They dressed up a prominent rooftop fixture, sometimes with colored or patterned glass. Some descriptions also say a ball could break or disappear after a lightning strike, prompting an owner to inspect the system—but the available historical records do not establish that as the ball’s original main purpose or a reliable way to detect every strike.
What the glass ball was for
Ornamentation is the explanation best supported by historical documentation. The National Park Service describes a common late-19th- and early-20th-century lightning rod assembly that included an air terminal, a glass ball, and a roof-mounted stand. Its illustration shows the ball and metal collars as parts of the arrangement, not as the components doing the electrical work of protecting the building. A Smithsonian National Museum of American History object record offers more direct evidence of decorative intent. It catalogs a lightning rod with a glass globe and weather vane, dated to about 1895; the globe’s mounting rings refer to John J. Cole’s 1893 patent titled “Lightning Rod Ornament.” That patent-linked design is strong evidence that at least some globes were intended as ornaments. Could the ball indicate a lightning strike?
Some accounts say a glass ball might shatter or fall after a strike, alerting the owner to check the lightning protection system. The Henry Ford and the National Depression Glass Association describe this explanation. It is best understood as a reported secondary function: those accounts do not establish how consistently a ball broke, whether it would respond to every strike, or whether this was its original design purpose. Don’t confuse a decorative ball with a glass insulator
Glass components on lightning rods did not all serve the same purpose. An 1891 trade-journal article describes glass ring insulators used to separate a lightning rod from the wall staples that held it in place. That is a distinct component with an explicitly stated insulation role; the historical sources do not establish that the decorative globe performed that function. What the evidence supports
- Ornamentation: supported by the Smithsonian’s patent-linked artifact record and the National Park Service’s account of historic roof assemblies.
- Strike indication: described in museum and collector accounts, but not established as reliable or as the primary purpose.
- Electrical insulation: documented for separate glass ring insulators, not for the decorative balls.
Old lightning rod balls are also recognized as collector objects; that does not make an antique globe suitable as modern lightning-protection equipment. The historical records describe their place in older assemblies, not their suitability for present-day safety systems.
