Prayer plants close at night because their leaves follow a daily movement cycle. In Maranta leuconeura, the common prayer plant, the leaves lie more horizontally during the day and rise to a more upright position after dark. Botanists call this daily pattern nyctinasty. It is a normal part of how the plant behaves, not a sign that something is wrong.
What the nightly movement looks like
The pattern is consistent: leaves are more horizontal during the day and stand more upright at night. North Carolina State Extension describes this as a species-specific behavior of M. leuconeura, and University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture Extension notes that the closing typically happens in relation to light and dark. The movement tracks the day-night cycle rather than the plant’s watering or feeding schedule.
How the leaves move
The mechanism sits at the base of each leaf blade. Plant biology texts describe a pulvinus, a joint-like swelling that allows the leaf to change angle. Two pieces of the process are worth separating.
The pulvinus and turgor pressure
The pulvinus is fleshy tissue containing motor cells. Their movement depends on turgor pressure, which is simply the water pressure inside plant cells that keeps them firm. When the volume of water in these motor cells changes, the pressure shifts and the pulvinus bends, raising or lowering the leaf. Plant biology material (Plants in Action, Chapter 8, on physical cues for growth and movement) describes this turgor-driven mechanism for nyctinasty in leaves of this type.

The internal clock
A 2007 review in Plant and Cell Physiology (Oxford University Press) explains that nyctinastic movement is regulated by a circadian clock, an internal timing system that keeps roughly a 24-hour rhythm. The clock sets when the motor cells change volume; the turgor change is what physically moves the leaf. Keeping these two layers distinct helps explain why the movement is rhythmic even though it responds to light.
Is nighttime closing a problem?
On its own, no. Normal nyctinasty is not a symptom that needs treatment. Problems should be judged from the whole plant, using the signs below and the growing conditions covered in the next section.

| What you see | What it means for diagnosis | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Leaves lift upright after dark and lower again by day | Normal nyctinasty, documented for this species | No treatment needed |
| Leaves no longer move at all | Movement alone cannot confirm a cause; the sources reviewed do not describe this as a standard warning sign | Check light, moisture, humidity, temperature and water quality together |
| Persistent curling, drooping, yellowing, browning or leaf loss | Not explained by the nightly movement; extension guidance links these to growing conditions | Inspect the plant and conditions, starting with the factors below |
Growing conditions that matter separately
If the plant looks unhealthy, assess these conditions on their own terms. They are not explanations for the normal night movement.
Light
North Carolina State Extension says M. leuconeura tolerates low to medium light but does not tolerate direct sunlight. A spot with bright indirect light is the usual compromise.

Humidity and temperature
The same extension guidance says the plant is intolerant of low humidity, low temperatures and cold drafts. It suggests a humidified room or a pot set on a tray of wet pebbles. Keep the pot above the water line so the roots do not sit in it.
Watering
Arkansas Extension recommends keeping moisture even, because the plant cannot tolerate waterlogged roots and its shallow roots can dry out quickly. This is general extension advice rather than a fixed schedule. The right frequency depends on the pot, the potting medium and indoor conditions, so check the top layer of soil before watering.

Water quality
A University of Maryland Extension response notes that water quality can contribute to Maranta leaf problems, including water high in fluoride or with high mineral or sodium content. The same response cautions that the effect of low indoor humidity on yellowing or leaf shedding is difficult to pin down, so a single cause should not be assumed without inspecting the plant.

The mechanism of nyctinasty is well described, but the evolutionary purpose of the movement for Maranta leuconeura is not settled. Explanations such as conserving water or changing light exposure are plausible, but the sources reviewed here do not confirm them. Treat any single explanation as a hypothesis rather than established fact.

Quick Recap
Practical takeaway for growers
- Nightly upright leaves are expected and do not require action.
- If movement stops or the plant declines, review light, humidity, temperature, watering and water quality before changing anything else.
- Keep the plant out of direct sun and cold drafts, and keep the root zone evenly moist without waterlogging.
