Why a Makita battery will not charge
The pack is outside its charging temperature
A battery that was just removed from a tool, left in direct sun, or exposed to cold air may be outside the charger’s acceptable temperature range. The charger pauses rather than forcing current into a pack at an unsuitable temperature. This is the normal explanation for flashing red on the DC18RC.
Set the battery on a dry surface indoors and let it reach ordinary room conditions naturally. Do not put it on a heater, in an oven, against a radiator, or in a freezer, and do not try to bypass the charger’s temperature protection. Reinsert it only after it no longer feels unusually hot or cold. If the charger repeatedly gives a temperature warning when the pack has been indoors long enough to normalize, treat that as a service issue rather than repeatedly cycling it.
Dust is blocking the electrical or cooling path
Construction dust can collect around the battery contacts, the charger contacts and the cooling vents. The DC18RC manual lists dust-clogged terminals as a possible reason for alternating red-green charging, and Makita instructs users to keep the charger and battery cooling vents clean.

Look for compacted dust, chips or other visible obstruction around the slots and vents. Clean only by the method permitted in the relevant manual; do not scrape contacts with metal, insert a screwdriver or other conductive object, pour liquid into the charger, or open the battery casing. A contact that is visibly bent, burned, corroded or loose is not a home-repair task.
The battery, charger and tool are not a compatible set
Voltage alone does not establish compatibility. Makita’s published DC18RC list includes BL1802B, BL1830B, BL1840B, BL1850B and BL1860B batteries. Makita’s BL1830B product information states that the pack is for Makita 18V lithium-ion tools with a Star Symbol or a yellow battery receiver. Those details illustrate why the exact model and platform matter; they are not a universal rule for every Makita charger or battery.
Read the model printed on the battery, the charger and the tool. Check each manual or the manufacturer’s compatibility information for that exact combination. Do not force a pack into a slot, defeat a keying feature, use an adapter of uncertain origin, or assume that every 18V Makita product charges on every 18V charger.

The pack is worn or damaged
Lithium-ion packs eventually lose useful capacity, and physical damage can make a charge impossible. Makita’s DC18RC documentation identifies a worn or damaged battery as a possible cause of the alternating red-green indication. A pack that has a cracked housing, swelling, impact damage, leaking material, a burnt smell or unusual heat should be removed from service immediately and handled through Makita support or an authorized service channel.
Makita also advises stopping use when a tool’s performance has diminished to the point that it is no longer useful. Continuing to discharge a severely depleted pack can damage it further and reduce runtime and cycle life. Do not attempt to “revive” a pack by opening it, bridging its terminals, connecting it to another battery, or using an unapproved power supply.
The charger may be the failed component
A charger can be faulty, but the light pattern does not automatically identify it. Makita’s FAQ says that when a DC18RC flashes alternating red and green, “Most likely the problem will be the battery in this scenario.” That statement is specific to the DC18RC context and does not rule out every charger fault. A compatible comparison battery or charger can help separate the two, provided you change one component at a time and do not use an unverified substitute.
Safe troubleshooting sequence
- Record the exact models. Write down the charger model, battery model and, if relevant, the tool model. Photograph the labels if they are hard to read. This prevents a platform or model assumption from driving the diagnosis.
- Observe the charger without guessing. Plug the charger into a suitable supply, insert the battery as the manual directs and note whether the light is steady red, red plus green, steady green, flashing red or alternating red and green on a DC18RC. If your charger has a different model number or a different display, use its manual instead of the DC18RC table.
- Allow the battery to reach a moderate temperature. If it was just working, stored in direct sunlight or exposed to cold, remove it and let it normalize indoors. Do not heat or chill it artificially. Retry once the temperature-related delay has cleared.
- Inspect contacts and vents. With the charger unplugged, check for dust or debris around both sets of terminals and the cooling openings. Clean only as directed by the manual. Never insert a conductive tool or liquid into the charger or battery.
- Confirm the platform. Match the battery and charger model numbers against the manufacturer’s compatibility information. For example, verify that a BL1830B is being used with an eligible Makita 18V lithium-ion tool and charger, including the required Star Symbol or yellow battery receiver where Makita specifies it.
- Perform a controlled comparison if you have approved equipment. Use one known-good, explicitly compatible battery with the suspect charger, or one known-good, explicitly compatible charger with the suspect battery. Change only one item at a time and record whether the light pattern changes. This is a practical isolation technique, not a universal Makita test protocol; never borrow a charger merely because its voltage label looks similar.
- Stop when the fault persists. If the battery remains on alternating red-green, will not charge after temperature and contact checks, or shows physical damage, disconnect it and contact Makita support or an authorized service provider. If a charger behaves abnormally with more than one compatible battery, remove the charger from use and have it assessed.
How to interpret the main DC18RC cases
Flashing red after heavy work
This is the expected temperature-delay scenario when the pack is hot from use or has been sitting in heat. Let it cool naturally in a moderate environment, then try again. A delay that clears after cooling is different from a battery that gives alternating red-green after reaching room temperature.
Flashing red after cold storage
A cold pack may also be outside the charging range. Bring it indoors and wait for its temperature to normalize before inserting it again. Do not place it directly on a heater or use another improvised warming method.

