To check the Golden Gate Bridge before you travel, use four official sources together: start with the Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District’s Service Alerts for bridge-specific roadway, sidewalk, construction and event notices; open the 511.org real-time map for speeds, incidents, closures, cameras and message signs; use Caltrans QuickMap for state-highway conditions; and check the California Highway Patrol (CHP) Golden Gate Communications Center incident list when a crash or other incident may explain a slowdown. Recheck shortly before departure because every source is time-sensitive.
What each source can—and cannot—tell you
“Is the Golden Gate Bridge open?” and “Is there traffic on the bridge?” are different questions. A bridge can remain open to vehicles while one or more lanes are closed for construction. Traffic may be moving normally on the span while an approach highway is stopped by a collision. A pedestrian or bicycle sidewalk can also be restricted even when the vehicle roadway is operating.

Check the District’s Service Alerts first
The Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District’s Service Alerts page is the authoritative starting point for conditions on the bridge itself. Its Bridge Alerts area separates roadway notices from sidewalk and trail closures, parking information and visitor events. The District home page can also carry current notices.
Match the alert to your travel mode
- Vehicle driver: open the roadway construction and closure notices. Read whether the notice concerns one lane, several lanes, a direction of travel or the entire roadway.
- Pedestrian or cyclist: read the sidewalk and trail section rather than assuming a roadway notice applies to you. A vehicle lane restriction and a sidewalk closure are separate operating conditions.
- Visitor using facilities: check parking and event notices. A special event can change access or parking without closing the roadway.
- Transit user: review ferry and bus notices when those services are part of your trip.
Read the validity window, not just the headline
Every alert should be read for its effective date, start and end times, affected direction, lanes or facilities, and any stated exceptions. A headline that says “lane closures” does not by itself mean the bridge is fully closed. If the notice describes overnight work, the daytime condition may be different; if it lists a future date, it is not proof of today’s status.
Example of a partial closure
The District home page accessed on October 13, 2026, displayed an October 12 notice titled “GGB Seismic Retrofit Construction: Weeknight Lane Closures.” The notice said overnight lane closures would occur each weeknight for seismic retrofit work while the bridge roadway would remain open to all vehicle traffic at all times. Treat that wording as a dated example of how to interpret an alert, not as a standing promise: schedules and lane arrangements can change. The Service Alerts page also listed an October 15 roadway-repair notice, illustrating why a future- or period-limited notice must be checked again on the day you travel.

Use the 511.org real-time map for traffic on the bridge and approaches
The 511.org map is the most useful second check because it combines live traffic conditions with incidents and transportation-system information beyond the bridge operator’s notices. It is designed to show what traffic is doing now, not to provide a permanent record of what happened earlier.
Turn on the layers that answer your question
- Open the real-time map and center it on the Golden Gate Bridge and the route you will use to reach it.
- Enable the speed categories. The map distinguishes moving, slow, stop-and-go and closed conditions, helping you separate congestion from an actual closure.
- Enable incidents to see reported crashes, disabled vehicles or other events that may explain a slowdown.
- Enable construction alerts, road closures and events. Planned work and a special event can affect traffic even when no crash is reported.
- Enable Caltrans message signs to read warnings shown on roadside changeable-message signs.
- Open available traffic cameras to compare the map status with a current visual view of the roadway.
Check both the span and the approaches. A closed or slow segment several miles away can determine your arrival time even when the bridge itself is moving normally. Conversely, a red or closed segment on a map should be interpreted with its incident or closure details rather than assumed to mean the whole bridge is shut.

Use timestamps and refresh
Live layers update independently. Refresh the map after reading an incident and again just before departure. If a camera, incident marker and speed color disagree, look for each item’s timestamp and description; they may represent different update cycles or different points on the route.
Check Caltrans QuickMap for state-highway context
Caltrans directs travelers to QuickMap for real-time information and to 511.org for 24/7 traffic updates. QuickMap is especially useful when your route includes a state highway leading to or from the bridge.
Use it to look for highway incidents, construction, closures, traffic speeds and changeable-message signs. Those signs can communicate a closure or an expected delay before you reach the affected segment. A Caltrans notice about a particular 2026 event may explain how the system works, but it is not a current bridge-status report; rely on the live map and current signs for today’s conditions.
How to reconcile QuickMap with a District alert
Give the District notice priority for the bridge roadway or sidewalks, and QuickMap priority for state-highway segments outside the District’s facilities. If both show a problem in the same location, use the more specific notice’s date, hours and affected lanes to determine whether it is active. If one page has no matching item, do not infer that the other page is wrong: the systems cover different assets and can refresh at different times.
Use CHP’s Golden Gate incident list for incident details
The CHP Golden Gate Communications Center page lists an incident’s time, type and location, along with a page-update time. It can explain why traffic has suddenly slowed when the District has no planned construction notice.

