Some food containers can expose users to chemicals on California’s Proposition 65 list, and BPA is one possible example. But the warning alone does not tell you which chemical is involved or how much you may be exposed to. Check the full warning or ask the manufacturer or importer about the specific container.
Why warnings appear on so many containers
California’s Proposition 65 is a right-to-know law covering exposures to chemicals the state lists as causing cancer or reproductive harm. Businesses with 10 or more employees generally must provide warnings when covered exposures exceed applicable legal thresholds, subject to exceptions. That can lead to warnings across many products and brands; it does not mean every warned container has the same material, chemical, exposure route, or exposure level.
A warning indicates that the business issuing it is aware or believes that using the product can expose people to one or more listed chemicals. It does not, by itself, identify the chemical or estimate your personal dose. See OEHHA’s Proposition 65 consumer FAQ and its overview of Proposition 65 warnings.
Could the chemical be BPA?
Possibly. California’s Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) identifies some polycarbonate plastic food-storage containers, water bottles, dishes, utensils, and cookware as possible BPA sources. BPA can also be present in some can, jar-lid, and bottle-cap linings. This makes BPA a plausible reason for some food-container warnings, not a universal explanation. The warning or the manufacturer’s response is needed to identify the chemical for a particular item. OEHHA’s BPA fact sheet, updated April 2026, describes BPA’s listed reproductive-toxicity hazard and the basis for that classification. It does not establish that a particular warned container will cause illness or predict an individual’s risk.

How to identify what your warning means
- Read the complete warning. Some consumer-product warnings name the chemical and distinguish cancer from reproductive harm; short-form wording may provide less detail. The applicable wording depends on the warning type and rules.
- Ask if the chemical is not named. Contact the container’s manufacturer or importer and ask which listed chemical prompted the warning and what exposure route it concerns.
- Do not assume every warning has the same wording. Food warnings use separate sample language, including “Consuming this product can expose you to [name of chemical]…” for listed reproductive toxicants. OEHHA says a warning placed on food product labeling must be boxed and set apart from surrounding information. Its business warning examples include consumer-product examples; the older generic short form is being phased out for products manufactured and labeled before January 1, 2028. These are examples, not a single required text for every product.
What you can do when storing or heating food
- For food and liquid storage, consider glass or stainless steel instead of plastic. OEHHA advises: “Store food and drinks in glass or stainless steel containers, rather than plastic ones.” Its guidance does not rank glass against stainless steel or certify particular products as free of every listed chemical.
- If you use polycarbonate containers or tableware, avoid putting hot food or drinks in them and do not microwave food in them.
- Do not treat a “BPA-free” label, a recycling code, or the absence of a warning as proof that a product has no exposure to any other listed chemical. OEHHA notes that BPA has been detected in some products without a BPA warning.
These precautions address potential BPA exposure routes; they do not guarantee that any alternative product eliminates every possible exposure.
