Tomatoes split when rapid internal growth outruns the skin’s ability to stretch. The usual trigger is heavy rain or watering after the plant has gone through a dry spell. The most effective remedy is to keep the root zone evenly moist, rather than letting it become very dry and then flooding it.

What causes tomatoes to split?

Tomatoes usually split when the fruit expands faster than its skin can stretch. The most common trigger is a sudden increase in water after the plant has been dry—for example, heavy rain or a thorough watering following several hot, dry days.

This is generally a physiological growth disorder, not an infectious disease. Rapid growth, high heat, strong direct sun, excess nitrogen, and a variety that is naturally prone to cracking can increase the risk. Even with careful watering, some large-fruited and heirloom tomatoes will still split.

Pattern What it looks like What it means
Radial cracking Cracks extend outward from the stem end toward the sides or bottom of the fruit. The skin has been placed under tension as the tomato expands.
Concentric cracking Cracks form rings or arcs around the stem end. The skin has split around the shoulder as the fruit grows.

These cracks are different from a soft, spreading spot, a fuzzy mold patch, or lesions appearing on leaves and stems. Those symptoms may indicate decay or another plant problem. A clean growth crack, by itself, does not mean the plant has a disease.

The main remedy: prevent drastic moisture swings

The goal is not to keep the soil constantly wet. It is to avoid the cycle of allowing the root zone to become very dry and then flooding it. Give the plant a steady supply of moisture so the fruit grows at a more even rate.

1. Check the soil before watering

Do not rely on a rigid calendar alone. Weather, soil type, container size, plant size, and the amount of sunlight all change how quickly a tomato plant uses water.

  • Check the soil near the plant rather than judging only by the surface. The surface can look dry while the root zone remains moist, or look damp after a brief shower without receiving enough water below.
  • When the root zone has begun to dry, water thoroughly so moisture reaches the main roots instead of applying a shallow sprinkle.
  • Allow excess water to drain. Waterlogged soil can damage roots and create a different set of problems.
  • Check container tomatoes more often because containers generally dry out faster than garden beds.

Approximately 1 inch of rainfall or irrigation per week is a useful general benchmark for home gardens, not a universal prescription. Sandy soil may need water more frequently, while heavy soil may hold moisture longer. Increase attention during hot, windy weather and after a period of drought.

2. Use mulch to buffer the root zone

A layer of organic mulch can slow evaporation, reduce the speed at which soil dries, and soften the change between hot, dry conditions and a heavy watering. Suitable choices may include clean straw, shredded leaves, or other garden mulch appropriate for your area.

Keep mulch slightly away from the stem rather than piling it against the trunk. Direct contact can keep the stem unnecessarily damp and may encourage pests or stem problems.

If you are assembling a prevention checklist, mulch for tomato plants is a practical moisture-buffering supply. It helps maintain steadier soil conditions, but it cannot eliminate cracking when weather changes are extreme or the variety is highly susceptible.

3. Deliver water slowly at soil level

A soaker hose or low-flow drip line can make consistent root-zone watering easier, particularly in raised beds or rows of several plants. The equipment is only a delivery tool: the important remedy is even moisture, combined with checking the soil and adjusting for conditions.

A soaker hose for garden beds can be useful where hand watering is inconsistent or where a sprinkler wets a large area unnecessarily. Position it so water reaches the root zone, observe how quickly your soil absorbs water, and adjust the duration rather than assuming one setting works everywhere.

Water at the base of the plant when possible. Overhead sprinkling is not the primary cause of splitting, but repeatedly wet foliage can increase disease pressure. Soil-level irrigation keeps the leaves and fruit drier while putting water where the roots need it.

Other factors that can make splitting worse

Excess nitrogen

Too much nitrogen can encourage fast, soft, leafy growth. Some extension guidance identifies over-fertilization—particularly excess nitrogen—as a possible contributor to cracking. Do not try to repair split fruit by adding more fertilizer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a soil test where appropriate and follow the fertilizer label or the needs of the crop. More fertilizer is not automatically better, especially when the plant already has vigorous foliage and growth.

Heat and sudden sun exposure

Heat can accelerate growth and increase stress on the fruit. Healthy foliage helps shade developing tomatoes, so avoid stripping away large amounts of leaves around the fruit all at once. Removing diseased leaves or correcting severe crowding may be necessary, but aggressive pruning can leave tomatoes suddenly exposed to intense sun.

Foliage management is a supporting measure, not a replacement for consistent watering. Moisture fluctuations remain the central issue in most cases.

Fruit size and variety

Large-fruited tomatoes and many heirlooms are often more likely to crack than varieties bred or selected for firmer, more crack-tolerant fruit. Varieties also respond differently to the same weather and irrigation conditions.

