A front-load washer usually smells because its sealed, damp interior holds moisture, detergent residue, or debris. The door gasket folds, detergent drawer, drum, and—on models that have one—the pump filter are the first places to inspect. Empty the washer, clean those areas, then run the model’s designated Clean Washer, Tub Clean, or Self Clean cycle with only the cleaner approved in its owner manual. Finish by drying and ventilating the machine.
The exact chemical and cycle instructions vary by make and model. A procedure that is correct for one washer can damage another, so the owner manual takes precedence over generic cleaning recipes.

Why a front-load washer develops an odor
Front-loaders use a flexible door seal to keep water inside while the drum turns. That seal makes the washer efficient, but it also creates enclosed folds where water and residue can remain after a cycle. If the door stays closed, the drum, gasket, and dispenser stay damp for hours. Moisture combined with detergent or fabric-softener residue can support odor-causing buildup.
Moisture trapped by the gasket and drum
Water can remain behind the gasket lip and on the lower part of the drum. A closed door prevents evaporation, so a musty smell may become noticeable even when the visible drum looks clean. The odor is often strongest immediately after opening the door or around the rubber seal.

Too much or unsuitable detergent
High-efficiency (HE) washers use less water than older top-load machines. Excess detergent, non-HE detergent, or too much softener may not rinse completely. The residue can form soap scum in the outer tub and feed further buildup. More detergent does not make a front-loader cleaner; use the amount specified for the load, water hardness, and washer.
Debris in the door seal
Lint, hair, coins, and small clothing items can lodge under the gasket fold. They retain water and may begin to smell. Inspect the entire circumference, especially the bottom fold, rather than wiping only the exposed front edge.
Residue in the dispenser drawer
Detergent and additives can remain in the drawer, its inserts, or the channel behind it. A sticky film or visible discoloration indicates that the drawer needs a separate wash. A dirty drawer can reintroduce residue every time detergent is dispensed.
Pump-filter or drainage problems
Some front-load washers have a serviceable drain-pump filter. If it is clogged, water may drain slowly or remain in the machine, leaving a persistent odor. Filter access and draining procedures differ significantly. Other machines have no user-accessible filter, so do not force a panel open.
Laundry left in the drum
Wet towels and clothing begin to smell when they sit in a closed drum. Removing a finished load promptly is one of the simplest ways to prevent the odor from returning.
A sewage-like smell
An odor that resembles sewage rather than damp fabric points toward drainage or plumbing. A kinked or partially blocked drain hose, an incorrectly installed standpipe, or a plumbing trap problem can allow unpleasant gases or dirty water to affect the washer. Cleaning the drum alone will not correct that fault.

Find the source before choosing a cleaning method
| Where the odor is strongest | What to look for | First action |
|---|---|---|
| Rubber door gasket | Standing water, slime, lint, hair, or a trapped object in the folds | Pull the folds back gently, remove debris, and wipe the seal and door |
| Detergent drawer | Clumps, sticky film, mold-like discoloration, or blocked inserts | Remove the drawer as described in the manual and wash the tray and inserts |
| Drum after a normal cycle | Musty smell with no obvious localized debris | Run the empty designated cleaning cycle with the permitted product |
| Lower service area | Slow draining, residual water, or debris behind a pump-filter door | Use the model’s shutdown and residual-water draining procedure before filter removal |
| Drain hose or standpipe | Sewage-like odor, gurgling, leaks, or incorrect hose position | Inspect the installation and contact an appliance professional or plumber if needed |
Before you clean: verify the washer’s instructions
Locate the make and complete model number on the door frame, rating plate, or control panel. Use the owner manual or the manufacturer’s support instructions to confirm four details:
- The name of the cleaning cycle: it may be Clean Washer, Tub Clean, Self Clean, or another label.
- Which cleaner is permitted: a washer-cleaning tablet, an oxygen-based drum cleaner, liquid chlorine bleach, or no added chemical.
- Whether the detergent drawer, drain filter, and gasket are user-serviceable.
- How to drain residual water safely before opening a filter or service panel.
Never combine bleach, oxygen products, acids, vinegar, or other cleaners. Use one product at a time and follow its label. Keep children and pets away from the open washer and cleaning products.
Step-by-step: clean a smelly front-load washer
1. Empty the washer
Remove every item from the drum. Dedicated cleaning cycles are intended to run without laundry; leaving clothes inside can expose them to concentrated cleaner or prevent the cycle from working correctly. Check the gasket and drum for small objects before starting.
2. Clean the door gasket
Open the door and pull the rubber folds back gently. Remove lint, hair, coins, and other trapped items by hand. Wipe the seal, the inner glass, and the metal lip with a soft cloth dampened according to the manual’s cleaning instructions.
LG’s maintenance guidance specifically warns that straight bleach can deteriorate its gasket. Do not apply undiluted bleach to any gasket unless your own manual explicitly permits it. Do not scrub with abrasive pads or sharp tools, which can cut the seal and create a leak.

