Why Does My Bose Soundbar Keep Disconnecting From My TV?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The most common reason a Bose soundbar keeps disconnecting from a TV is an unstable HDMI ARC/eARC and HDMI-CEC handshake. ARC/eARC carries the TV audio, while CEC coordinates power, input selection, and volume. A faulty cable, incorrect TV audio setting, firmware issue, competing HDMI device, or compatibility problem can make the TV stop recognizing the soundbar.

Check the connection and settings first, then perform a complete HDMI reset. If HDMI remains unreliable, test optical audio before considering a replacement soundbar.

First, identify what “disconnecting” means

  • The TV switches back to its speakers: The TV has probably lost or rejected the ARC/eARC audio connection.
  • The TV lists the soundbar but there is no sound: Check the selected audio output, input, audio format, cable, and CEC settings.
  • Sound returns after unplugging the soundbar: A stuck HDMI state or power-sequencing problem is likely.
  • Sound cuts out for a few seconds: Suspect the HDMI cable, audio-format negotiation, eARC, or firmware.
  • The soundbar turns on or off unexpectedly: HDMI-CEC, automatic wake, or power-control commands may be conflicting.
  • The Bose app cannot find the soundbar: This is usually a separate Wi-Fi or setup issue, not a TV ARC problem.
  • Only Bluetooth music disconnects: Investigate Bluetooth range, interference, and paired devices rather than HDMI.
  • Only one streaming box or console fails: That source may have its own audio-output or CEC conflict.

Fix the Bose–TV connection in this order

1. Use the TV’s ARC or eARC port

Connect the soundbar exactly as shown:

Bose HDMI OUT/ARC → TV HDMI ARC/eARC

The television port must be labeled ARC, eARC, or eARC/ARC. A regular HDMI input may carry video but will not necessarily return TV audio to the soundbar. Bose’s HDMI troubleshooting guidance and Smart Soundbar documentation specify the ARC/eARC connection.

Reseat the cable at both ends. During testing, remove adapters, HDMI couplers, switches, splitters, and unusually long cables.

  • SIMPLE SETUP: A single connection from this compact soundbar to the TV via an optical audio cable (included) or an HDMI cable (sold separately) has you up and running in minutes

2. Check the TV’s audio, ARC/eARC, and CEC settings

In the TV’s settings, look for options named:

  • Sound output or Audio output
  • External speaker, Receiver, or HDMI ARC
  • ARC or eARC
  • Digital audio output
  • HDMI-CEC

Select the HDMI ARC/eARC device as the audio output and enable ARC/eARC. HDMI-CEC should normally be enabled when you want the TV remote to control volume or the TV and soundbar to power on together.

CEC has different names by manufacturer. LG commonly calls it SIMPLINK; Sony uses BRAVIA Sync; Samsung commonly uses Anynet+. Menu names and locations vary by model year and software version, so search the TV settings for “CEC,” “ARC,” “eARC,” “external speaker,” or “audio output.” See LG’s SIMPLINK guidance and Sony’s ARC/eARC support article.

3. Try a conservative audio format

For diagnosis, set the TV’s digital audio output to PCM, or to basic Dolby Digital if PCM is unavailable. If the connection becomes stable, test Auto, Passthrough, Dolby Digital Plus, or other advanced formats one at a time.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

PCM is a troubleshooting baseline, not necessarily the best permanent setting. If dropouts occur only with Dolby Atmos or another high-bandwidth format, eARC bandwidth, format compatibility, or TV firmware may be involved. Standard ARC and optical also have different format limits from eARC.

4. Perform Bose’s complete HDMI reset

Turning the TV off with the remote may leave HDMI circuitry in standby. Use this full sequence instead:

  1. Turn off the Bose system, TV, and connected source devices.
  2. Unplug the Bose system, TV, and source devices from power.
  3. Disconnect the HDMI cable.
  4. Reconnect the cable securely at both ends.
  5. Reconnect the devices to power.
  6. Turn on the TV and source device first.
  7. Wait until they finish starting up.
  8. Turn on the Bose soundbar last.

This clears stored HDMI information and gives the devices a fresh opportunity to negotiate ARC/eARC and CEC. Bose documents this process in its no-audio troubleshooting instructions.

