For most renters, the best first Ryobi tool is the 18V ONE+ HP Compact Brushless 1/2 in. Drill/Driver Kit (PSBDD02K). RYOBI’s official listing specifies a 6.1-inch-long tool, up to 450 in-lbs. of torque, speeds of 0–450 and 0–1,700 RPM, and a 24-position clutch. The listed kit includes a 2.0 Ah battery and charger, although a tool-only option is also shown. That combination suits furniture assembly, controlled screwdriving, and many small drilling jobs without requiring a large tool. It does not, however, prove that every wall, anchor, or repair is suitable. Check your lease and ask the landlord before drilling into a rental.
Why the PSBDD02K is the strongest first choice
Small rental repairs usually involve driving screws, assembling furniture, installing brackets, making pilot holes, or removing fasteners. A compact drill/driver can perform those jobs with one tool and a removable battery, while its clutch helps limit how aggressively it drives a screw.

RYOBI’s official product listing identifies the 18V ONE+ HP Compact Brushless 1/2 in. Drill/Driver Kit as model PSBDD02K. The listing describes it as only 6.1 inches in length. It also specifies up to 450 in-lbs. of torque, two speed ranges, 0–450 RPM and 0–1,700 RPM, and a 24-position clutch. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent performance tests, so treat them as controls and capacity figures rather than a promise that every material will drill easily.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe listed kit contains the drill/driver, one 2.0 Ah battery, and a charger. The same product page shows a tool-only purchase option. Retail packages can change, so confirm the exact contents before paying. A kit is generally the simpler starting point for a renter who does not already own a compatible battery and charger; tool-only makes more sense only when you already have the required battery system.
#1 Best Overall
- Valued Carpenter Pencil Set: You will get 2 pcs solid carpenter pencils with 26 piece 2.8 mm refills, 1 replaceable sharpener, 1 plastic storage box.The complete carpenter pencils combination allows you to finish your work faster and more easily
- Deep Hole Marker Pencil: The deep-hole construction pencils adopts 45mm elongated tip design, which is more convenient to mark in the small hole or in other tight areas that other carpenter markers cannot reach
- Carpenter Pencils with Sharpener: The sharpener is screwed into the top of the work pencil, which won't get lost either. Built-in pencil sharpener that keep the lead with pointed and smooth to Improves line of sight in fine work
- Stronger Solid Lead: This work pencil is matched with a 2.8 mm thick lead , which is much thicker and stronger during the drawing process of construction work, it will not break or damage easily
- Marks on Various Surfaces: 3 colors solid construction pencil can marks on various surfaces, such as metal, plastic, wood, paper etc. Ideals for woodworkers, contractors, craftsmen, builders, merchants and masons
What those specifications mean in a rental
- 6.1-inch length: A short body can be easier to position inside cabinets, closets, and narrow furniture frames.
- Two speed ranges: The lower range gives you more control for starting screws and working with delicate hardware; the higher range is intended for faster drilling or driving when the material and bit allow it.
- 24-position clutch: The numbered settings let you reduce driving force before a screw head strips or a fastener sinks too deeply. The correct setting depends on the screw, material, and bit.
- Up to 450 in-lbs. of torque: This is the listed maximum specification, not a measurement of the force you will receive in every situation. Battery condition, bit choice, speed, and resistance all affect actual work.
- 2.0 Ah battery in the listed kit: It supplies a ready-to-use setup, but runtime varies with the task, bit size, material, and battery condition.
The compact size is a convenience, not permission to drill wherever you want. A landlord may restrict holes, anchors, shelves, television mounts, or changes to tile, masonry, cabinets, and doors. Tool selection comes after permission and surface identification.
What counts as a “small repair” for a renter?
The PSBDD02K is a practical fit for jobs that need controlled rotation rather than specialized impact or cutting action.
Good matches
- Assembling flat-pack furniture and tightening loose furniture hardware.
- Driving screws into predrilled holes in wood or manufactured panels.
- Making pilot holes for approved hooks, brackets, or other hardware.
- Installing or removing cabinet pulls, hinges, handles, and similar fasteners.
- Drilling small holes in wood, plastic, or other materials when the bit manufacturer permits it.
Jobs that need a different plan
- Drilling concrete, brick, or stone: the available product evidence does not establish that this model has a hammer-drill mode, so do not assume it is suitable for masonry.
- Cutting drywall, trim, or pipe: a drill/driver is not a substitute for a dedicated cutting tool, and cutting rental surfaces may violate the lease.
- Removing seized or rusted fasteners: excessive force can damage the screw, surface, or tool. Penetrating lubricant, a hand tool, or professional help may be safer.
- Electrical, plumbing, gas, structural, or fire-safety work: stop and use a qualified professional or follow the landlord’s maintenance process.
Those limits are practical risk controls, not claims that the drill cannot perform a particular task. The supplied product information supports the drill/driver’s specifications, but it does not establish a ranked list of other Ryobi tools or prove performance on every substrate.
Check rental permission before making a hole
Before drilling, read the lease section covering alterations, fixtures, wall damage, painting, and move-out repairs. Rules vary by property and jurisdiction. If the lease is unclear, send the landlord or property manager a written question describing the location, hole size, fastener, and intended load.

