructions for restrictions on external photocells, motion sensors, or timers.
- Test only as the product instructions direct. A Commercial Electric guide test for a basic photocell is to power the fixture, cover the sensor and check whether the light turns on, then shine light on the sensor and check whether it turns off. Allow time for the response and do not expose wiring during the test (fixture installation guide).
- Get model-specific help if the problem remains. A sensor or fixture may need further diagnosis or replacement. Turn off power at the breaker before wiring work, and ask a qualified electrician for help if you are uncertain.
Choose a replacement only after checking compatibility
Outdoor photocontrols are a replacement category; for example, Intermatic lists the K4135 stem-mount thermal photocontrol for outdoor lighting (Intermatic K4135 product page). That does not establish that it fits a particular fixture. Identify the existing fixture and control, then check their documentation for a compatible replacement and wiring requirements before buying or installing a part.
