These are safe first steps, not a universal repair sequence: controls and procedures vary by model, so find the model number and use its owner’s manual before opening a filter or changing installation settings. Whirlpool notes that its general code list may not include every code for every washer.
Start with the model and the symptom
Record the exact code, if one appears, and note what the washer was doing when the problem began. Whirlpool’s front-load washer help hub organizes support by error codes, starting and operation, cycle concerns, noise and vibration, leaks, and manuals. Use the manual for your exact model to confirm whether a control or procedure applies; the general front-load error-code list is not necessarily exhaustive.
- Try the symptom-specific external checks below before concluding that a component has failed.
- Do not buy a pump filter, inlet hose, or other part based only on a symptom or code; compatibility and the actual fault depend on the model.
- If a supported check does not resolve the problem, use the model manual or contact Whirlpool service.
If the washer will not start
Check the simple interlocks and supply first. Whirlpool’s no-start guidance recommends these checks:
- Look for Control Lock. Depending on the model, the display may show “LoC” or “LC.” Use the manual’s instructions to turn the lock off.
- Close the door firmly and check that no item is preventing it from latching.
- Confirm the water supply is connected and the valves are open.
- On models that require it, press and hold Start for up to about three seconds.
- If it remains unresponsive, disconnect power for five minutes, then reconnect it and try again.
These checks do not establish that a control board, door lock, or other part has failed. If the washer still does not start, consult the model manual or arrange service.

If the washer will not drain or displays F9 E1
Whirlpool identifies F9 E1 with a drain problem or a drain time that is too long. Start with the drain path and installation rather than assuming the pump needs replacement. Follow Whirlpool’s F9 E1 guidance and check the exact washer’s installation instructions.
- Inspect the drain hose for kinks or blockage.
- If your model has a cleanable drain-pump filter, clean it only by the manual’s procedure. Filter location and access are model-dependent.
- Where applicable, check the door seal or bellow for an obstruction.
- Check drain-hose setup. Whirlpool says the hose should not extend more than 4.5 inches (113 mm) into the drainpipe or laundry tub and should not be sealed with tape. Standpipe specifications can differ by model; confirm the installation dimensions in that washer’s instructions rather than treating a general dimension as universal.
An incorrectly installed hose can contribute to siphoning, while excess suds can also delay draining. For suds-related issues, use HE detergent and follow the package directions; adding more detergent will not solve excess suds. If the washer displays F20 or will not fill
Whirlpool says F20 indicates no water or insufficient water entering the washer. Check the supply before suspecting an inlet valve:
- Make sure both the hot- and cold-water faucets are fully open.
- Check that the inlet screens are not clogged, using the model manual for the correct procedure.
- Inspect the hoses for kinks.

If water leaks from the front
Check the door area and dispenser before treating a front leak as a failed seal. Whirlpool’s front-leak guidance recommends:
- Wipe dirt or residue from the glass and rubber door seal.
- Remove clothing or other items caught in or under the seal.
- Check whether the dispenser drawer is clogged and clean it as directed for your model.
- Use HE detergent and follow its package directions. Non-HE detergent or too much detergent can create excess suds associated with leaking, drainage concerns, and poor rinsing.
Whirlpool names Swash as its recommendation, but its stated troubleshooting rationale supports using HE detergent generally; it does not establish that Swash is required.

If Clean Washer shows F0 E1 or rL
These codes mean the Clean Washer cycle detected a load in the drum. Remove the items and restart the cycle, following Whirlpool’s F0 E1 or rL instructions.

External checks such as confirming that a valve is open or looking for a kinked hose are different from internal electrical diagnosis or disassembly. Whirlpool’s 2019 service manual for 27-inch front-load washers warns: “Electrical Shock Hazard. Disconnect power before servicing. Replace all parts and panels before operating. Failure to do so can result in death or electrical shock.” That warning is directed at servicing; do not treat internal repair as a casual troubleshooting step. If the manual’s consumer checks do not fix the issue, contact Whirlpool service through its support hub.
