A DEWALT 20V battery that will not charge is not necessarily dead. The charger may be holding the pack in a normal hot/cold delay, or the problem may be a switched outlet, poor seating, a failed battery, or a defective charger. Let the pack reach a safe temperature, verify the outlet, reseat the battery, identify the exact light pattern, and then cross-test with known-good compatible equipment before buying anything.
What a non-charging DEWALT 20V battery usually means
There are four practical possibilities: the battery is temporarily outside the charger’s temperature range, the charger is not receiving power, the pack is not making proper contact, or either the battery or charger has developed a fault. A blinking light is not automatically an error. On chargers that support hot/cold delay, charging is intentionally suspended until the pack returns to an appropriate temperature, then resumes automatically.

The light legend is specific to the charger model. Older DEWALT chargers and newer fan-cooled models can use different combinations of steady and flashing indicators. Treat the label printed beside your charger’s lights as the authority, rather than assuming a pattern seen on another model applies to yours.

Safety checks before troubleshooting
- Do not open, puncture, modify, or attempt to repair the battery pack. Internal cells and protection circuitry are not user-serviceable.
- If the housing is cracked, broken, swollen, leaking, or otherwise damaged, stop using it and obtain service or recycling guidance.
- Never force a battery into a charger or defeat the charger’s interlock.
- Keep charger ventilation openings clear. A fan-cooled charger must be able to move air; do not operate it if its fan does not work properly or the vents are blocked.
- A charger and battery can feel warm during normal charging. Warmth by itself is not proof of a failure, but excessive heat, smoke, an unusual odor, or visible damage is a reason to disconnect power and seek service.
How DEWALT charging indicators work
Hot/cold delay is a normal charging state
A recently used pack may be hot, while one left in a cold vehicle, shed, or unheated jobsite may be too cold. The charger pauses the charging cycle until the battery reaches a suitable temperature. Let the pack return naturally to a moderate indoor temperature; do not try to heat or chill it rapidly with a heater, freezer, hair dryer, or other improvised method.
In the charger family described in DEWALT’s manual, hot/cold delay is shown by a red light blinking while a yellow indicator remains continuously on. That exact combination is model-dependent, so compare it with the legend on your own charger before deciding that the battery has failed.

Some chargers use a separate problem-pack indication, while others show a different combination when no battery is detected or when input power is absent. A light that stays off can therefore point to an outlet, cord, charger, or pack issue rather than one single cause. Record which lights are on, which are flashing, and whether the pattern changes after the battery reaches room temperature.
Find the correct manual
For the exact legend, identify the model number printed on the charger, then use DEWALT’s manual-locator instructions: find the product page and open its Documents and Manuals section. Do not use a generic internet chart when the model number and the chart do not match.
Step-by-step troubleshooting sequence

1. Bring the battery into the permitted temperature range
DEWALT states that its packs should not be charged below 40 °F (4.5 °C) or above 104 °F (40 °C). The preferred ambient range for longest life and best performance is 65–75 °F (18–24 °C). These are charging-environment limits from the DEWALT manual, not a guarantee that every pack will charge immediately at the edges of the range.

2. Inspect the pack without opening it
Look over the outer case, rails, contacts, and release mechanism. Remove loose sawdust or dirt from the outside with a dry, nonconductive method; do not scrape contacts aggressively or introduce liquid into the pack. Check that the case is not cracked or broken and that no part of the battery is visibly deformed. A damaged pack should not be put back on the charger while you investigate.
If the pack looks intact but was exposed to rain, condensation, or another liquid, allow it to dry completely in a safe location and follow DEWALT service guidance rather than trying repeated charging attempts. The absence of visible damage does not prove that the cells or protection electronics are healthy.

3. Verify the charger’s power source
Plug the charger directly into a receptacle that you know works. DEWALT’s manual recommends testing the receptacle with a lamp or another appliance and checking whether a wall switch controls it. A switched garage or workshop outlet can make a good charger appear dead.
Confirm that the charger’s plug is fully inserted and that any power strip, extension arrangement, or breaker involved is actually supplying power. If the charger has no indicator at all with no battery installed, resolve the power question before interpreting a battery-related pattern. Do not assume the outlet is live simply because another outlet nearby works; test the exact receptacle used by the charger.

4. Remove and reseat the battery correctly
With the charger connected as directed by its manual, remove the pack and reinstall it firmly on the rails until it is fully seated. Some chargers require you to press the battery’s release button to remove it; do not pull at an angle or force the pack. Make sure no debris is preventing the contacts from meeting.
After reseating, watch the indicators for a complete change rather than checking only once. A correctly seated pack should produce the charger model’s normal charging or delay indication. If the lights remain unchanged, continue to the manual and cross-test steps instead of repeatedly jiggling the battery.

5. Match the light pattern to the exact charger legend
Write down the behavior: which color is steady, which color flashes, how quickly it flashes, and whether the pattern changes after several minutes at a safe temperature. Compare those observations with the label on the charger and the manual for that model. A pattern that means hot/cold delay on one unit may mean a problem pack or another condition on a different unit.
Do not diagnose a failed pack solely because one light blinks. First rule out temperature, power, and seating, then use the legend to decide whether the charger is reporting a defined delay, a problem-pack state, or no recognized battery. If the charger gives a pattern not covered by its own documentation, stop relying on online charts and arrange a service inspection.

