Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA squeaking dryer usually means one of three things: something is rubbing, a rotating part is wearing out, or the dryer is working harder than it should because of poor airflow or an unstable installation. The fix may be as simple as leveling the feet or removing debris from the drum seal, but it can also point to a worn belt, bad drum rollers, failing idler pulley, damaged front glides, or a motor and blower problem.
The practical answer: do not ignore a squeak that is getting louder, turning into scraping or grinding, coming with a burning smell, making the dryer run hot, tripping a breaker, or showing up with long dry times. Those are stop-use symptoms. Unplug the dryer, shut off gas if it is a gas unit, and inspect it before running another load.
In 2026, most dryer repairs in the U.S. land around $100 to $430, with many standard repairs near $180. Simple DIY parts such as belts, rollers, idler pulleys, and glides often cost $10 to $80, but the real challenge is accurate diagnosis and safe disassembly. On our job sites, we treat dryer noise as both an appliance issue and a building-safety issue because the vent route, closet clearance, transition duct, and wall or roof termination all affect heat, lint, and fire risk.
First: Read the Sound Before You Take the Dryer Apart
A dryer gives useful clues if you listen to when and where the squeak happens. Run an empty dryer for 30 to 60 seconds, then run it with a small damp load if it is safe to do so. Stand near the front, back, and side of the machine. Listen for timing, rhythm, and whether the sound changes under load.

A squeak right at startup often points to the belt or idler pulley. A rhythmic squeak or thump that matches drum rotation often points to drum rollers or roller shafts. Scraping near the front of the drum usually points to worn glides, felt seals, or debris trapped at the front bearing area. A high-pitched squeal with a hot smell may be a seized pulley, failing motor bearing, or blower wheel problem.
Before opening the cabinet, take care of the basics. Unplug an electric dryer. For a gas dryer, unplug the unit and shut off the gas valve before moving or opening it. Use gloves, safety glasses, a dust mask if lint is heavy, and a flashlight. If the dryer is stacked, tightly recessed in a closet, hard-piped for gas, or vented through a roof, the access risk alone may justify hiring a technician.
1. The Dryer Is Not Level or Stable
The simplest cause is also one homeowners skip. A dryer that is out of level can squeak, rattle, rub at the cabinet, or make the drum ride unevenly on its supports. This is common after flooring work, moving day, laundry-room remodeling, or when a dryer is pushed back into a tight closet and one rear foot lands on a hose, cord, tile edge, or debris.
How to check it
Place a 24-inch bubble level on top of the dryer from side to side and front to back. The bubble should sit centered both ways. Then press down gently on opposite corners of the machine. If it rocks, one or more feet need adjustment. Most dryer leveling feet can be turned by hand or with an adjustable wrench. Set the dryer solidly on all four feet, then recheck the level.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Also check that the dryer has not been overloaded. Heavy loads stress the belt, rollers, motor, and bearings. A residential dryer should have enough room for clothes to tumble, not pack the drum full. If the squeak appears only with bulky bedding or towels, reduce the load size and see whether the sound changes.
Typical cost
Leveling is usually a no-cost DIY fix if the feet still adjust. Replacement leveling feet commonly cost $5 to $25. If the laundry floor is badly sloped, soft, or damaged, the fix may be a carpentry or flooring issue rather than an appliance issue. On renovation work, we want laundry platforms and closet floors flat, solid, and able to carry vibration without telegraphing movement into walls or trim.
2. Lint, Coins, Screws, or Debris Are Rubbing Inside the Dryer
A squeak or scrape can come from foreign material, not a failed part. Coins, bra wires, pocket screws, hair pins, zipper pulls, and hardened lint can lodge between the drum and front or rear seal. We have also seen construction dust and small fasteners end up in laundry machines after remodels because the laundry room became a temporary staging area.
How to check it
With the dryer off and unplugged, inspect the drum with a flashlight. Run your hand carefully around the inside front and rear edges of the drum, feeling for trapped objects. Check the lint screen slot with a flashlight and a narrow vacuum attachment. Remove lint packed around the filter housing, but do not shove tools into the opening blindly because wiring and sensors may be nearby depending on the model.
If the sound is scraping at one point in every drum rotation, mark the drum position with painter’s tape and rotate it by hand. That can help you locate a warped seal, raised screw, or lodged object. If you recently had drywall, flooring, or cabinet work done, pull the dryer out enough to inspect the floor and vent transition too. Loose debris behind the unit can make noises that sound internal.
Airflow and fire risk
Lint is not just a noise issue. Dryer fires remain a real residential risk. National fire data has tied a significant share of dryer fires to failure to clean, and a federal residential dryer-fire report estimated about 2,900 residential dryer fires per year in its studied period, with 5 deaths, 100 injuries, and $35 million in property loss. If your dryer is squeaking and taking longer than one cycle to dry normal loads, treat the vent system as part of the inspection.
Professional dryer vent cleaning typically costs $80 to $185. Vent duct repair often runs $100 to $300. A new dryer vent installation can run about $200 to $800 depending on duct length, wall or roof termination, exterior material, concealed routing, and whether drywall or framing repair is needed.
3. The Drum Belt Is Worn, Cracked, or Slipping
The drum belt wraps around the dryer drum and motor pulley, using tension from the idler pulley. Over time, the rubber can crack, glaze, stretch, fray, or lose grip. A worn belt can squeak at startup, chirp during rotation, or produce a rubbery smell if it is slipping badly.

