A clicking sound from a wall can come from plumbing, ordinary movement in building materials, pests, or an electrical issue. Plumbing is a well-documented cause: pipes can shift against framing or supports as they heat, cool, expand, or contract. The sound alone cannot identify the source, so use when it happens and any accompanying signs as clues—not as a diagnosis.
What can cause clicking sounds in walls?
Plumbing that moves as temperatures change
Hot water and heating cycles can warm pipes, causing them to expand; cooling can make them contract. If a pipe slides or binds against framing or a support, that movement may produce creaking, squeaking, or snapping sounds. Heating-system pipes and components can also make noise at joints, connections, or contact points as temperatures change. The NIST/U.S. Department of Commerce home noise-control guide describes these movement-related mechanisms.
Water flow, pressure changes, or trapped air
Noise can also arise from water moving through piping, turbulence, pressure changes, or trapped air. Inadequate clearance where a pipe meets part of the building can let movement or vibration transfer into the structure. The NIST/U.S. Department of Commerce technical review of residential thermoplastic piping discusses these plumbing-noise mechanisms. A click or snap does not, by itself, identify which one is involved.
Other possible sources
Building materials can make ordinary sounds as they move, and pests or electrical issues may also warrant consideration. A click alone does not establish a leak, pest infestation, electrical fault, or structural problem. General household warning signs such as dampness, staining, buzzing, or animal activity may help guide an inspection, as noted by Oregon City Community Development.

How to use timing and other signs as clues
Notice the circumstances around the sound without treating any pattern as proof:
- After hot-water use: A sound following a hot tap, shower, or other water use may make plumbing movement or water flow worth checking.
- During heating or cooling: A sound that coincides with a heating cycle may point toward temperature-related movement in pipes or components.
- While water is running: A sound during flow may make plumbing noise a relevant possibility.
- Dampness or staining: Visible water damage makes a plumbing inspection more relevant.
- Buzzing near electrical components: Have the electrical system assessed by a qualified professional rather than opening a wall or electrical fitting.
- Scratching, thumping, or signs of entry: These clues make a pest assessment more relevant than a click alone. The EPA pest-control guidance recommends prevention measures such as sanitation, removing water sources, and sealing gaps; it does not treat clicking as a pest diagnosis.
Keep a brief note of when the noise occurs and what was happening nearby. This can help a qualified professional investigate, but there is no sound-only test established here that identifies the cause in a particular home.

What to do next
If plumbing seems plausible
If the sound repeatedly follows water use or heating, or you see dampness or staining, arrange an assessment by a qualified plumbing professional. Pipes concealed in walls may not be accessible to an occupant, so avoid opening the wall based only on the sound.
If you suspect pests
Look for corroborating signs such as scratching or evidence of entry. The CDC guide to sealing a home against rodents covers reducing entry points. If you find evidence of animal activity, contact an appropriate pest professional; a click by itself is not enough to conclude pests are present.

If you hear buzzing
Buzzing near electrical equipment or fittings calls for assessment by a qualified electrical professional. Do not remove covers or open electrical fittings to investigate an unidentified wall sound.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can pipe sleeves or bands stop the noise?
Resilient bands or sleeves at exposed pipe supports can help reduce vibration transfer when exposed plumbing is the source, according to the NIST home noise-control guide. This is a targeted approach, not a guaranteed fix for an unidentified sound. If the suspected pipe is concealed, it may not be directly accessible for a homeowner to treat.