- Ergonomically Designed: Work in tight areas with a compact design that gets into tough spots
- Both tools are designed to fit into difficult to reach spaces
- Complete a wide range of applications with a high-performance motor that delivers up to 300 UWO, and an impact driver delivering up to 1,400 in-lbs of torque
- Both the DEWALT impact driver and drill driver feature integrated LED work lights with a convenient 20-second delay, ensuring enhanced visibility in dimly lit or challenging work areas
- One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips
Ask these questions
- Are small screw holes or picture hooks allowed?
- Are anchors, shelves, curtain hardware, or wall-mounted televisions prohibited?
- Must the landlord approve holes in tile, masonry, doors, cabinets, or exterior walls?
- Who is responsible for patching and repainting at move-out?
- Are there building-specific restrictions, such as no drilling near fire equipment or utility chases?
Keep written approval and photograph the area before installation. If drilling is not allowed, use a landlord-approved non-permanent hanging method or ask maintenance to install the item. Do not treat a compact tool as a workaround for a lease restriction.
Choose the right package
| Purchase format | What the listed evidence says | Best fit | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| PSBDD02K kit | Drill/driver, 2.0 Ah battery, and charger are listed. | A first-time buyer who needs a complete setup. | Retailer’s current contents, warranty terms, price, and availability. |
| Tool-only option | The official page displays a tool-only purchase option. | Someone who already owns a compatible battery and charger. | Battery compatibility, included accessories, and whether a charger is excluded. |
No durable price can be stated from the available listing. Prices and stock change, and a displayed result should not be treated as a standing offer. Compare the complete cost of the tool, battery, charger, bits, and any approved anchors rather than comparing tool bodies alone.
Set up the drill/driver without damaging the rental
- Inspect the work area. Confirm the approved location and look for visible outlets, switches, plumbing fixtures, radiators, and other signs of utilities. Do not drill where you cannot reasonably assess the risk; ask maintenance instead.
- Select the bit. Match the bit to the screw head and material. A worn or incorrect bit slips, rounds the screw, and can scar a wall or cabinet.
- Install the bit securely. Open the chuck, seat the bit straight, and tighten it firmly. Remove the battery while changing bits if that is the safest way to prevent an accidental start.
- Set the speed. Start in the 0–450 RPM range for controlled screwdriving and initial contact. Use the 0–1,700 RPM range only when the material and bit call for faster rotation.
- Set the clutch low. Begin with a low numbered clutch position and increase gradually until the screw seats. This reduces the chance of stripping the head or burying the screw.
- Secure the work. Hold a loose board or furniture panel with clamps or have it supported; never hold material against your body while drilling.
- Run the tool straight. Apply steady, moderate pressure and release the trigger as soon as the screw reaches the intended depth or the hole is complete.
- Inspect the result. Check that the fastener is flush where intended, the material is not cracked, and the fixture is stable before loading it.
Practical procedures for common renter tasks
Furniture assembly
Lay out the hardware and identify the manufacturer’s specified screw lengths. Start each screw by hand for several turns so the threads are aligned. Use the low speed range and a low clutch setting, then increase only if the screw stops short. Stop when the joint is snug; continuing after the panels meet can crush particleboard or strip the insert.

