ALEC described the project value as approximately USD 1.7 billion and set an expected completion target of Q3 of FY2029. AtkinsRéalis has announced that it will act as lead multidisciplinary design and supervision consultant. In practical terms, that places it on the design and construction-supervision side of the announced arrangement, while ALEC is responsible for procurement and construction delivery as described in ALEC’s partnership announcement. DCT Abu Dhabi is the awarding authority and project partner, rather than the design consultant or construction contractor.

AtkinsRéalis has described 16K visuals, a programmable LED exosphere and advanced audio technology as planned features. These are announced specifications, not independently verified final performance claims or confirmed as-built details.
How do DCT Abu Dhabi and Sphere Entertainment fit into the project?
DCT Abu Dhabi and Sphere Entertainment announced their partnership in 2024. DCT said it would fund construction and pay a franchise initiation fee for the rights to build a venue using Sphere Entertainment’s proprietary designs, technology and intellectual property. Sphere Entertainment said its experts would support development, construction and pre-opening.

The 2024 announcement also described anticipated arrangements after opening, including licensed content, use of Sphere branding and intellectual property and technology, operations, and commercial and strategic advisory support. These were announced plans and terms; the public announcement does not establish that every definitive agreement or future operating arrangement has since been completed.
The parties’ roles span different parts of the project lifecycle: DCT is the Abu Dhabi project partner and announced funder; Sphere Entertainment is the intellectual-property and technology partner with a development and pre-opening support role; AtkinsRéalis is the design and supervision consultant; and ALEC’s subsidiary is the construction contractor.

The announced site is Yas Island in Abu Dhabi. Sphere Entertainment and the Abu Dhabi Media Office announced the location in 2026. The Media Office described the venue as the first Sphere outside the United States. Sphere Entertainment and DCT Abu Dhabi stated a construction-phase cost of USD 1.7 billion in their 2026 announcement; ALEC Holdings separately reported an approximate project value of USD 1.7 billion in its award disclosure.
When is Sphere Abu Dhabi expected to open?
AtkinsRéalis has said the venue is planned to open in 2029. ALEC Holdings’ award disclosure gives an expected completion target of Q3 of FY2029. These statements use different milestone wording: a planned opening year and a contractor-reported completion target. They do not establish an exact opening day, and the available announcements do not confirm that either milestone has been achieved.

The 2024 partnership announcement referred to the 20,000-capacity Las Vegas Sphere as a comparison point for scale. It did not establish that Sphere Abu Dhabi will have the same capacity, so that figure should not be treated as the Abu Dhabi venue’s confirmed capacity.
