Match the battery to the system marked on the tool: Ryobi 18V ONE+ tools use Ryobi 18V ONE+ batteries, while 40V tools belong to Ryobi’s separate 40V family. A charger that accepts both systems does not make their batteries interchangeable in tools. If you have an older tool, check its model number and manual before buying a pack.
Start with the tool’s voltage and system marking
Look for the voltage and battery-system name printed on the tool, its label, or its manual. Ryobi states that its 18V ONE+ batteries are compatible with Ryobi 18V ONE+ products. Its product lineup lists 40V, USB Lithium, and 80V as separate battery categories, so do not assume packs from those families fit an 18V ONE+ tool.

Why a charger that accepts two systems does not make the batteries interchangeable
Ryobi lists the PCG007 as an 18V/40V Dual Platform Charger and says it accepts Ryobi 18V ONE+ or 40V batteries. That is a charger specification: it means the charger can charge packs from both families. It does not mean either pack can power a tool made for the other system. Charging times shown for particular batteries on a charger page apply to those named models; they should not be treated as a general charging-time promise for every pack.

Choosing a battery after confirming the platform
Once you have confirmed that the tool is 18V ONE+, compare compatible packs by capacity, size and weight, the work you expect to do, and your available charger. Ryobi’s product listings include 4Ah PBP004 and PBP005 packs and a 2Ah PBP006 pack. A larger Ah rating generally means more stored capacity, but actual runtime varies with the tool and task; there is no universal runtime ranking across all tools in the available product information.
Ryobi describes features such as fuel gauges, heat management, and cell electronics on its battery materials. These are manufacturer descriptions, not independent comparative test results. Check the specific battery and tool manual for any model-level requirements or limitations.

Ryobi’s PBP004/PBP005 product page states: “With 30 years of battery compatibility, RYOBI™ 18V ONE+™ batteries are compatible with any RYOBI™ 18V ONE+™ product.” Treat this as Ryobi’s stated compatibility rule; for an older tool whose fit is uncertain, identify the exact model before ordering.

- Find the tool’s model number on its label or in the paperwork that came with it.
- Read the tool manual and note the named battery system and any listed compatible pack models.
- Compare that information with the label and model number on the battery you plan to buy.
- If the manual is unavailable or the labels do not clearly match, contact Ryobi support with the tool model number before purchasing.
The general 18V ONE+ compatibility statement does not identify every older battery generation or regional tool model individually. A model-specific check is the safer way to resolve uncertainty.
