Spotted lanternflies are bad because they combine several problems in one invasive pest: they spread by hitchhiking on vehicles and equipment, feed in large groups on plant sap, leave behind sticky honeydew that grows sooty mold, attract nuisance insects, and can impose agricultural, cleaning, quarantine, and management costs.
They do not bite or sting people, and they do not damage buildings the way termites or carpenter ants do. Their most serious documented agricultural threat is concentrated in grapes and other sensitive situations—not every tree, crop, or landscape plant. For construction companies, property owners, and site managers, the practical concern is preventing lanternflies and egg masses from traveling on trailers, trucks, machinery, firewood, outdoor furniture, and other movable equipment.
The short answer: the problem is the chain of damage
A single spotted lanternfly is mostly a nuisance. A large established population is more serious because its effects compound:

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Invasive spread: egg masses and live insects can move on vehicles, trailers, tools, furniture, firewood, and other outdoor objects.
- Group feeding: large numbers pierce plants and remove sap, stressing vulnerable trees, vines, and crops.
- Honeydew: the insects excrete excess sugar-water that coats surfaces and attracts other insects.
- Sooty mold and odor: the residue supports a dark fungal coating and can develop a vinegar-like smell as it ferments.
- Economic and quality-of-life costs: farms may lose yield or crop quality, while homeowners, businesses, parks, and job sites may face cleanup, monitoring, treatment, visitor, and compliance costs.
This is why the lanternfly is considered an invasive pest even though it does not kill every tree it visits. The harm depends on the host plant, insect density, timing, local conditions, and how quickly the infestation is detected and managed.
What is a spotted lanternfly?
The spotted lanternfly (Lycorma delicatula) is an invasive planthopper native to parts of Asia. It was first detected in the United States in Berks County, Pennsylvania, in 2014, probably after arriving on imported goods. USDA APHIS describes it as a hitchhiking pest because its egg masses can be attached to hard, sheltered surfaces rather than remaining only on host plants.

Egg masses may be found on vehicles, wheel wells, trailers, firewood, grills, outdoor furniture, bicycles, toys, landscaping materials, and equipment. Nymphs and adults can also enter or cling to vehicles and other outdoor items. That means a person does not need to intentionally transport a plant or insect to spread the pest; moving ordinary equipment can be enough.
That mobility matters to construction and property-management operations. A truck or skid-steer moving from an infested property to a clean site can unintentionally carry insects or egg masses. So can a trailer, generator, scaffold component, stack of firewood, outdoor sign, picnic table, or piece of stored equipment. Quarantine requirements vary by location and can change, so businesses should check the current USDA APHIS guidance and their state agriculture department before moving regulated items from an infested area.
1. They remove sap and plant resources
Spotted lanternflies use piercing-sucking mouthparts to feed on plant sap. In small numbers, feeding may cause little noticeable harm. In large aggregations, however, the insects can remove substantial resources from a plant and cause stress.
Reported symptoms on susceptible plants include oozing wounds, wilting, leaf loss, dieback, reduced yield or quality, reduced cold hardiness, and, in sensitive cases, plant death. The risk is greatest when many insects feed at once or when the plant is already under drought, disease, transplant, pruning, or other environmental stress.
The important qualification is that host range is not the same as equal damage. Lanternflies feed on many plants, including grapevines, hops, stone-fruit trees, and hardwoods, but evidence does not show that they uniformly devastate forests, orchards, or every landscape tree. Cornell IPM reports that significant damage has not generally been observed on most trees or agricultural crops, while grapes remain a serious and well-documented concern.
2. Grapevines are the clearest major agricultural concern
Grapevines are especially vulnerable because adults can swarm-feed on them. Cornell reports observations of as many as 400 adults on a single vine. Heavy feeding can reduce the vine’s stored starches and other reserves, weaken winter hardiness, reduce or eliminate the following crop, and in severe cases kill the vine.

