Why Christmas tree bows work
A bow can draw the eye to the top of the tree or create a repeating accent throughout its branches. Ribbon also brings a different texture from glass, metal, or wooden ornaments, so it can make a familiar collection feel more considered without replacing it.
Bows are a styling option, not a decorating rule. The American Christmas Tree Association’s 2025 holiday décor trends describe oversized bows, bow toppers, and ribbon woven through trees, alongside traditional plaid and warm-neutral looks. That is a trend observation for 2025, not evidence that every household prefers bows.

How to decorate a Christmas tree with bows
- Start with the lights and ornaments you already own. Their colors and textures give you a palette to work with.
- Choose a bow color. Repeat a color already on the tree for a coordinated look, or add one deliberate accent color.
- Pick the scale and placement. Use one focal bow at the top, smaller bows among the branches, or a combination that feels balanced.
- Step back and adjust. Check the tree from across the room and move bows to even out spacing or avoid crowding one area.
Keep bows and lights safely apart
Decorations can burn, so keep bows, ribbon, and other decorations away from lights and heaters, and never put lit candles on a tree. The UK Home Office’s Christmas safety guidance, which applies to England, also says to switch off and unplug Christmas lights before bed.
For a real tree, the U.S. Fire Administration advises watering it daily, keeping it at least three feet from heat sources, and removing it after Christmas or when it becomes dry. Its holiday fire-safety guidance, citing NFPA, says almost one-third of home Christmas tree fires are caused by electrical problems; that figure is a fire-cause statistic, not a finding about bows.