3. Wash the detergent drawer and its inserts
Take out the drawer using the release tab or method shown in the manual. Rinse the tray and removable inserts in warm water, brushing away softened residue from corners and siphon openings. Wipe the cavity inside the washer before reinstalling the completely rinsed parts. If the drawer cannot be removed, clean the accessible surfaces without forcing it.
4. Run the correct empty cleaning cycle
Select the washer’s designated maintenance cycle and use only the approved product. The following manufacturer examples show why instructions cannot be exchanged between models:
| Manufacturer guidance cited | Cycle or product direction | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Whirlpool | Supported Clean Washer cycles use a higher water volume with a washer cleaner such as affresh or with liquid chlorine bleach | Only use the option allowed for your exact model and follow the product label |
| LG | The cited Tub Clean procedure calls for an oxygen-based drum cleaner | That guidance cautions against chlorine bleach or acidic cleaners in the Tub Clean cycle |
| Samsung | Run Self Clean with nothing in the tub | Follow the model’s instructions for detergent, drainage, and any required follow-up |
Do not add clothes, detergent, or multiple cleaners to the cycle. If the manual specifies a hot-water setting, use it; otherwise use the cycle’s built-in temperature and duration. A washer-cleaning tablet or oxygen-based drum cleaner is appropriate only when the manual and product label both allow it.
5. Clean the drain-pump filter when the model provides access
Some washers have a small access door near the lower front panel. Turn the washer off and unplug it before opening that area. Place a shallow pan and towels beneath the drain outlet, then drain residual water exactly as the manual describes. Remove the filter, clear lint and objects, rinse it, inspect the housing, and reinstall it firmly. A loose filter or cap can leak.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf your washer does not identify a user-serviceable filter, stop at the manual’s stated maintenance points. Do not remove panels or reach into the pump while the machine is connected to power.

6. Dry and ventilate the machine
When the cleaning cycle ends, wipe away residue if the manufacturer instructs you to do so. Leave the door ajar so the gasket and drum can dry. Open the detergent drawer as well when the design allows it, because ventilation prevents fresh residue from staying wet.

Use the correct detergent dose
Use HE detergent in the quantity recommended for your washer and load. If the bottle lists several dose lines, choose the one that matches the load size rather than automatically using the maximum. Reduce softener use if the manual permits and avoid products not approved for the appliance.
Remove laundry promptly
Transfer clothes as soon as the cycle finishes. If a load has already developed an odor, rewash it according to the fabric-care label rather than leaving it in the washer while you troubleshoot.

Vent the door and drawer
Leave the door slightly open between loads, provided children and pets cannot access the drum. Keep the dispenser drawer open enough to dry. This simple ventilation step removes the moisture that allows residue and odor to build.
Follow a model-specific maintenance schedule
| Maintenance item | Intervals described in manufacturer guidance | How to apply the interval |
|---|---|---|
| Whirlpool Clean Washer cycle | Monthly recommendation | Use the approved cleaner and cycle for the exact washer |
| LG Tub Clean cycle | One or two times per month in its odor guidance | Adjust for usage and follow the manual if it specifies a different schedule |
| LG dispenser and drain filter | At least monthly in its maintenance guide | Clean only parts your model identifies as accessible |
| Gasket inspection and wiping | No single universal interval stated | Inspect routinely, especially after loads that shed lint or small items |
These are maintenance instructions, not guarantees that every washer needs the same frequency. A busy household, frequent low-temperature cycles, or heavy softener use may require more frequent inspection.

What to do if the odor persists
After one cleaning cycle
Recheck the gasket folds, drawer cavity, and any accessible filter for hidden debris. Confirm that the machine actually completed its designated cycle and that no laundry was inside. Review the manual for a required second cycle or a different cleaner; do not improvise by mixing products.
After several cleaning attempts
If a musty odor or visible mold-like buildup remains after several correct cleanings, contact the manufacturer or an appliance professional. The gasket, outer tub, drain hose, or internal components may need service or replacement. Samsung’s guidance recommends support when odor or mold remains after repeated Self Clean attempts.
When the smell is sewage-like
Inspect the drain hose for kinks, blockage, leaks, and correct standpipe placement. Check whether dirty water remains in the drum after draining. If the plumbing connection is suspect, have a qualified plumber or appliance technician diagnose it rather than repeatedly dosing the washer with cleaner.
When the gasket is damaged
A split, hardened, or permanently stained seal can leak and retain odor. Stop using the machine if it leaks, and arrange model-specific gasket replacement or professional diagnosis. Do not try to mask a damaged seal with stronger chemicals.
