Brewed chamomile tea sprayed or poured on plants to prevent disease or deter insects, however, is not supported by the sources reviewed for this article. Those claims remain unverified, and the reasons are specific enough to matter if you are deciding how to spend your time and effort in the garden.
What the evidence says about chamomile tea on plants
The most common garden advice about chamomile tea is that it can prevent damping off in seedlings, act as a mild fungicide, or repel insects. None of these claims has been tested for brewed chamomile tea in the sources reviewed. Treat them as folk advice, not established plant care.
The closest related evidence: compost tea
The University of Maine Cooperative Extension addressed a related question in a June 5, 2020 answer about aerated compost tea on tomato foliage. Its statement is direct: “There is no scientific research that indicates or supports that compost tea is effective in controlling fungus diseases or insects.” That is a useful caution, but it is about compost tea, not chamomile tea. Chamomile tea is a different preparation, and the page does not test it. The honest conclusion is that compost tea has no supporting evidence as a disease or insect control, and chamomile tea has not been studied for the same purpose.
The 2023 chamomile disease study
A paper published July 3, 2023 in the Egyptian Journal of Biological Pest Control (Springer Nature) examined downy mildew, caused by Peronospora farinosa, on chamomile. It compared three treatments: Bio-Cure F, a thyme oil emulsion, and salicylic acid, including greenhouse testing. Chamomile tea was not one of the treatments. The study therefore tells you something about managing downy mildew on chamomile with those products, not about whether chamomile tea works on any plant. Its numeric results should not be read as evidence for tea.

Growing German chamomile in your garden
If your real goal is a garden that produces chamomile for tea, the plant itself is straightforward to grow. The sources reviewed focus on German chamomile, Matricaria chamomilla, which differs from Roman chamomile in flavour. Vermont Extension describes German chamomile as less bitter than Roman chamomile.
Site and soil
- Full sun. Wisconsin Extension recommends full sun.
- Well-drained soil. The plant tolerates poor soil, but drainage matters.
- Consistent surface moisture. The roots are shallow, so keep the upper soil moist but not waterlogged.
- Little fertilizer. Wisconsin Extension notes the plant needs little.
Sowing from seed
German chamomile is grown from seed. Seeds need light to germinate, so sow them on the soil surface and press them gently into the soil rather than burying them. Keep the surface moist until seedlings establish.

Harvesting and brewing
- Pick flowers when they are nearly in full bloom. Vermont Extension recommends this timing.
- Dry the flower heads in a single layer in a warm, airy, shaded spot until they are fully dry and crisp.
- Brew dried flowers in hot water, steeping for a few minutes, to make tea.
Drying method and steeping time are general home-preparation practice rather than figures from the sources, so adjust them to taste.
Pests and diseases chamomile itself can have
Chamomile is not pest-proof or disease-proof. Wisconsin Extension reports few pest problems beyond aphids, and North Carolina State University Extension advises monitoring German chamomile for aphids and notes it may be susceptible to powdery mildew. Plan to check the plants regularly, especially in humid weather or in dense plantings.

What to do when plants have a problem
Because the tea does not have demonstrated effects, use diagnosis-based methods instead:
- Identify the problem first. Aphids, powdery mildew, and damping off need different responses.
- Improve conditions that reduce disease: spacing for airflow, watering the soil rather than the foliage, and removing badly affected material.
- Check your local extension office for treatments recommended for the specific pest or disease you have.
- Apply any product only as its label directs.
How to use chamomile in your garden
Grow German chamomile for its flowers, its tea, and its value as an herb that suits herb and vegetable gardens and borders. Keep expectations on disease and pest control realistic: the evidence reviewed here does not show that brewed chamomile tea protects plants.
