Why Does My Samsung Remote Keep Flashing Red? Common Causes and Fixes

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A flashing red light on a Samsung remote does not always mean the batteries are low. The pattern matters: two flashes commonly indicate that a Smart Remote has lost its Bluetooth connection, while a light that remains on for about five seconds or longer commonly indicates low power. A SolarCell remote may also stay illuminated while it charges.

Identify the remote type first, then follow the matching fix below. Most problems can be resolved by replacing or charging the power source, resetting the remote, or pairing it with the TV again.

What the flashing red light means

LED behavior Likely meaning What to do
Flashes twice after a button press Bluetooth connection to the TV has been lost Re-pair the Smart Remote
Remains on for about five seconds or longer Low remote battery Replace the batteries or charge the SolarCell remote
Stays on while connected by USB-C Charging is in progress Leave it connected until the light turns off
Flashes but the TV does not respond Low power, failed pairing, blocked sensor, stuck button, or a fault Reset, power-check, pair, and test the signal
Flashes continuously without button presses Possible stuck button, debris, liquid damage, or internal failure Inspect the buttons and seek replacement or service if needed

These meanings come primarily from Samsung’s Smart Remote guidance and may not apply identically to every older infrared-only remote. See Samsung’s Smart Remote LED guide for model-specific details.

First, identify your Samsung remote

Standard battery-powered remote

This type normally has a replaceable battery compartment and primarily uses infrared. Depending on the model, it may take AA or AAA batteries. Check the markings inside the compartment rather than assuming the size.

Samsung Smart Remote

A Smart Remote is usually slim and includes a navigation pad, smart-TV buttons, and often a microphone button. It uses Bluetooth for many smart functions, although some commands may continue to work through infrared when Bluetooth pairing is lost.

SolarCell remote

A SolarCell remote has a solar panel on the back and may include a USB-C charging port. It uses a rechargeable power system rather than ordinary disposable batteries. Do not buy AA or AAA batteries unless the remote actually has a replaceable-battery compartment.

Quick fix: replace the batteries or charge the remote

For AA or AAA remotes

  1. Remove both batteries.
  2. Check the contacts for dirt, corrosion, leakage, or bent springs.
  3. Insert a matched pair of known-good batteries, following the polarity markings.
  4. Close the compartment firmly and test the remote.

Samsung documents models using two 1.5-volt AA batteries and models using two 1.5-volt AAA batteries. Do not mix old and new batteries or different battery chemistries. Samsung’s battery replacement guidance provides model examples.

For SolarCell remotes

Place the remote with its solar panel facing a suitable light source. Charging speed depends on the light and the remote’s condition. If the remote has a USB-C port, connect it to a reliable charger for faster recovery. Samsung says the LED can remain illuminated during USB charging and should turn off when charging is complete.

On supported TVs, battery information may appear under Settings → All Settings → Power and Energy Saving → Available Remote Battery. Menu names vary by model, software version, and region. See Samsung’s SolarCell charging instructions.

Reset the remote

Battery-powered remote

  1. Remove the batteries.
  2. Hold the Power button for eight seconds.
  3. Reinsert the batteries and test the remote.

This is Samsung’s documented reset procedure. If the remote still behaves erratically, remove the batteries again, press several buttons to discharge residual power, and install another known-good pair.

SolarCell Smart Remote

For Samsung TV models from 2021 or later that use a SolarCell remote, Samsung documents holding Return/Back and Enter—the center button of the navigation pad—for 10 seconds. Pair the remote again afterward. Button names and compatibility can vary by model; Samsung provides additional instructions in its remote troubleshooting guide.

Re-pair a Samsung Smart Remote

  1. Stand close to the TV, ideally about one foot away.
  2. Point the remote toward the front of the TV.
  3. Press and hold Return/Back and Play/Pause together.
  4. Keep holding until the TV displays a pairing or connection message.

Samsung support pages specify different minimum times—three seconds or more in one guide and at least five seconds in another—so hold the buttons until the on-screen confirmation appears rather than relying on one exact duration.