Check for clogged terminals or vents and verify that the battery belongs to the charger’s supported platform. If the indication remains with clean, compatible equipment, the battery is the most likely failed component according to Makita’s DC18RC FAQ, although service should evaluate the complete charger-and-battery combination.

Steady green but the tool runs briefly
Steady green on the DC18RC means the charger considers the cycle complete. Very short runtime afterward points toward reduced battery capacity, tool load or another tool-side issue rather than a charger that is still waiting to charge. If the pack’s performance has fallen to the point that it is not useful, Makita’s guidance is to stop using it instead of repeatedly deep-discharging it.
What the symptom comparison can tell you
Compare four observations before deciding what to replace: the indicator pattern, the battery’s recent temperature history, the condition of terminals and vents, and the result of a controlled comparison with known-compatible equipment. A flashing red light after sawing in direct sun supports a temperature delay. Alternating red and green on a clean, room-temperature pack points toward a charge-impossible condition. A normal light with a different compatible battery but not with the suspect one makes the battery the leading suspect; abnormal behavior with several compatible batteries makes the charger worth service inspection. These are practical deductions, not a replacement for Makita’s model-specific instructions.

- Confirm the battery model and the tool receiver or platform requirements.
- Check whether the tool has the Star Symbol or yellow battery receiver when the battery documentation calls for it.
- Verify that the replacement is the same supported platform, not merely another pack marked 18V.
- Check current manufacturer information for availability and regional differences before purchasing.
Makita lists BL1830B with a stated charge time of 30 minutes and BL1820B with a stated charge time of 25 minutes. These are manufacturer product specifications for the stated products, not a promise for every battery condition or charger. Actual time can vary with temperature, battery condition and the charger being used. A substantially longer time is not automatically a defect if the battery was hot, cold or nearly depleted; use the indicator and the exact manual to judge the cycle.
Common mistakes that make diagnosis harder
- Using the wrong light chart: DC18RC colors should not be applied to an unlisted charger.
- Testing immediately after use: a hot pack can correctly delay charging, so repeated removal and reinsertion does not speed the process.
- Buying by voltage alone: the receiver, battery generation and charger list still have to match.
- Cleaning aggressively: metal picks, liquids and improvised contact repairs can create a short or damage the charger.
- Changing two parts at once: replacing the battery and charger together eliminates the evidence that would identify the failed component.
- Continuing after physical damage: swelling, cracks, odor or unusual heat calls for isolation and service, not another charging attempt.
When a replacement is justified
Replacement is reasonable only after the exact model has been checked, the pack has reached a normal temperature, visible dust has been addressed safely and a compatible comparison has narrowed the fault. A model-matched DC18RC charger or an exact-compatible 18V LXT battery may be appropriate, but do not buy either solely because the old unit is marked 18V.
Do not replace a battery that is merely flashing red after recent use; that indication describes a temperature delay on the DC18RC. Conversely, do not keep testing a pack with swelling, cracks, heat, odor or other damage. Isolate it from tools and chargers and ask Makita or an authorized service provider how to handle it. Product availability and suitability can vary by market, so confirm current manufacturer details before ordering.

Preventing repeat charging problems
- Keep battery and charger cooling vents clear of construction dust.
- Allow a hot pack to cool and a cold pack to warm naturally before charging.
- Use only the charger and battery combinations listed for the relevant platform.
- Remove a battery from service when its performance is no longer useful rather than repeatedly discharging it to the point of cutoff.
- Keep the manuals for the exact charger and battery available on the job site so another worker does not apply the wrong light-code chart.
- Store and transport packs so their terminals cannot contact conductive tools or loose metal objects.
When to contact Makita service
