Both forms of four have historical precedent, and clock dials have kept IIII as a traditional design choice. Readability and visual balance help explain why it works on a dial, but neither establishes one definitive origin story.
What do IIII and IV mean?
IIII writes four additively: four ones. IV uses subtraction: placing I before V indicates one less than five. The Fondation Haute Horlogerie explains that Roman numerals served as a notation system, not a system for calculation, and that additive and subtractive forms both appear in historical practice. Modern readers commonly learn IV, but that does not make IIII on a clock inherently wrong. Fondation Haute Horlogerie, “Roman numeral IIII on dials”.
Why does a clock dial keep IIII?
A clock face is also a designed layout: numerals must be easy to recognize and sit comfortably around a circle. The Fondation Haute Horlogerie describes one specific readability reason. On a radiant dial, where III, V, VI, VII and VIII angle toward the center, it says IV can be difficult to read. This is an explanation tied to the placement of the marks, not proof that all clockmakers adopted IIII for that reason.
Bulova offers a separate aesthetic explanation: IIII can look more balanced opposite VIII. That is a manufacturer’s design rationale, not evidence that symmetry was the original or sole cause of the convention. Bulova, “Why do watches and clocks with Roman numerals use ‘IIII’ instead of ‘IV’?”.

Is IIII used on every clock?
No. Roman-numeral dials vary; IIII is common or traditional in some designs, not a rule every clock must follow. The available historical and design explanations support a flexible tradition, rather than a single universal practice. They do not establish popular origin stories such as a king forbidding IV or one manufacturing shortcut determining the choice.
What does a historic clock show?
The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s record for an English longcase clock by Joseph Knibb describes an hour chapter ring marked with Roman numerals I–XII and minutes marked with Arabic numerals 1–60. It illustrates how numeral systems can serve different functions on the same clock. The record does not explain why the maker chose a particular form for four.