5. Replace the HDMI cable

A cable can be internally damaged or marginal even when its jacket looks perfect. Try a known-good High-Speed HDMI cable, with the shortest practical connection and no couplers or adapters. You do not need to buy the most expensive cable; the useful test is whether a reliable replacement resolves the problem.

6. Update both devices

For compatible smart soundbars, open the Bose Music app, confirm that the soundbar appears, and check for software updates. Update the TV through its own settings or the manufacturer’s support process. Restart both devices after updating.

Updates may improve device detection, source selection, or HDMI compatibility, but no particular update should be assumed to fix every Bose–TV combination. Older SoundTouch-era products may use different apps and procedures from Bose Smart Soundbar models.

7. Try Advanced CEC in the Bose app

Some Bose smart soundbars provide Advanced CEC settings in the Bose Music app. If the TV and soundbar select sources incorrectly, respond slowly, or power on unexpectedly, change one CEC option at a time and test several complete power cycles.

There is no universally correct CEC setting. Disabling or changing CEC may stop unwanted switching, but it can also remove synchronized power and TV-remote volume control. The Smart Soundbar 600 guide describes the model-specific Advanced CEC controls.

8. Disconnect other HDMI devices

Temporarily disconnect game consoles, streaming sticks, Blu-ray players, AV receivers, HDMI switches, and extractors. Test a minimal setup containing only:

  • The TV
  • The Bose soundbar
  • One HDMI cable

Test a built-in TV app and then one external source. If the problem disappears, reconnect the other devices one at a time. The device that brings the problem back may be issuing conflicting CEC commands or using an incompatible audio setting.

9. Test optical audio

Optical is the best isolation test when HDMI ARC/eARC remains unreliable:

  1. Disconnect the HDMI cable between the TV and soundbar.
  2. Connect the TV’s optical audio output to the soundbar’s optical input.
  3. Set the TV audio output to Optical or Digital audio output.
  4. Test several sources and complete power cycles.

If optical works consistently while HDMI fails, the soundbar is probably receiving audio correctly and the fault is more likely related to ARC/eARC, CEC, the HDMI cable, or device compatibility. Optical avoids HDMI negotiation, but it does not provide the same control signals or high-bandwidth audio capabilities as eARC. Bose explains the connection options in its support guidance.

10. Factory-reset only after isolation testing

A factory reset erases configuration and requires setup again. Do it only after checking the port, settings, updates, cable, HDMI reset, other devices, optical, and CEC.

Reset instructions vary by model. Do not use a button combination intended for another Bose product. Follow the instructions for the exact soundbar, such as Bose’s Smart Soundbar 700 reset procedure. Some products also provide a model-specific recovery mode.

When the soundbar probably needs service

Contact Bose or the TV manufacturer if HDMI and optical both fail, the soundbar repeatedly loses power, the app cannot find it after a reset, the problem follows the soundbar to another TV, or a known-good cable and alternate connection produce the same result.

Replace the soundbar only when testing shows that the fault follows the unit. A newer Bose model may still use HDMI ARC/eARC and CEC, so replacement alone may not solve an unresolved TV, cable, or compatibility problem.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the Bose soundbar disconnect after the TV is turned off?

Standby power can leave HDMI-CEC devices in an incorrect state. If sound returns after unplugging the soundbar, prioritize the full HDMI reset and test whether changing CEC or automatic-wake behavior stops the issue.

Should eARC be turned off?

It is a useful diagnostic test when dropouts occur with advanced audio formats. If standard ARC is stable, you can leave eARC off if you do not need its higher-bandwidth formats. Re-enable it if you require the features supported by your TV and soundbar.

Why does the Bose app show the soundbar while the TV does not?

The app connection and the TV’s HDMI audio connection are separate. The soundbar can be online and visible in Bose Music while the TV has lost ARC/eARC or selected its internal speakers.

Will a factory reset delete Bose app settings?

It removes the soundbar’s local configuration and requires setup again. Follow the exact reset instructions for your model, then add and configure the soundbar in the appropriate Bose app.

Does Bluetooth solve TV audio dropouts?

Bluetooth is not normally the preferred TV connection for these soundbars. It may avoid an HDMI problem, but it introduces pairing, range, latency, and control limitations. Use it mainly as a separate test rather than a guaranteed TV solution.