If splitting happens repeatedly, read variety descriptions for indications of lower cracking susceptibility and try alternatives suited to your local climate. Treat terms such as “crack-resistant” as a comparison, not a guarantee. A susceptible variety may crack under good care, and even a less susceptible variety can split after severe weather or a sharp change in water availability.

What to do when a tomato has already split

  1. Inspect it promptly. An open crack can admit fungi, bacteria, insects, and other decay organisms.
  2. Separate sound fruit from deteriorating fruit. A tomato with a fresh, limited crack is different from one that is leaking, moldy, foul-smelling, soft, or visibly rotting.
  3. Use sound cracked fruit quickly. Do not store it for a long period and assume the opening will remain harmless.
  4. Remove fruit that is rotting or moldy. Discard deteriorating fruit rather than allowing it to remain on the plant or in a harvest container.

There is no responsible one-size-fits-all safety rule for every split tomato. Severity of the crack, contamination, storage conditions, and the fruit’s overall condition matter. When in doubt—particularly if decay has spread—discard it.

A practical prevention checklist

  • Check soil moisture regularly, especially after hot weather, drought, or rain.
  • Water deeply enough to wet the root zone, but avoid flooding or leaving soil waterlogged.
  • Adjust watering for sandy soil, containers, plant size, temperature, wind, and rainfall.
  • Use mulch to slow evaporation, leaving space around the stem.
  • Consider a soaker hose or drip line for more even soil-level watering.
  • Keep fertilizer—especially nitrogen—within the crop’s actual needs.
  • Maintain enough healthy foliage to provide shade without ignoring genuine disease or pest damage.
  • Harvest and inspect cracked fruit promptly.
  • For future plantings, compare varieties described as less prone to cracking.

Does tomato splitting mean the plant is dying?

Usually, no. Splitting is a problem with the fruit’s growth and skin, not proof that the entire plant is failing. Improve the consistency of moisture, monitor the fruit for decay, and investigate further only if you also see symptoms such as widespread leaf lesions, stem damage, wilting despite moist soil, or a general decline in the plant.

What not to do

  • Do not flood a dry plant as a routine response. A large dose of water after drought is exactly the type of swing that encourages splitting.
  • Do not apply extra fertilizer to cracked fruit. Excess nitrogen may worsen rapid, succulent growth.
  • Do not remove all the leaves for better air movement. Sudden, intense sun exposure can add stress; prune selectively.
  • Do not assume calcium sprays will solve growth cracks. The practical evidence here supports moisture management and variety selection instead.
  • Do not treat a seed description as a promise. “Crack-resistant” means less susceptible under comparable conditions, not immune.

Bottom line

Tomatoes split most often because they take up water rapidly after a dry spell, causing the inside of the fruit to expand faster than the skin can stretch. Keep soil moisture relatively even with thorough, condition-based watering, mulch, and—where useful—soaker or drip irrigation. Avoid excess nitrogen, preserve sensible foliage cover, and choose less-susceptible varieties in future seasons. Pick cracked tomatoes promptly and use only fruit that remains sound; remove anything showing decay.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are split tomatoes caused by a disease?

Usually not. Most splitting is a physiological growth disorder caused by rapid fruit expansion after a sudden increase in water, commonly following drought or uneven watering. Heat, direct sun, excess nitrogen, and variety susceptibility can contribute. Other symptoms—such as widespread leaf lesions, stem damage, or severe plant decline—may point to a separate problem.

How often should I water tomatoes to prevent splitting?

A general benchmark is about 1 inch of rainfall or irrigation per week, but it must be adjusted for soil, weather, containers, plant size, and rainfall. Sandy soil and container plants may need attention more often. Check the root-zone soil and water thoroughly when it begins to dry rather than following a fixed schedule alone.

Can I eat a tomato that has split?

A tomato with a fresh, limited crack may be usable if it remains sound, but inspect it closely and use it promptly. Discard fruit that is moldy, leaking, foul-smelling, soft, or rotting. An open crack can admit decay organisms and insects, so do not store damaged fruit for an extended period.

Do mulch and drip irrigation stop tomatoes from splitting?

Mulch slows evaporation and helps buffer the soil against rapid drying, while a soaker hose or drip line can make root-zone watering more consistent. Neither guarantees crack-free fruit, and both work best when you still check soil moisture and adjust for weather and soil conditions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which tomato varieties are least likely to split?

Look for variety descriptions that indicate lower cracking susceptibility and choose plants suited to your local climate. Large-fruited and heirloom varieties are often more vulnerable, but no variety is immune. Good watering reduces risk without guaranteeing a crack-free harvest.

The Bottom Line

Tomato splitting is usually caused by rapid fruit expansion after uneven watering—not by a disease. Keep the root zone evenly moist, use mulch, avoid excess nitrogen, protect fruit with healthy foliage, and choose less crack-prone varieties when possible. Inspect split fruit promptly and discard anything that is moldy, rotting, or deteriorating.