Economic projections illustrate why vineyards and agricultural agencies take the pest seriously, but they must be read as projections rather than observed nationwide losses. A Cornell and Journal of Integrated Pest Management modeling analysis estimated possible New York grape-industry losses of approximately $1.5 million in the first year, $4 million in the second year, and $8.8 million in the third year if infestations reached Pennsylvania-like levels and no management occurred. Those figures describe a modeled no-management scenario; they do not mean every New York vineyard will incur those losses or that the numbers represent total losses across the United States.
Actual damage varies with crop type, insect density, timing, climate, vineyard practices, detection, and treatment. Prevention and coordinated extension guidance can reduce losses, which is why early reporting and inspection matter.
3. Honeydew turns a plant pest into a property nuisance
Lanternflies consume large quantities of sugary sap. They cannot use all of that sugar, so they excrete a sticky liquid called honeydew. The residue can coat leaves, decks, vehicles, outdoor equipment, patios, pets, clothing, hair, sidewalks, and building surfaces beneath an infested tree.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Honeydew creates several secondary problems:
- Sooty mold: a dark fungal coating grows on the sugary residue. On leaves, it can reduce the plant’s ability to photosynthesize. On fruit skins, it can make crops unmarketable.
- Attracted insects: bees, wasps, and other insects are drawn to the sugar-rich material. The lanternfly itself does not sting, but an infested outdoor area may have more stinging insects around it.
- Odor: fermenting honeydew can produce a vinegar-like smell.
- Cleanup: sticky surfaces collect dust and debris and may require repeated washing, especially around entrances, patios, vehicles, and public areas.
- Slip and appearance concerns: heavy residue can make walkways and outdoor surfaces unpleasant or potentially slippery, while mold and insect activity can make a property look neglected.
For a construction site, this may affect equipment staging, employee areas, temporary offices, parking, customer-facing properties, and landscaped sites under construction. It is not structural damage, but it can create a real maintenance and operational nuisance.
4. Large aggregations affect businesses and outdoor spaces
Spotted lanternflies commonly gather in large numbers while feeding or resting. A tree, fence, building façade, patio, vehicle, or park area can appear to be covered with insects during peak activity.
The lifestyle impact is more than visual. People may avoid outdoor seating or recreation areas, workers may need to clean equipment and surfaces, and businesses may have to address customer concerns. Vineyards, parks, tourism destinations, restaurants with outdoor seating, property-management companies, and facilities with landscaped grounds can incur costs for monitoring, cleaning, public communication, and targeted control.
The insects do not attack people, chew through lumber, weaken concrete, or bore into finished wood. A contractor should not treat lanternflies as a substitute diagnosis for termites, carpenter ants, wood-boring beetles, or moisture damage. Their construction relevance is primarily the movement of insects on equipment and the nuisance created on properties and landscapes—not destruction of the building itself.
5. Hitchhiking makes them unusually difficult to control
Many pests spread mainly through their host plant or natural movement. Spotted lanternflies have an additional transportation network: people and businesses moving outdoor objects.

Egg masses are particularly difficult because they can resemble a patch of gray or brown mud or dirt and may be placed on almost any smooth surface. A mass can remain unnoticed on a trailer, truck, wheel well, grill, piece of furniture, or equipment panel until that object reaches a new location. Adults and nymphs can also be present during the active season.
USDA APHIS has described spotted lanternfly populations in 19 states plus the District of Columbia in an August 26, 2025 update. Distribution and quarantine boundaries are geographically and temporally changeable, so a business should not rely on an old map or a rule remembered from a prior season.
Quarantines may require inspection, cleaning, documentation, or other compliance steps for shipments and conveyances. Agencies, landowners, growers, and businesses also spend money on surveys, public education, reporting systems, research, and treatment. Preventing one infested load or vehicle from starting a new population is usually less expensive than responding after establishment.
6. Why the insect is invasive—but not an automatic death sentence for every tree
“Invasive” does not mean simply “foreign” or “ugly.” An invasive species is introduced outside its native range and is able to establish, spread, and produce ecological or economic effects. Spotted lanternflies fit that description because they have a broad host range, can reproduce in their introduced environment, and can move efficiently on human belongings.
In their native range, natural enemies and long-established ecological relationships help limit populations. In North America, those controls are not necessarily strong enough to prevent outbreaks. That is one reason agencies emphasize preventing movement, finding new populations early, and managing damage rather than promising immediate eradication.
Tree-of-heaven (Ailanthus altissima) is a preferred spotted-lanternfly host and is itself invasive in North America. A stand of tree-of-heaven may provide a favorable reservoir, particularly near developed land, roads, and construction activity. Removing it can be part of a site-specific management plan, but removing tree-of-heaven alone is not a guaranteed solution. Penn State guidance notes that more research is needed to determine how tree-of-heaven removal affects nearby lanternfly populations.
What property owners and construction crews should do
Before moving vehicles or equipment
- Know the origin and destination. Check whether either location is in a spotted-lanternfly quarantine or regulated area.
- Inspect before departure. Look at wheel wells, trailers, truck beds, machinery, roof racks, grills, outdoor furniture, firewood, and other items that have been outside.
- Look for egg masses. Pay special attention to smooth, sheltered surfaces and places that are rarely cleaned.
- Remove insects and masses. Follow current state or USDA guidance rather than transporting a questionable item and hoping the insects will fall off.
- Document and report unusual findings. Photograph suspected insects or egg masses and contact the appropriate state plant-health authority or cooperative extension service, especially if the detection is outside a known infested area.
For a recurring operation, inspection should be assigned to a person, included in equipment-mobilization procedures, and recorded like other environmental or quarantine checks. A quick inspection is easier to perform before a truck leaves than after it arrives at a customer’s property.

