Why a Cordless Drill Won’t Hold a Charge and How to Fix It

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A cordless drill that will not hold a charge may have a hot battery, a poor connection, a failed charger or outlet, an incompatible charging system, or a worn or damaged pack. Do not buy a replacement immediately. Identify the drill and battery model, confirm the charger and outlet, reseat the pack, allow a hot lithium-ion battery to cool, and check the exact indicator pattern in the correct manual. If the pack is cracked, unusually hot, or still fails after those checks, stop using it and use the manufacturer’s authorized service or replacement process.

What “won’t hold a charge” can mean

People use this phrase for several different symptoms. A battery may refuse to charge at all, show a fault light, run for only a few minutes, or lose its charge while stored. Those symptoms do not prove that the battery cells have failed. Charging can be interrupted by temperature protection, an incorrectly seated pack, a dead outlet, the wrong charger, or a problem in the drill, charger, or battery.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Diagnosis is model-specific. Charger LEDs and temperature limits are not standardized across manufacturers, and a battery that fits physically may still be electrically incompatible. Treat the model number, battery series or platform, chemistry, voltage and the manual as the controlling information.

Start with the drill and battery’s identity

Before testing anything, record the information printed on the tool, battery and charger. Look for the drill model, battery part or series number, nominal voltage, chemistry (such as lithium-ion), charger model and any platform name. Photograph the labels if they are hard to read. Download the manual for that exact family rather than relying on a similar-looking drill.

  • Note whether the pack is new, has been stored for a long period, or was just used under heavy load.
  • Check the manual for the normal charging-light sequence and any stated operating or charging temperature limits.

A replacement cannot be selected safely from the words “cordless drill battery” alone. The exact tool model and platform are required.

Most common causes and what they indicate

The pack is still hot

Strenuous drilling can heat a lithium battery enough for its protection system to delay charging. BLACK+DECKER explains that its lithium batteries have hot-pack protection and may not recharge immediately after demanding use; the remedy is to remove the pack and let it cool before trying again (BLACK+DECKER support guidance). The LD12 manual also lists surrounding temperature and a thermal limit among charging troubleshooting considerations (LD12 manual, troubleshooting page).

Those are examples from named products, not a universal temperature number. Do not put a hot pack in a freezer, against a heater, or in any other extreme environment. Let it return to a normal room condition in a dry, ventilated place, then follow the manual’s charging procedure.

The battery is not seated correctly

Rails, latches and electrical contacts must engage fully. Remove the battery, inspect the slot for dust or debris, and reinstall it until the retention mechanism is completely engaged. Do not force a pack or scrape contacts with a metal object. If the charger has a separate cradle, seat the battery in that cradle exactly as illustrated in its manual.

The outlet or charger is not supplying power

Check that the charger’s plug is fully inserted and that the outlet operates with a known working appliance. If the charger uses a detachable power lead, check both connections. A dark indicator can mean no input power, but the meaning varies by model. A charger that remains unresponsive on a confirmed live outlet may require service or replacement; test only with an approved charger for the battery platform.

The indicator pattern is being misread

Flashing, solid, alternating or differently colored LEDs can represent charging, completion, temperature protection, a fault or no battery. There is no cross-brand LED code. Read the charging section of the exact manual before concluding that a light means failure. Write down what the charger does with no battery, with the suspect pack and, if available, with a known-good compatible pack; this information helps an authorized technician.

The pack is worn or damaged

Reduced runtime after correct charging can be consistent with normal battery wear, but the available documents do not establish a universal cycle count or lifespan. A cracked case, swelling, leaking material, burnt odor, corrosion, impact damage or unusual heat is a safety issue rather than a routine runtime complaint. Stop charging a damaged pack and follow the manufacturer’s service instructions.

