The “facing forward” custom refers to traditional Japanese squat toilets, not to how people sit on ordinary toilets. Users squat over the opening facing the fixture’s raised front end. The practical explanation is simple: that is how the fixture is designed to be used. A historic example also shows how a low-built toilet suited squatting and the clothing of its time.
It’s a squat, not a sit
Traditional Japanese-style toilets are floor-level fixtures with an opening and a raised front end. The user does not sit on the fixture: they squat over the opening, facing the front. Japan-guide.com’s instructions for using Japanese-style toilets describe this orientation and posture.
This is not a general description of modern Japanese bathrooms. Japan-guide.com says Western-style toilets are found in almost all modern homes and hotels, while Japanese-style squat toilets are gradually becoming rarer.
Why face the raised end?
The practical reason
The orientation follows the fixture’s layout: face the raised front end and squat close over the opening. These sources establish the correct use, but do not identify a single inventor or definitive historical reason for the orientation.

A historical clue about clothing
The Japan Tourism Agency describes an Edo-period toilet at the Shimizu Family House as a low-built wooden fixture intended for squatting. Its account notes that clothing of the time, primarily the kimono, could be pulled up easily for use. This offers context for how one historic toilet suited its users; it does not prove that kimono clothing explains the origin of every Japanese squat toilet or its orientation.

The Japan National Tourism Organization says that correct use avoids direct bodily contact with the commode. That is a practical feature of the posture, not evidence of a measured hygiene advantage or a health benefit.
