Why Are My Lemon Tree Leaves Turning Yellow? Causes to Check First

Yellow lemon leaves are a symptom with several possible causes. Check root-zone moisture and drainage first, then the pattern of yellowing, before reaching for fertilizer.

Yellow lemon tree leaves are a symptom, not a diagnosis. The most common starting points are the roots and the soil around them: the root zone may be too wet or too dry, drainage may be poor, or the soil may be alkaline enough to lock up iron. Cold or rainy weather, pests, disease, and root or trunk damage can produce similar yellowing. Check moisture and drainage first, then look at which leaves are yellow and whether their veins are still green. Those observations narrow the list far more reliably than guessing at a fertilizer.

Start with soil moisture and drainage

Watering is the first thing to examine because citrus can yellow in both directions. Persistently wet soil can keep roots from taking up nutrients properly. Drought can produce yellow or dull-green leaves that curl and feel leathery. UC ANR (University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources) advises letting the top three inches of soil dry before watering again and suggests a soil-moisture probe to check. That is practical guidance from California extension, so adjust it for your climate, soil, and whether the tree is in a container.

Practical checks you can make today:

  • Push a finger or probe into the root zone. If the top three inches are still damp, hold off on watering.
  • In a pot, confirm the drainage holes are open and that water actually leaves the container after watering. Water that sits in the saucer for a long time suggests a drainage problem.
  • Note whether the leaves are curled, stiff, or leathery, which fits drought stress more than waterlogging.

A moisture probe is optional. It tells you about moisture only. It does not diagnose root disease or a nutrient deficiency.

Read the pattern: which leaves are yellow

Where the yellowing sits on the tree and how the leaves look narrows the possibilities. None of these patterns proves a cause on its own, because they overlap with each other and with other disorders.

Pattern What extension guidance associates with it What to check next
Young leaves that are yellow between green veins Iron deficiency is commonly described this way. Alkaline soil can cause it even when iron is present, because the soil makes iron less available to roots. Soil pH and iron availability; whether the site is alkaline or poorly drained.
Pale or yellow foliage that is more uniform across the canopy, often on older growth Nitrogen deficiency can look like this. Watering history and recent rain; soil testing before adding nitrogen.
Yellow or dull-green leaves that are curled, leathery, or stiff Drought stress. Wet roots that cannot take up nutrients can also yellow leaves. The moisture check above, at the root zone rather than the surface.
Yellowing with dieback, visible pests, or damage on branches or trunk UC ANR lists mites and fungal disease among possible causes. UF/IFAS describes yellow vein chlorosis associated with root, trunk, or branch damage. Undersides of leaves for pests; branches and trunk for wounds, dieback, or decline.

Consider season, weather, and the planting site

Cold weather, prolonged rain, compacted soil, and poor drainage can all limit root activity, which reduces what the tree can take up even when the nutrients are in the soil. Ask whether the yellowing began during a cold or rainy period. Then ask whether the soil at the planting site stays soggy, hard-packed, or alkaline year-round. Seasonal yellowing that clears on its own is a different situation from yellowing that spreads and persists through the same conditions.

Rule out herbicide and other look-alike problems

UF/IFAS warns that “to the untrained eye, nutritional disorders may be confused with herbicide, fungicide, physiological, and stress-related toxicities and physiological disorders.” If yellowing followed a nearby herbicide or fungicide application, or drift from a lawn treatment, that timing matters more than the leaf colour alone. Note the date and product so you can compare it with when the symptoms appeared.

Test before correcting nutrients

Do not treat yellow leaves with fertilizer as a reflex. Excess fertilizer can cause harm, and nutrient symptoms can resemble other disorders. Illinois Extension recommends soil testing when chlorosis is suspected, and soil pH and nutrient availability testing can show whether iron or another nutrient is actually limited. If a deficiency is confirmed, extension sources point to a citrus-formulated fertilizer as the appropriate category; follow the label rates and do not exceed them.

When to get local help

The guidance above comes from California, Florida, and Illinois extension sources. Local climate, soil, water quality, and citrus variety can change the likely cause and the right care. Contact your local cooperative extension office or a plant diagnostic service if the decline is severe, spreading, or still unclear after you have checked moisture, drainage, and leaf pattern. Confirm local availability and fees before you rely on a particular service.