How to diagnose it
If the dryer motor runs but the drum does not turn, the belt may already be broken. If the drum turns by hand with little resistance, that can also point to belt or tension problems. On many dryers, confirming the belt condition requires removing the top or front panel. Before disassembly, photograph every screw location, wire connection, panel order, and the belt routing around the motor and idler pulley. Belt routing mistakes are one of the most common DIY reassembly problems.
Use the model number to order the correct belt. Belt length, width, rib profile, and routing matter. A belt that is close but not correct can squeak, slip, or fail early.
Typical cost
A dryer belt commonly costs about $10 to $40 as a part. Professional belt replacement usually runs about $60 to $190 in 2026. The higher end is common when the dryer is stacked, difficult to access, or when the technician replaces the belt as part of a maintenance kit with rollers and an idler pulley.
If the dryer is older and already open, replacing the belt, idler pulley, and rollers together can be more cost-effective than paying another service call six months later. That is especially true if the belt failed because a roller or pulley was dragging.

4. Drum Rollers or Roller Shafts Are Worn
Many dryers use rear or lower drum rollers to support the drum as it turns. When the roller bearing wears, the rubber surface flattens, or the shaft becomes scored, the dryer can make a rhythmic squeak, chirp, rumble, or thump. The sound often repeats with each drum revolution and may get louder under a heavy load.
What to look for
After the cabinet is opened and the drum is removed or shifted according to the service procedure, inspect each roller. It should spin smoothly without wobble, grinding, or flat spots. The shaft should be clean and round, not grooved or blue from heat. If one roller is bad, inspect all of them. Replacing only one worn roller on an older dryer can leave you with a different squeak soon after.
Avoid solving this with random lubricant. Many dryer support parts operate in a hot, lint-heavy environment. The wrong lubricant can collect lint, migrate onto the belt, or create a sticky mess. If the roller bearing or shaft is worn, replacement is the correct repair.
Typical cost
Drum rollers usually cost about $10 to $40 per roller for parts. Professional roller repair commonly runs $100 to $300 depending on the number of rollers, access, bearing condition, corrosion, and whether the shafts are replaced. If the dryer is more than 8 to 10 years old, ask whether a full maintenance kit makes sense.