6. Cross-test the battery and charger with known-good compatible equipment
Cross-testing is the clearest way to separate a battery fault from a charger fault. Use only equipment that is confirmed compatible with the same battery family and charger specifications. Never substitute an unrelated voltage platform or force a pack into a connector that does not belong to it.

If you have only one battery and one charger, you can complete the temperature, outlet, seating, and documentation checks, but you may need an authorized service center for a conclusive test.

7. Check charger cooling and ventilation
Certain fan-cooled chargers, including the DCB118, use an internal fan to help cool the pack and limit hot/cold delays. Listen for the fan when the charger calls for cooling, and inspect the ventilation slots for dust or obstruction. DEWALT says not to operate a charger if its fan does not work properly or its ventilation slots are blocked.
Do not insert tools into the vents or dismantle the charger to reach the fan. Clear only loose external debris using a safe, dry method and keep the charger on a hard, open surface while testing. If the fan never operates when the charger indicates cooling, treat the charger as suspect and stop using it until it has been evaluated.

8. Stop and arrange professional service when the checks do not resolve it
Persistent charging trouble, a damaged housing, an unexplained indicator pattern, or failure in both cross-tests calls for service rather than more repeated charging attempts. DEWALT’s instruction is: “If charging problems persist, take the tool, battery pack and charger to your local service center.” Bring all three items when possible so the center can reproduce the symptom and identify which component is responsible.
Keep the battery closed. A service technician can evaluate the pack and charger with appropriate equipment and provide the correct repair, replacement, or recycling route.
Use the symptom to choose the next check

When a replacement charger makes sense
Replace or source another charger only after the diagnostic evidence points to the charger. Compatibility, charging rate, cooling design, and indicator format all matter; a faster charger cannot repair a battery whose cells or protection electronics have failed.
DEWALT DCB118 as an example
DEWALT’s official DCB118 8 Amp Fast Charger supports 20V MAX and FLEXVOLT 20/60V MAX batteries and uses an internal fan to help limit hot/cold pack delays. Those specifications describe that model; they do not make it a universal replacement for every DEWALT charger. Verify the battery family, connector, and the instructions for your tools before purchasing.

Purchase a battery only after it fails the basic checks and, ideally, a cross-test on a known-good compatible charger. Capacity affects runtime, physical fit, and intended use, so “20V” alone does not identify the best replacement.
DEWALT DCB203 as an example of a compatible family product
The official DCB203 20V MAX 2 Ah battery is described as compatible with 20V MAX tools and chargers. Its 2 Ah capacity is an example of one option in the family, not a universal recommendation. Confirm the tool’s battery platform and choose capacity based on the runtime and weight you actually need.

Common troubleshooting mistakes
Assuming every blink means the same thing
Indicator formats vary by charger. A red blink with a yellow steady light can represent hot/cold delay on one cited charger family, while a different model may use another signal. Always match the model number and legend.
Charging a pack immediately after hard use
Heat from the tool can trigger the normal delay. Give the battery time to return to a suitable temperature instead of repeatedly removing and reinstalling it.

Testing only one component
A suspect battery on a suspect charger gives no useful comparison. A known-good compatible pack or charger turns the diagnosis into a controlled comparison and reduces the chance of replacing the wrong part.
Ignoring a switched workshop outlet
A receptacle controlled by a wall switch can leave the charger completely unpowered. Test the exact outlet with a lamp or another appliance before judging the charger.
Blocking the charger vents
Placing a fan-cooled charger on clothing, sawdust, or another soft surface can restrict airflow. Keep the vents open and stop using the charger if its fan does not work properly.
Opening the pack to “reset” it
There is no safe user reset procedure in the supplied DEWALT instructions. Opening the case creates a safety hazard and removes the option of proper service. Keep the pack intact.

Watch the first successful cycle long enough to confirm that the indicator progresses normally and that the pack does not repeatedly return to an unexplained fault pattern. Keep the charger and pack in the preferred 65–75 °F (18–24 °C) ambient range when practical, and leave cooling vents unobstructed. If the same pack repeatedly enters hot/cold delay under ordinary conditions, charges only intermittently, or fails again on the next use, document the pattern and take the battery, tool, and charger together to service.
Keeping the model numbers, the observed light pattern, the approximate pack temperature, and the cross-test results makes a service diagnosis faster. Those details tell the technician whether the event was a normal temperature pause, a power problem, a contact issue, or a component fault.
When to stop troubleshooting
Stop immediately for visible damage, smoke, leaking, a burning odor, severe heat, a nonworking charger fan, or any need to open the battery. For an intact pack that still will not charge after temperature, outlet, seating, indicator, and cross-test checks, professional diagnosis is the safest next step. A service center can test the complete tool-battery-charger combination and direct damaged equipment to the proper replacement or recycling channel.
