Why Some Red Japanese Maples Have Green Leaves

Many red Japanese maples fade to green in early summer, and for several cultivars that is expected. Here is how to tell normal seasonal greening from heat scorch or moisture stress, and what to check before changing anything.

Some red Japanese maples turn greener as the season moves into summer, and for many cultivars that is part of the normal pattern rather than a sign of disease or a care mistake. The shift is set mainly by the tree’s cultivar. Heat, sun and soil moisture can change how intense the color looks, but they do not usually explain why a tree goes from deep red in spring to green by midsummer. Brown, crisp or scorched leaf edges are a different problem, and they call for a separate check.

Which red maples green up, and when

“Red Japanese maple” covers many cultivars, and they do not share one colour schedule. Two university extension profiles describe the pattern for the same cultivar names used in nurseries, and the table below sets their descriptions side by side. Where a source does not describe a season, the cell says so.

Cultivar Spring Summer Fall Source
‘Atropurpureum’ Deep red Fades to light green in early summer Golden, orange or red University of Florida IFAS cultivar profile
‘Bloodgood’ Bright red new foliage UF/IFAS: darkens to dark green. Clemson Extension: keeps deep reddish-purple color through summer better than most cultivars Not stated UF/IFAS cultivar profile; Clemson Extension maple guidance
‘Crimson Queen’ Starts bright crimson May become bronze-green or red Not stated Clemson Extension maple guidance
‘Inaba Shidare’ Not stated Described as holding its color well Not stated Clemson Extension maple guidance

The two sources do not describe ‘Bloodgood’ in identical terms. UF/IFAS says its bright red new growth darkens to dark green, while Clemson Extension ranks it above most cultivars for holding deep reddish-purple color through summer. Read that as a relative ranking under typical conditions, not a promise that the leaves stay the same in every location. The same is true of ‘Crimson Queen’ and ‘Inaba Shidare’: the summer descriptions are comparative, and they depend on the tree’s site.

Neighbouring trees can therefore look quite different in July even when they were planted together. The University of Arkansas Extension’s Japanese maple question-and-answer frames this exact comparison, asking why one tree stays green all summer while a neighbour stays red. Cultivar identity is the first thing to establish.

Japanese Red Maple, 3 gal, Nursery Pot
  • Seasonal Color Display: Leaves stay red for most of the summer and turn greenish red during hot weather in the southern part of its range, with reddish fall color providing year-round visual interest
  • Compact Growth Habit: Japanese Red Maples typically have a compact and spreading growth habit, making them suitable for smaller gardens or as focal points in landscaping. They range from small to medium in size, with some varieties staying more compact than others
  • Distinctive Foliage: Japanese Red Maple trees are prized for their stunning and distinctive deep red or burgundy foliage. The leaves often exhibit a delicate, lace-like appearance, contributing to the tree's ornamental value
  • Attractive Bark Texture: The bark of mature Japanese Red Maples often develops an attractive, smooth texture with a grayish-brown hue
  • Hardiness Zones: USDA Hardiness Zones: Typically Zones 5-8

Why the color changes: the pigment balance

Leaf color in these trees comes down to two pigments. Chlorophyll is green. Anthocyanin is the red-purple pigment that gives young and some mature leaves their color. The University of Tokyo Graduate School of Science explains the seasonal change in these terms. Yumiko Higuchi, Assistant Professor in the Graduate School of Science, wrote in the university’s feature, whose information is dated September 2022:

“In trees such as the Japanese maple, chlorophyll is broken down in autumn when the weather turns cold, while anthocyanin pigment is synthesized, giving the leaves their reddish color.”

That explanation concerns autumn. It shows that the balance between the two pigments shifts across the year, which is why a single tree can be red in spring, green in summer and red again in fall. The reviewed extension guidance, however, does not explain the summer step in detail for each cultivar. What it does establish is that the greening is a cultivar-specific pattern, and that the timing differs by variety.

The same Tokyo feature also discusses what anthocyanin might be for. It presents protection from excessive light and warning plant-eating insects as hypotheses, and it notes that the insect-warning idea is still unresolved. Treat both as possible explanations rather than settled facts.

What light, heat and moisture do

Light affects how red a leaf looks, but it is not a universal fix. Clemson Extension notes that too much shade can make purple leaves greener. The same guidance warns that direct sunlight can scorch leaves in summer heat. UF/IFAS notes that hot summer weather can scorch Japanese maple leaves, especially in warmer zones, unless the tree gets shade or irrigation during dry weather. Moving a red-leaved maple into full sun to deepen its color is therefore a risk, not a default solution.

Moisture and drainage matter for foliage health. Clemson Extension recommends soil that stays evenly moist, is slightly acidic, is rich in organic matter and drains well. It advises irrigation in dry weather and dappled shade, and it warns against letting water stand around the roots. These conditions keep the leaves healthy, which makes it easier to tell normal greening from stress.

Normal greening or a real problem?

A gradual shift from red spring leaves to green or bronze-green summer foliage, on a tree that otherwise looks healthy, fits the normal pattern for the cultivars described above. A different picture calls for attention:

  • Normal: the color changes gradually over weeks, the foliage is evenly colored, and the leaves are full and undamaged.
  • Heat or sun damage: brown, crisp or papery patches appear, often on the side facing the afternoon sun, and they follow a hot, dry spell.
  • Moisture stress: leaves look scorched while the soil is dry, or the root zone stays wet because water pools after rain.

Color alone cannot identify a cultivar, so the first check is the tree’s name rather than its leaves.

How to check your tree

  1. Confirm the cultivar. Look for a nursery tag, a purchase record or a planting plan. If none exists, compare the leaf shape and mature form with the cultivar descriptions in the table above, and note that the table covers only a few cultivars.
  2. Photograph the same branch or view each month from spring through fall. A gradual, seasonal change is normal. A sudden, patchy change is not.
  3. In July and August, observe the tree in the afternoon. Note whether the crown or one side is exposed to hard afternoon sun, and whether the leaves there look burned.
  4. Check the soil a few centimetres below the surface. It should feel evenly moist, not dry and not soggy.
  5. After a heavy rain, look at the base of the tree. Water should drain away rather than pool around the roots.
  6. If the leaves are scorching, change one thing at a time, such as adding dappled shade or irrigating during dry spells, and then watch the next season before making another change.

Choosing a tree for steadier summer red

If a persistent summer red is the goal, cultivar choice is the clearest route in the reviewed sources. Compare candidates on four points:

  • Summer color retention: the Clemson Extension ranking for ‘Bloodgood’ and its descriptions of ‘Crimson Queen’ and ‘Inaba Shidare’ are the most direct guidance available.
  • Leaf form and mature size: the sources distinguish standard and dissected leaf forms and describe differences in size and habit, so match the tree to the space it will fill.
  • Site conditions: assess summer heat, afternoon sun, irrigation access and drainage before choosing or relocating a tree, and consider the local growing region.
  • Expectations: even a well-ranked cultivar still responds to its site, so set realistic expectations for its summer color in your own garden.

A tree that greens up in summer is not automatically a poor choice. If you value spring and fall red more than summer color, a cultivar with that pattern may suit the site better than one that holds summer red longer.