The idler pulley keeps the belt tight. It spins whenever the drum spins. When its bearing dries out, seizes, or wears unevenly, it can produce a sharp squeal, chirp, or startup squeak. A seized idler pulley can quickly damage a new belt, so replacing the belt without checking the pulley is poor repair practice.
How to confirm it
Once you can access the belt path, rotate the idler pulley by hand. It should spin freely and quietly with no wobble. Any grinding, stiffness, side play, melted plastic, or belt dust around the pulley is a strong sign it should be replaced. Check the tension arm as well. It should move smoothly and hold proper spring tension.
This is where photos matter. The belt usually routes around the drum, motor pulley, and idler pulley in a specific pattern. A reversed or misrouted belt may still let the dryer run, but it can squeak, fail to turn properly, or chew up the belt.
Typical cost
An idler pulley or tensioner part often costs about $15 to $60. Professional repair usually falls around $90 to $350 depending on access, brand, and whether the technician replaces the belt and rollers at the same time. If a pulley has seized, replacing the belt at the same time is usually smart because heat and friction may have weakened it.

6. Front Drum Glides, Bearings, or Felt Seals Are Worn
Many dryers support the front of the drum on plastic, nylon, Teflon-type, or felt-covered glides. When those wear down, the drum can rub against the front bulkhead. The sound is often a scraping, squealing, or metal-on-metal noise near the front of the machine. This is more urgent than a mild chirp because continued use can damage the drum edge or front panel.
How to diagnose it
Look for black dust, plastic shavings, torn felt, shiny scrape marks, or a gap where clothing can catch between the drum and front panel. If clothes are coming out with brown streaks, black marks, or small tears, stop using the dryer until the front support system is inspected.
Glides and felt seals are model-specific. Some are riveted or clipped into a front bearing assembly; others are bonded or mounted as part of a larger support. Follow the manufacturer service diagram, and replace both sides if wear is uneven. A new glide on one side paired with a worn glide on the other can leave the drum sitting crooked.
Typical cost
Drum glides, felt seals, and bearing parts often cost about $15 to $70. Professional repair commonly runs $100 to $300. If the squeak has become scraping, do not wait. Drum or bulkhead damage can push the repair beyond the cost of the original wear parts.
7. The Motor or Blower Wheel Has a Problem
If the squeak is high-pitched, comes from the lower rear or motor area, continues even when the drum is not turning properly, or comes with a burning smell, the motor or blower wheel needs attention. The blower wheel moves air through the dryer and out the vent. If it is loose, cracked, clogged with lint, or rubbing its housing, it can squeal, scrape, vibrate, or reduce airflow.
Warning signs
Stop using the dryer if you notice a burning smell, hot exterior panels, repeated breaker trips, humming without normal drum rotation, weak airflow at the exterior vent, or dry times that suddenly double. Check the exterior vent flap while the dryer is running. It should open strongly. Weak airflow can mean a clogged vent, crushed transition duct, excessive duct run, blocked termination, or failing blower wheel.
For gas dryers, motor-area work is not the place to improvise. Moving the unit can disturb the gas connector, and poor reconnection can create a leak. For electric dryers, remember that a 240-volt circuit is involved. Unplugging is mandatory before opening the cabinet.
Typical cost
Motor and blower repairs often cost $250 to $550 or more professionally. This is where replacement math matters. If the dryer is near or beyond 10 to 13 years old and the repair approaches 50% of the cost of a comparable new dryer, replacement may be the better financial call. New dryers commonly sell around $500 to $2,000+, with many mainstream models in the $800 to $1,200 range before any electrical, gas, vent, or installation corrections.

Dryer Squeak Repair Cost Guide for 2026
Costs vary by brand, gas versus electric, local labor rates, part availability, stacked-unit access, after-hours service, and whether the technician replaces a single part or a full wear-parts kit. The table below gives practical U.S. planning ranges for 2026.
| Likely issue | Common sound | DIY parts range | Professional repair range | Urgency |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Unlevel dryer | Rattle, squeak, cabinet vibration | $0-$25 | $75-$150 if service call needed | Low, unless dryer is walking or damaging flooring |
| Debris or lint buildup | Scrape, tick, rubbing sound | $0-$30 | $80-$185 for vent cleaning | Medium; high if airflow is weak or dryer runs hot |
| Worn drum belt | Startup squeak, chirp, slipping | $10-$40 | $60-$190 | Medium; stop if burning rubber smell appears |
| Drum rollers or shafts | Rhythmic squeak, thump, rumble | $10-$40 per roller | $100-$300 | Medium to high as sound worsens |
| Idler pulley | Sharp squeal or chirp | $15-$60 | $90-$350 | High if pulley is seized or belt is overheating |
| Glides, bearings, felt seals | Front scraping, squeal, metal rub | $15-$70 | $100-$300 | High; drum damage can escalate cost |
| Motor or blower wheel | High squeal, hum, scrape, weak airflow | Varies widely | $250-$550+ | High; stop for burning smell, heat, or breaker trips |
For a normal squeaking-dryer service visit, expect a common total around $100 to $430. The wider real-world range is roughly $50 to $800 because a simple switch, belt, or cleaning visit is very different from a motor, control, or hard-access stacked-unit repair.