The components are incompatible

Voltage alone does not establish compatibility. Battery electronics, contacts, firmware or communication requirements can differ between platforms and generations. Bosch’s EasyDrill/EasyImpact instructions say to use only chargers matched to the lithium-ion battery of the power tool (Bosch charging instructions). Apply that statement to the covered Bosch family and use the equivalent requirement in your own manual.

Step-by-step diagnostic procedure

  1. Stop if the pack looks abnormal. Do not connect a cracked, swollen, leaking, burned or otherwise damaged battery. Move it away from combustible materials without handling it unnecessarily and contact the manufacturer or an authorized service provider for instructions.
  2. Let a recently worked battery cool. Remove a hot pack from the drill and allow it to return to normal room conditions. Retry only after the manual’s stated conditions are met.
  3. Verify the model information. Match the drill, battery and charger model numbers and chemistry to the manual. A physically fitting pack is not proof of approval.
  4. Check the power source. Plug the charger into a working outlet and confirm every detachable connection. Avoid extension arrangements or adapters unless the manufacturer’s instructions permit them.
  5. Inspect and reseat the pack. Check for visible debris or damaged plastic around the rails and contacts. Insert the battery in the orientation shown by the manual and engage the latch fully.
  6. Observe the complete indicator sequence. Note the behavior at insertion, during charging and after the stated completion condition. Compare it with the exact manual, not a generic chart from another model.
  7. Retry after an interrupted charge. Some manuals permit normal interruption. Bosch states for its cited EasyDrill/EasyImpact family that interrupting charging does not damage that lithium-ion battery; other products may have different instructions, so follow the applicable manual.
  8. Separate charger and battery clues when possible. If a qualified service center has a known-good, fully compatible charger or battery, it can use that equipment as part of diagnosis. Compatibility and proper operation must be established first; swapping parts by itself does not prove which component is defective.
  9. Test the drill separately. If the battery charges normally but the drill stops under light work, the fault may be in the tool rather than charge retention. Do not bypass protection circuits or continue operating a tool that overheats or behaves abnormally.
  10. Escalate when ordinary checks fail. If the pack will not charge, loses usable runtime immediately, or repeatedly triggers a fault after the preceding checks, record the model numbers and indicator behavior and contact authorized service. Check warranty eligibility before buying parts.

Use the indicator table in the correct manual

Observed behavior Checks to perform What you can conclude
No light or no response Working outlet, plug connections, charger model and battery seating Power delivery or a component fault is possible; the light alone is not a diagnosis.
Charging indication appears after insertion, then stops Pack temperature, full-charge indication and the manual’s fault sequence Protection, completion or a fault may be involved; use the model-specific explanation.
Fault or alternating light Exact LED code in the manual; inspect for damage and incompatible parts Do not keep retrying a damaged or unapproved pack.
Charge completes but runtime is very short Recent workload, storage history, pack age and tool behavior Wear or damage is plausible, but an authorized test is needed for a definitive decision.
Battery works in one approved tool but not another Platform, firmware or contact compatibility and the second tool’s condition Do not assume the battery is bad until both products are verified as compatible.

How to tell whether the battery, charger or drill needs attention

No home procedure can reliably identify a failed lithium cell without the appropriate equipment. You can, however, organize the evidence for service.

  • Suspect the outlet or charger first when the charger shows no normal response on a confirmed live outlet, provided the battery is correctly seated and approved.
  • Suspect temperature protection when the problem starts immediately after heavy work and clears after the pack cools.
  • Suspect the battery when the same approved charger and outlet behave normally with other compatible equipment, yet the pack repeatedly refuses charging or has severely reduced runtime.
  • Suspect the drill when the pack charges normally but the tool cuts out, stalls or drains it unusually quickly under otherwise ordinary work.
  • Suspect compatibility whenever a pack, charger or tool comes from a different platform, generation or chemistry, even if the terminals appear to fit.