If pairing fails, charge or replace the power source, move closer, aim toward the TV’s front sensor, and remove objects that could block it. Temporarily switching off nearby Bluetooth devices may also help. You can additionally unplug the TV for about 60 seconds, reconnect it, and retry the pairing process.

Why volume works but voice control does not

This is a common Bluetooth-versus-infrared symptom. Samsung Smart Remotes can use infrared for functions such as volume and channel changes, while Bluetooth handles voice control and other smart features. As a result, the remote may still change the volume even though it has lost its Bluetooth connection.

If volume or channels work but voice, navigation, or other smart features do not, re-pair the remote before replacing it.

Test whether the remote is transmitting

Samsung recommends checking the infrared transmitter with a digital camera:

  1. Open the camera app on a phone, tablet, or digital camera.
  2. Point the top of the remote toward the camera.
  3. Press and hold the Power button.
  4. Look for a colored light from the remote’s infrared emitter on the screen.

If no light appears after fitting fresh batteries, the remote may need replacement. However, some phone cameras filter infrared, so a failed camera test is not conclusive on every device. A successful test only proves that the remote is transmitting infrared; it does not verify Bluetooth, voice control, or every button.

Check the TV as well as the remote

The flashing LED is on the remote, but the underlying problem can still involve the TV. Try these checks:

  • Point the remote directly at the TV from close range.
  • Clear the TV’s infrared sensor area. It is often near the lower-right side or bottom center, but the position varies.
  • Remove soundbars, decorations, tape, or other objects that may block the sensor.
  • Use the TV’s physical control button to confirm that the TV itself responds.
  • Power-cycle the TV and retry the remote.
  • Check for TV software updates if the issue began after a system change.

Samsung’s pairing guidance includes additional sensor and connection checks.

Persistent flashing: inspect for a stuck button

A lodged, dirty, or damaged button can keep the LED illuminated or send repeated commands. Check the Power, Home, Volume, and directional buttons, but inspect the entire keypad. Remove the remote from under cushions or objects and make sure no protective film is pressing against the buttons.

Do not spray liquid directly into the remote. If it has been exposed to liquid or suffered an impact, continued flashing may indicate internal damage.

When should you replace the remote?

Keep troubleshooting when the remote responds after a fresh battery or charge, passes the infrared test, has no physical damage, or only needs Bluetooth re-pairing.

Consider replacement or service when:

  • Fresh batteries or a full charge make no difference.
  • No infrared signal appears using a compatible camera test.
  • Buttons remain stuck or physically damaged.
  • The remote has liquid or impact damage.
  • Bluetooth pairing repeatedly fails at close range.
  • The SolarCell battery no longer holds a charge.
  • A known-compatible replacement works with the TV.

Consider TV service instead if the TV’s physical controls also fail, several known-good remotes fail, the sensor appears damaged, or the TV cannot pair any compatible Smart Remote after correct troubleshooting.

Temporary ways to control the TV

The Samsung SmartThings app may provide temporary control while the remote charges or is replaced. It works best when the TV and phone are already connected to the same network and the TV can be discovered. It may not help if the TV is offline or frozen. Samsung provides information about app-based control through its Smart Remote support page.

You can also use the TV’s physical controls. If buying a replacement, use the TV’s complete model number—not merely “Samsung 4K TV”—to verify compatibility. An original replacement is the better choice when you need voice, Bluetooth, or model-specific functions. A universal remote may be suitable for power, volume, input, and basic navigation, but may not support Samsung-specific smart features.

Fast diagnosis by symptom

  • Two red flashes: Treat it first as a lost Bluetooth connection and re-pair the Smart Remote.
  • Light stays on for five seconds or longer: Check the battery level, replace disposable batteries, or charge the SolarCell remote.
  • Light stays on during USB-C charging: Charging is likely in progress. If it never turns off and the battery remains empty, try another compatible cable or charger.
  • Flashing with no response: Check power, stuck buttons, pairing, the TV sensor, and infrared transmission.
  • Volume works but voice does not: Re-pair the Smart Remote; infrared may be working while Bluetooth is disconnected.