When to DIY and When to Hire a Pro
A smart homeowner can handle several checks before calling for service. The line is safety, access, and consequence. If the repair requires moving a gas dryer, unstacking a laundry tower, opening a tight closet with fragile flooring, working around 240-volt components, or correcting vent routing through walls or roof framing, a professional is usually cheaper than the damage from a bad repair.
Reasonable DIY checks
Start with leveling the dryer, reducing load size, inspecting the drum for foreign objects, cleaning the lint screen and lint slot, checking the exterior vent flap, and looking for a crushed transition duct behind the dryer. These tasks usually take 15 to 45 minutes and require basic tools: flashlight, gloves, bubble level, vacuum, screwdriver, and possibly a nut driver.
Moderate DIY repairs
Belt, roller, idler pulley, and glide replacement can be DIY-friendly on some standard electric dryers if you have the model diagram, correct parts, space to work, and patience. Plan on 1 to 3 hours for a first-time repair. Take photos at every stage. Keep screws grouped by panel. Do not force plastic clips. Vacuum lint from the cabinet while it is open, especially around the motor, heating element or burner area, blower housing, and lint path.
Call a pro now
Hire a technician if you smell burning, hear grinding or metal scraping, see smoke, feel unusually hot exterior panels, get repeated breaker trips, have a gas dryer connection to disturb, cannot pull the dryer out safely, or have a roof-terminated or concealed vent that may be clogged. Also call if the dryer is stacked. Unstacking without the correct method can damage the washer top, dryer base, flooring, wall valves, drain line, or gas connector.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Vent Safety, Code Notes, and Laundry-Room Construction Details
A squeak may be mechanical, but the vent system decides how much heat and lint the dryer carries. A restricted vent makes the dryer run hotter and longer, which accelerates belt, roller, idler, motor, and bearing wear. It also raises fire risk.
For permanent dryer exhaust ducts, use smooth metal ducting sized for the dryer, commonly 4 inches in diameter. Avoid plastic or foil duct as a permanent concealed vent. Transition duct should be listed for dryer use and should not be crushed when the dryer is pushed back. In wall and ceiling cavities, rough screws or protruding fasteners inside the duct can catch lint; use proper metal joints and fastening methods that keep the duct interior smooth.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Dryer exhaust should terminate outdoors, not into an attic, crawlspace, garage, soffit, or wall cavity. Keep the exterior hood accessible for cleaning and make sure the backdraft damper opens freely. Long duct runs, too many elbows, roof terminations, and concealed routes all increase maintenance needs. Manufacturer instructions and local code control allowable duct length, fittings, and terminations, so do not assume an old vent route is acceptable just because it has been there for years.
Permit requirements vary by city and scope. A like-for-like dryer replacement often does not need a major permit, but new gas piping, new electrical circuits, altered vent routing, wall or roof penetrations, and laundry-room remodel work may. When Bettesworth crews plan laundry spaces, we look at service access first: can the dryer be pulled out without crushing the duct, kinking a gas connector, damaging trim, or blocking the exterior termination from future cleaning? If the answer is no, the room may need a layout correction, not just a new appliance.
Should You Repair or Replace the Dryer?
Use the 50% rule as a practical starting point. If the repair is close to half the cost of a comparable new dryer, replacement deserves serious consideration, especially if the dryer is 10 to 13 years old, parts are hard to get, or multiple components are worn.
For example, a $150 belt and idler repair on a 6-year-old dryer usually makes sense. A $475 motor repair on a 12-year-old dryer with worn rollers, slow drying, and a questionable vent route is a different decision. In that case, compare the total cost of repair, vent correction, and future risk against a new dryer in the $800 to $1,200 mainstream range. If installation requires a new outlet, gas work, wall penetration, or code-compliant vent route, include those costs in the replacement budget.