These are prioritization clues, not a substitute for a manufacturer’s diagnostic test. Makita Canada directs customers with battery-performance concerns to take the battery and charger to a Factory Service Center or Authorized Service Center so a technician can test them and advise whether replacement is needed (Makita Canada battery and service FAQ).

When repair or replacement is appropriate

Use authorized service for a suspect pack

Service is the safest route for repeated charging failure, severe runtime loss, physical damage or an unexplained fault code. Provide the battery, charger and drill when the service provider requests them, along with the model numbers and your observations. Ask whether the problem is covered by the applicable warranty; coverage, service locations and terms differ by region and product.

Do not compare capacity claims without a verified model and source. A higher number printed on an unapproved pack does not make it suitable. The total cost should be considered against repairing or replacing the drill, but no universal price can be stated without the model and market.

Replace a charger only when the diagnosis supports it

A charger is a separate component. If the outlet is good, the battery is correctly seated and compatible, and the charger does not show the expected behavior, obtain the manufacturer-specified charger for that exact platform. Do not substitute a charger because its plug or voltage marking looks similar.

Safety boundaries for lithium-ion drill batteries

  • Never charge a cracked, swollen, leaking, burned or impact-damaged pack.
  • Never open a pack, replace individual cells, convert its chemistry, bypass protection electronics or alter communication components unless you are qualified and following a manufacturer-approved procedure.
  • Never use an unapproved charger or an improvised adapter.
  • Keep charging and storage conditions within the manual’s instructions; avoid extreme heat, cold, moisture and combustible surroundings.
  • If a pack becomes unusually hot, emits an odor, smokes or changes shape, stop using it and follow the maker’s emergency and disposal guidance.

Makita Canada warns that non-genuine or altered lithium-ion batteries can interfere with communication among the pack, charger and tool and may create fire or injury risks (Makita Canada Battery Care Guide). That warning should not be expanded into a universal claim about every brand’s warranty, but it is a clear reason to avoid modified packs.

Manufacturer-specific information you can rely on

BLACK+DECKER

BLACK+DECKER’s support article specifically addresses a lithium battery that will not charge immediately after strenuous use and attributes the delay to hot-pack protection. Its LD12 troubleshooting page lists installation, charger connection, surrounding temperature, thermal limit and depleted charge as checks. Use those documents only for the applicable products and use your own model’s manual for LED meanings and temperature requirements.

Bosch DIY

The cited EasyDrill/EasyImpact manual requires a charger matched to the tool’s lithium-ion battery and states that interrupting charging does not damage that battery. This is product-family guidance, not permission to interrupt or substitute chargers on unrelated systems.

Makita

Makita Canada’s FAQ recommends professional diagnostic testing of the battery and charger when performance is abnormal. Its battery-care material explains the risks associated with non-genuine or altered lithium-ion packs. Warranty and service arrangements still depend on the exact product and region.

DEWALT

DEWALT provides manuals, warranty information, repairs, spare-parts service and safety notices through its support portal (DEWALT Product & Tool Support). Use the portal to locate the documentation and service route for the specific model rather than assuming that another platform’s procedure applies.

Preventing a repeat charging problem

  • Use the specified charger and keep it with the correct battery platform.
  • Allow a hot pack to cool before charging instead of repeatedly inserting it while protection is active.
  • Keep the battery, charger contacts and storage area clean and dry without using metal tools to scrape contacts.
  • Store and operate the pack according to its manual, away from extreme temperatures and physical damage.
  • Label batteries and chargers by platform if several systems are present on a job site.
  • Record unusual LED patterns, dates and work conditions; this makes an authorized service diagnosis faster.

A practical decision path

If the battery was just used hard, cool it and retry with the specified charger. If it remains cool but the charger has no normal response, verify the outlet, connections, model match and seating. If the indicator still signals a fault, stop experimenting and consult the manual or authorized service. If charging completes but runtime is persistently poor, have the battery and charger tested before buying a replacement. A replacement is justified only when its exact compatibility, safety approval and service support are established.
