They are calculated using different rating methods, so the numbers are not contradictory measurements taken under identical conditions. If you are comparing portable ACs, compare SACC with SACC—not one model’s SACC with another model’s nominal figure.
What the two BTU ratings mean
Both figures describe cooling capacity in Btu/h, but they do not necessarily represent the same test method. A listing may show a nominal or industry capacity alongside SACC, the DOE metric used for portable-air-conditioner comparisons. Look for the rating label beside each number before drawing conclusions from the difference.

The Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers notes that shoppers may see lower-looking BTU figures on newer portable AC models because DOE requires a newer procedure for reporting capacity. Why SACC is often lower
A portable AC must move heat out of the room through an exhaust duct. DOE’s procedure adjusts cooling capacity for heat transfer from the duct and for heat entering with infiltration air, among other defined test factors. Those adjustments account for losses associated with how portable units operate, which helps explain why SACC is commonly below a nominal capacity figure.

DOE defines SACC, in Btu/h, as a weighted average of adjusted cooling capacity measured at representative operating conditions. The test procedure also specifies details such as duct setup, unit placement, condensate removal, and control settings. DOE’s portable-air-conditioner test procedure
Which number should you use when comparing models?
- Compare like with like: use SACC figures for both units, or compare nominal figures only when the labels and methods match.
- Check the duct configuration: note whether each model is single-duct or dual-duct. Do not assume a capacity figure is directly comparable without checking how the model is configured and rated.
- Treat the rating as a standardized comparison: it is not a guarantee of the temperature or comfort you will get in every room.

What the DOE date means for shoppers
DOE says standards established in a final rule published January 10, 2020, became required for compliance beginning January 10, 2025. This is a compliance date, not a claim that every listing uses the same label or that all products became identical on that date. When a listing shows two values, use the labels and rating methods provided for that specific model.

A lower SACC than a nominal figure does not show that the unit is defective: the values reflect different rating approaches, and SACC adjusts for portable-unit heat-transfer effects. Actual comfort also depends on the room and operating conditions. The DOE rating gives a standardized basis for comparison, not a promise for every space.

There is no single room-size recommendation established by these ratings alone that applies to every installation. Avoid selecting a unit from a square-foot rule without considering the room and installation conditions.