Do not replace a dryer without inspecting the vent. A new machine connected to a crushed, clogged, or code-deficient duct can inherit the same long dry times and overheating problems. The appliance may be new, but the system is still wrong.
Common Mistakes That Make a Squeaking Dryer Worse
The biggest mistake is continuing to run the dryer after a squeak becomes grinding, scraping, smoke, heat, or burning odor. The second is replacing only the belt when a seized idler pulley or bad roller caused the belt damage. The third is using lubricant as a shortcut on parts that should be replaced.
Other mistakes are just as costly: forgetting to unplug the dryer, failing to shut off gas, mixing up belt routing, crushing the transition duct when pushing the dryer back, using the wrong belt profile, ignoring weak exterior airflow, and assuming every squeak is inside the appliance. In laundry closets, we often find the building detail is part of the problem: no room behind the dryer, sharp vent bends, inaccessible terminations, and flooring that lets the unit rock.
A good repair is not just quiet when you press start. It should dry a normal load in the expected time, exhaust strongly outdoors, sit level, run without hot smells, and leave enough clearance that the vent is not crushed after the dryer is returned to position.

A squeaking dryer is usually fixable, and many repairs are not expensive if caught early. Start with level, load size, debris, lint, and airflow. If the sound is rhythmic, inspect rollers. If it squeaks at startup, look at the belt and idler pulley. If it scrapes near the front, check glides and felt seals. If it squeals with heat, burning smell, humming, weak airflow, or breaker trips, stop using it and call a pro.
For most homeowners, the best outcome is a targeted repair plus a vent-system check. That keeps the dryer quiet, reduces heat stress on moving parts, shortens dry times, and addresses the safety issue that matters most: lint and heat in a poorly maintained exhaust path.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is it safe to keep using a dryer that is squeaking?
A light squeak for one cycle is not always an emergency, but stop using the dryer if the sound becomes scraping, grinding, or squealing, or if you notice a burning smell, hot panels, weak airflow, smoke, or breaker trips. Those symptoms can point to overheating, a seized pulley, motor trouble, or metal-on-metal contact.
How much does it cost to fix a squeaking dryer in 2026?
Most dryer repairs run about $100 to $430 nationally, with many standard repairs near $180. Belt replacement is commonly $60 to $190 professionally, rollers $100 to $300, idler pulley repair $90 to $350, glides or bearings $100 to $300, and motor or blower repairs often $250 to $550 or more.
How do I know if the squeak is the belt, rollers, idler pulley, or bearing?
A startup squeak often points to the belt or idler pulley. A rhythmic squeak or thump that follows drum rotation often points to rollers. A scraping sound near the front usually points to worn glides, felt seals, or a front bearing. A high-pitched squeal with heat or a burning smell may involve a seized pulley, motor, or blower wheel.
Can a clogged dryer vent cause squeaking?
A clogged vent may not directly create the squeak, but it can make the dryer run hotter and longer, which accelerates wear on belts, rollers, pulleys, bearings, and the motor. Weak airflow at the exterior vent, long dry times, and hot laundry-room conditions are signs the vent needs inspection.
Can I fix a squeaky dryer myself?
You can usually handle leveling, lint cleanup, exterior vent checks, and simple debris removal. Belt, roller, idler pulley, and glide repairs may be reasonable on accessible electric dryers if you have the correct parts and service diagram. Hire a pro for gas dryers, stacked units, tight closets, roof vents, burning smells, breaker trips, or motor and blower problems.
When should I replace the dryer instead of repairing it?
Use the 50% rule. If the repair approaches half the cost of a comparable new dryer, replacement may be smarter, especially when the dryer is 10 to 13 years old. A $150 repair on a newer dryer usually makes sense; a $500 motor repair on an older unit with vent problems may not.