How to dispose of egg masses
USDA guidance recommends scraping egg masses from the surface into a sealed bag containing hand sanitizer or rubbing alcohol, then disposing of the sealed bag in the trash. Use care when working around rough surfaces, ladders, traffic, and machinery. Do not simply brush a mass onto the ground or leave removed material in an open bucket where it can be moved again.
Because regulations and approved disposal instructions can differ by location, confirm the current state guidance when dealing with a large infestation, regulated shipment, commercial nursery stock, or work performed inside a quarantine area.
Use trapping carefully when nymphs are present
Penn State describes circle traps as a nonchemical option that can capture large numbers of nymphs as they climb suitable trees. A spotted lanternfly circle trap may be useful for protecting an individual vulnerable tree or reducing nymphs on a property.
That is a targeted management tool, not a proven eradication device. The 2026 Penn State management supplement cautions that the population-level benefit of circle trapping is unknown and likely limited. A trap may reduce the number of insects on one plant without stopping adults from arriving, egg masses from being laid elsewhere, or a regional population from spreading.

Do not use unprotected sticky bands
Unprotected sticky bands can capture far more than lanternflies. Birds, pollinators, mammals, reptiles, and other non-target wildlife may become stuck. If a property owner uses a sticky band in accordance with local guidance, Penn State recommends a wildlife barrier—such as suitable flexible window screening—around the adhesive area, along with frequent inspection and prompt removal of non-target animals.
In other words, the barrier is a safety requirement, not an optional accessory. A wildlife barrier window screening material may be used with a sticky-band setup only when the design still allows the trap to function, excludes or deflects wildlife, and is checked daily. Do not place adhesive directly where birds or small mammals can contact it, and do not leave a trap unattended for long periods.
Be cautious with pesticides and home remedies
There is no universal pesticide recommendation that is safe and appropriate for every tree, crop, life stage, state, and application site. Any chemical treatment must follow the product label and applicable state requirements, including restrictions involving food crops, pollinators, waterways, workers, and reentry intervals. For vineyards, orchards, commercial landscapes, or large infestations, consult the relevant extension or state agriculture authority.
Unproven household repellents and home remedies should not be presented as established control methods. A remedy that appears to kill insects in a small experiment may fail to protect a tree, create a hazard for people or wildlife, damage a surface, or violate a pesticide-use requirement.

What makes spotted lanternflies “so bad” in perspective?
The strongest case against spotted lanternflies is not that every individual insect is catastrophic. It is that a mobile, reproducing pest can create several kinds of harm at the same time:

- Plant harm: heavy feeding can stress susceptible hosts, with grapevines the clearest major agricultural concern.
- Indirect crop harm: honeydew and sooty mold can reduce photosynthesis or make fruit unmarketable.
- Property nuisance: sticky residue, mold, odor, swarms, and attracted wasps can make outdoor areas difficult to use.
- Business costs: farms, tourism venues, property managers, and businesses may pay for cleanup, monitoring, treatment, and customer-impact mitigation.
- Spread costs: egg masses and live insects can travel on ordinary equipment, making prevention and quarantine compliance difficult.
At the same time, responsible reporting should avoid exaggeration. Spotted lanternflies do not bite or sting people, do not automatically kill every tree, and are not known for destroying buildings or lumber. Their damage is real, but it is uneven and context-dependent.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do spotted lanternflies bite or sting people?
No. Spotted lanternflies do not bite or sting people. However, their sugary honeydew can attract bees, wasps, and other insects, so heavily infested outdoor areas may still have more stinging-insect activity.
Do spotted lanternflies kill trees?
They can contribute to dieback or death in sensitive plants when feeding is heavy, but they do not kill every tree they visit. Damage varies by host, population density, timing, plant health, and local conditions. Grapevines are the best-documented serious agricultural concern.
Recommended Free Tools
Can spotted lanternflies damage a house or construction materials?
They do not chew through lumber, weaken concrete, or bore into buildings. Their relevance to construction and property management is mainly hitchhiking on vehicles and equipment, plus honeydew, mold, odor, and insect buildup around outdoor areas.
What should I do if I find a spotted lanternfly egg mass on equipment?
Photograph the finding if appropriate, check current state or USDA guidance, and remove it before moving the equipment. USDA recommends scraping egg masses into a sealed bag containing hand sanitizer or rubbing alcohol and placing the sealed bag in the trash. Report suspected new detections to the relevant state plant-health authority or cooperative extension service.
Are sticky bands safe for controlling spotted lanternflies?
Not by themselves. Unprotected sticky bands can trap birds, pollinators, mammals, reptiles, and other wildlife. If used under current local guidance, they require a wildlife barrier and daily inspection. Circle traps are a less risky nonchemical option for nymphs on suitable trees, although they are not proven to eradicate a population.
The Bottom Line
Spotted lanternflies are genuinely harmful because their group feeding, honeydew, nuisance effects, and hitchhiking spread mechanism reinforce one another. Their worst documented crop damage is concentrated in grapes and other vulnerable situations, not distributed equally across every plant. For construction crews and property owners, the most useful response is practical: inspect vehicles and outdoor equipment, remove and properly dispose of egg masses, report unexpected detections, and use targeted traps or treatments only with current, wildlife-safe, label-compliant guidance.