Replacing a cabinet handle
Remove the old fasteners with the clutch set low. Keep the hardware in a cup so it is not lost. If the new handle uses a different hole spacing, measure and mark both holes before drilling. Place painter’s tape over the mark to reduce surface chipping, use a sharp bit appropriate for the cabinet material, and drill slowly from the finished side when practical. Obtain permission if the change creates new holes.

Making a pilot hole in wood
Mark the center with a pencil or awl. Choose a bit slightly smaller than the screw’s solid core, not its full thread diameter, unless the hardware instructions specify otherwise. Drill at low speed while keeping the tool square to the surface. Clear dust, then drive the screw with the clutch low enough to stop before the head damages the finish.
Installing an approved wall fastener
Use only the anchor type and load rating approved for the wall and by the landlord. Confirm that the item’s weight, including anything placed on it, stays below the hardware rating. Drill the specified diameter and depth, insert the anchor, and drive the screw without overtightening. If the wall crumbles, the bit suddenly encounters unexpected resistance, or the location is uncertain, stop and contact maintenance.
Speed and clutch decisions
| Situation | Starting choice | Reason | Adjustment |
|---|---|---|---|
| Starting a screw in a pilot hole | 0–450 RPM; low clutch number | Maximum control near the surface. | Increase clutch only if the screw will not seat. |
| Driving a long screw into approved wood | 0–450 RPM | Helps maintain alignment and limit stripping. | Use steady pressure; do not force a stalled bit. |
| Fast drilling with a suitable bit | Up to 1,700 RPM range | Faster rotation can suit some drilling operations. | Follow the bit maker’s speed guidance and reduce speed if heat or wandering develops. |
| Delicate cabinet or furniture hardware | Low speed and low clutch | Reduces the chance of crushing or stripping material. | Finish the last turns by hand if needed. |
The numbers above are operating starting points, not universal settings. Material density, screw size, bit type, and finish determine the final adjustment.
Battery, charging, and storage
Charge the listed 2.0 Ah battery with the supplied charger before the first job and follow the battery and charger instructions. Keep contacts dry and clean, store the battery away from extreme heat and moisture, and remove it from the tool during storage or transport. If the tool slows markedly, the battery becomes unusually hot, or the charger indicates a fault, stop using the setup until the manufacturer’s instructions resolve the condition.

Renters often have limited storage. Keep the drill, charger, battery, and bits together in a small case so the tool is available for occasional repairs without being left connected or exposed. Do not leave a charged battery in direct sun, near a heater, or in a damp utility area.

A powered screwdriver could be more convenient for very light fastening, while an oscillating multi-tool could address certain cutting or scraping jobs. However, the available official evidence does not establish which of those categories is the best alternative, nor does it verify current specifications, kit contents, or renter suitability for a particular model. Treat those as possible second purchases only after identifying a recurring task and checking the exact product page.
Use this decision test:
- If most jobs involve screws, pilot holes, furniture, or hardware, start with the PSBDD02K drill/driver kit.
- If you already own a compatible battery and charger, compare the tool-only price with the cost of a complete kit.
- If the job requires masonry drilling, cutting, sanding, or plumbing work, identify the required capability first and ask the landlord or a professional whether the work is permitted.
- If you expect only one tiny repair, borrowing a suitable tool or requesting maintenance may cost less and create less risk than buying equipment.
Common mistakes and recovery steps
The screw head is stripping
Stop immediately, switch to the correct bit, lower the speed, and reduce trigger pressure. If the head is already damaged, stop before enlarging the damage; a hand tool or maintenance technician may be needed.

The bit wanders on the surface
Make a small starter mark, use a sharp bit, and begin slowly with the tool square to the work. On finished surfaces, confirm that tape or another landlord-approved protection will not leave residue.
The wall feels unexpectedly hard
Do not increase force blindly. The material may be masonry, a stud, metal, tile, or a utility barrier. Stop, reassess the location and permission, and obtain the correct tool or professional help.
The battery or tool becomes hot
Release the trigger and let the equipment cool in a safe, dry place. Check the bit for binding and the work for excessive resistance. Continued overheating is a reason to stop and consult the manufacturer’s instructions or service support.