- Open the incident list and note the page-update time first.
- Find the incident location and compare it with your direction of travel and the 511 map.
- Read the incident time and type. A recent collision near an approach is more likely to explain a current slowdown than an old entry.
- Refresh the page before relying on the listing. Do not assume an incident remains active simply because it appeared on an earlier visit.
CHP information is a live snapshot, not an evergreen closure statement. For example, a result viewed on October 7, 2026, showed an update time of 5:19 a.m.; that timestamp was already stale for someone planning a later trip. Link readers to the live page or open it directly rather than copying incident entries into a standing travel guide.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHow to tell a full closure from reduced lanes
Read the body of the notice for five details:
- Roadway or facility: vehicle roadway, sidewalk, trail, parking area, ferry or bus service.
- Direction: northbound, southbound or both directions, if stated.
- Lanes affected: one lane, multiple lanes, reversible lanes or all lanes.
- Schedule: exact dates, days of week, start and end times, and whether work repeats.
- Remaining access: whether any lanes or facilities stay open and whether escorted, alternating or restricted movement is described.
“Lane closure” usually describes reduced capacity, not an automatic full closure. “Roadway closure” may still be limited to a direction or a stated time period. Only the specific notice can establish the scope. If the notice does not state a comparable value—such as the number of lanes remaining—do not guess it; use the District’s wording or contact information.
Compare the sources when their statuses appear to conflict
| Situation | Likely explanation | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| District says roadway open; 511 shows slow traffic | The bridge is operating, but demand, construction or an approach incident is reducing speed. | Open 511 incidents, speed categories, cameras and message signs. |
| District lists lane work; map shows traffic moving | Some lanes remain open, or the work is outside its active hours. | Read the notice’s hours, direction and lanes affected. |
| 511 shows a closure marker; District has no roadway alert | The closure may be on an approach highway or another agency’s facility. | Check the marker location and Caltrans QuickMap. |
| CHP lists an incident; 511 has no obvious slowdown | The incident may be cleared, minor, outside the main traffic path or not yet reflected in the speed layer. | Compare timestamps and refresh both pages. |
| Vehicle route is open; sidewalk is marked closed | Roadway and pedestrian/bicycle facilities are being managed separately. | Follow the District’s sidewalk/trail notice and use its stated alternative or restriction. |
Set alerts if you make the trip regularly
The District advertises text and email alert sign-up. Its categories include roadway, sidewalk/trail, parking, event, ferry and bus notices. Subscribe to the category that matches your trip so a visitor does not receive only roadway information when the real issue is a sidewalk closure, and a daily driver does not overlook a construction notice.
Subscriptions supplement, rather than replace, a same-day check. An alert can describe a planned window, while an incident or weather-related condition can change the live situation after the message was sent.
Call for trip-planning assistance
For phone assistance, use the District’s current contact page to verify numbers before calling. The District lists 511 toll-free and 415-455-2000 for callers outside the Bay Area for trip-planning assistance. Phone staff can help with the information the District controls, but live approach traffic and CHP incidents still require the relevant map or incident page.

A five-minute departure check
- Start with the District: read active Bridge Alerts and the home-page notices; confirm roadway, sidewalk or visitor information matches your mode.
- Check 511: turn on speed, incident, construction, closure, event, message-sign and camera layers for the entire approach route.
- Check QuickMap: review state-highway conditions and message signs outside the bridge operator’s facilities.
- Check CHP: look for a recent incident at the bridge or on your approach, and note the update time.
- Record the timing: save the notice’s dates and hours, then refresh immediately before leaving if your trip is later in the day.
For a pedestrian or cyclist, replace the vehicle-lane check with the District’s sidewalk and trail notices, then use 511 to inspect the approach streets. For a visitor attending an event, add parking and event alerts to the same sequence.
Common situations and the right response
“Is the Golden Gate Bridge open right now?”
Read the latest District roadway alert first, then confirm the 511 map does not show a current closure at the bridge. If the District notice says lanes are closed but the roadway remains open, plan for reduced capacity rather than treating the bridge as inaccessible.
“Is there traffic on the Golden Gate Bridge?”
Use 511’s speed categories and cameras on the span, then inspect incidents and construction on both approaches. Do not use a bridge-only notice to estimate congestion; an approach incident can be the controlling delay.
“Are there lane closures today?”
Look for the District notice’s date and hours. A recurring weeknight project may not apply during the day, while a future-dated repair notice may not yet be active. Confirm the direction and lanes affected before changing your route.
“The map says closed, but I see no District alert.”
Identify the exact map segment. It may be an approach highway, ramp or another facility covered by Caltrans or a local agency. Check QuickMap and the incident details rather than assuming the bridge roadway is fully closed.

“An incident is listed, but traffic looks normal.”
Compare the incident time and CHP page-update time with the current clock, then refresh. The incident may have cleared or be located away from your lane. Use the newest information from all applicable pages.
Why you should not rely on a copied status
Bridge notices, interactive maps and incident lists are volatile. A page can show a planned closure that has ended, a future repair that has not started, or an incident that was cleared after the last refresh. Even an official statement that the roadway will remain open is tied to the notice date and project conditions. Always open the current District, 511, QuickMap and CHP pages when making a same-day decision.
Official sources also publish different kinds of information. The District describes its facilities and operating plans; 511 aggregates network conditions; Caltrans reports state-highway context; CHP records incidents. Their timestamps, coverage areas and update processes are not identical, so apparent discrepancies are often differences in scope rather than errors.
Bottom line
For a reliable answer, combine the District’s bridge-specific alert with 511’s live map, Caltrans QuickMap and the CHP incident list. Interpret every closure by its date, hours, direction, lanes and facility, and refresh shortly before departure. That workflow tells you whether the span is open, how traffic is moving on the approaches, and whether a restriction affects vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists or visitors.
