The right bouquet accents support the main flowers without competing with them. They can add texture, color, height, airiness, or movement, and help fill gaps. To choose them, start with the focal blooms and decide what the arrangement needs—not which accent flower is supposedly best.
What counts as an accent in a bouquet?
Floral-design terminology varies. West Virginia University Extension uses “button or accent flowers” for medium-sized blooms that attract the eye, while smaller filler flowers add texture, color, and depth around focal flowers. Delicate detail blooms bring airiness and movement. The Centre for Adult Education (CAE) groups the supporting roles more broadly as secondary flowers and filler flowers. Its guide describes filler as clusters of tiny blooms that fill gaps and create a soft, full appearance.
In practice, think of accents as supporting materials chosen for the effect they create. A stem may add a distinct bloom, soften a transition, provide height, or give the arrangement a looser outline. The label matters less than the job it does.
How to choose accent flowers and foliage
Begin with the focal flowers and their colors. As CAE floristry expert Jane puts it, “The colour palette of your focal flower will guide you on your choice of secondary flowers.” Then consider whether the bouquet needs contrast or variety in shape and texture. Texture can feel soft, smooth, glossy, fuzzy, rough, bumpy, or prickly; changing it can give a bouquet more visual interest even when the palette is simple, as Iowa State University Extension’s floral-design guidance explains.

These are options, not a required shopping list. North Carolina Cooperative Extension describes lavender, angelonia, seed heads, eucalyptus, and cornflower as materials for different effects. For supermarket bouquets, florist Jennifer Murphy told the Associated Press that eucalyptus or fern leaves can add texture and fullness.
How to place accents without crowding the focal flowers
- Set the outline. For a hand-tied bouquet, arrange greenery around the outside and base to establish its shape.
- Place the focal flowers. Distribute the largest or most prominent blooms with attention to balance and proportion.
- Add secondary or accent blooms. Use them to complement the focal flowers’ palette and introduce the shape, height, or texture the bouquet needs.
- Fill conspicuous gaps. Add smaller filler blooms where they support the shape, rather than filling every open space.
- Finish with delicate details. Add fragile, airy blooms last to reduce the chance of breaking their stems. Turn the bouquet as you work to check its balance from different sides.
CAE offers one starting recipe: one type of mass flower, three to four types of secondary flowers, and one or two types of filler flowers. Treat that as a prompt rather than a rule; scale, available flowers, and the style you want may call for a simpler or fuller mix. West Virginia University Extension’s advice is useful here: less can be more, and too many accents can crowd the focal flowers.

Keep the bouquet fresh as you arrange
North Carolina Cooperative Extension lists a container, flowers and foliage, and shears or scissors among the basic materials for a casual bouquet. Cut stems at an angle. Iowa State University Extension advises removing leaves that would sit below the waterline, using clean water and floral preservative, and checking the water; replace it if it becomes cloudy or develops an odor. North Carolina Cooperative Extension recommends changing the water every couple of days.
