The earlier Jill Taylor casting with Frances Fisher is a separate production-history question: D23 reports that Fisher was replaced by Patricia Richardson only days before the pilot was taped, but the sources checked do not confirm that a complete Fisher version is publicly available or included on the DVD.
Where you can watch the regular Home Improvement series
Disney+
Disney+’s official listing identifies Home Improvement as the 1991–1998 series and displays eight seasons. Season 1, episode 1 is titled “Pilot.” The episode description says Tim disobeys Jill and rewires the dishwasher, which identifies the standard series opener rather than a separately labeled early production cut. The listing also names Patricia Richardson among the stars.

Hulu’s official listing reports eight seasons and 203 episodes and describes the Taylor family: Tim, Jill and their three boys. This confirms that the regular series was available in the Hulu catalog checked in 2026. Hulu’s listing does not identify a separate early pilot starring Frances Fisher.

A Hulu press announcement from September 2017 documents a historical U.S. subscription-streaming agreement. That announcement is not proof of present-day exclusivity. Because catalogs, territories and subscription arrangements change, use the current Hulu title page for the country and date in which you are trying to watch.
Season-one DVD
Arlington Heights Memorial Library’s catalog records a Home Improvement season-one DVD containing all 24 first-season episodes, including an episode titled “Pilot.” This gives you an ownership route for the ordinary season-one opener, subject to finding a compatible disc and player.
The library record does not identify the Frances Fisher version, alternate pilot footage or special features. A marketplace listing should therefore be treated as a lead only until its exact edition, region, disc count and bonus-feature list are checked.
| Option | What the listing establishes | What it does not establish | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Disney+ | Eight-season series listing; season 1, episode 1 is “Pilot” | No confirmation of a separate Fisher cut | Watching the standard series by subscription |
| Hulu | Eight seasons and 203 episodes in the checked catalog | No confirmation of an alternate pilot | Watching the standard series where the current local catalog includes it |
| Season-one DVD | Library record lists all 24 first-season episodes, including “Pilot” | No edition-level confirmation of the Fisher version or extras | Owning the regular first season |
What “the original pilot” can mean
The aired episode called “Pilot”
In the official Disney+ catalog, “Pilot” is simply the first episode of season one. The library’s DVD record uses the same episode title. In ordinary viewing conversations, those references point to the regular episode released as part of the series.

The earlier casting version
D23’s September 21, 2018 article, “Home Improvement Debuts,” records a different production history. Frances Fisher was initially cast as Jill Taylor. After a week of rehearsals, she was replaced by Patricia Richardson a few days before the pilot was taped. The change explains why someone may use “original pilot” to mean an earlier version of the production rather than the episode that appears as season one’s opener.
A casting change alone does not prove that a finished, separately edited unaired pilot survives. It also does not prove that any surviving material is legally cleared, complete, restored or available to the public. The provider pages and library record checked here identify only the standard series and its normal “Pilot” episode.
Which option fits your viewing goal?
If you want to start the sitcom
Use the current Disney+ or Hulu listing in your territory and open season one, episode one, “Pilot.” You are looking for the broadcast series episode with Patricia Richardson as Jill Taylor.
If you want a permanent copy
Look for a season-one DVD whose episode list includes all 24 first-season episodes. Confirm the region code and playback format before buying. The library catalog verifies the season-one set category and contents, but not current retail stock or the inclusion of any alternate pilot.

If you specifically want Frances Fisher as Jill
Do not assume that searching for “Pilot” on a streaming service will locate it. The available listings use that title for the regular opener. No checked listing confirms a publicly watchable Fisher version, so the version-specific availability remains unresolved rather than established as either available or nonexistent.
If you are comparing streaming with disc ownership
| Decision factor | Streaming catalog | Physical season-one disc |
|---|---|---|
| Access model | Requires an active service plan and a supported internet-connected device | Requires the disc and compatible playback hardware |
| Catalog stability | Can change by country, plan and date | Once obtained, the listed episodes remain available independent of catalog rotation |
| Episode identified in the evidence | Season-one “Pilot” on Disney+; series listing on Hulu | “Pilot” among 24 first-season episodes |
| Early Fisher version | Not confirmed | Not specified in the cited library record |
How to check availability where you live
- Open the official Hulu or Disney+ website or app while signed in to the account and country you will use for viewing.
- Search for Home Improvement, not just “original pilot.” A search for the latter may return discussions, clips or the standard episode rather than a distinct production.
- Open the series page and inspect the season selector. On Disney+, verify that season one includes episode one, “Pilot.”
- Check whether your plan includes the title. A title can appear in a service’s general catalog while access varies by plan, billing country or distribution arrangement.
- Record the check date if you are sharing the information. Streaming rights can change, so an availability statement without a territory and date is incomplete.
JustWatch’s U.S. title page was used as a secondary cross-check and reported Hulu, Disney+ and other viewing or purchase routes at the time it was retrieved. It is an index, not the controlling catalog. Confirm any route on the provider’s own page immediately before relying on it.
How to verify a season-one DVD before buying
- Match the title, season number and episode count. The documented library set contains 24 episodes for season one.
- Read the complete episode list and confirm that “Pilot” appears among the first-season episodes.
- Check the disc region, television format and compatibility with your player or computer drive.
- Look for an explicit statement about deleted scenes, alternate pilots, unaired material or other extras. “Pilot” by itself means the standard episode unless the edition says otherwise.
- Ask the seller for the exact edition number or photographs of the packaging when the listing is vague. Different releases can use similar artwork while offering different supplements.
The library record is useful evidence that a season-one DVD set exists and that its listed contents include “Pilot.” It does not verify current inventory, price, seller reliability or the contents of every release sold under a similar title.

Established production history
D23 states that Fisher was first cast as Jill Taylor and replaced by Richardson after a week of rehearsals, shortly before the pilot taping. This is enough to distinguish the early casting plan from the cast of the aired series.

Unresolved release status
The checked Disney+ page identifies Richardson and the normal season-one “Pilot.” The checked Hulu page lists the series without an alternate-pilot designation. The library’s DVD record lists the standard episode but does not describe a Fisher version or bonus material. None of those records confirms where a complete Fisher pilot can be watched.
That evidence boundary matters. “Not listed” is not the same as “proven lost,” and it is not permission to promise that the version appears on a streaming service, DVD or clip channel. An edition-level bonus list or a direct statement from the rights holder would be needed to settle the question.

Open the result’s season and episode metadata. The Disney+ entry is season one, episode one of the regular series. A video labeled “original pilot” elsewhere may be commentary, a short excerpt or an unverified upload; its title alone does not establish that it is a complete Fisher version.

A DVD listing makes a broad promise
Compare its episode list and extras with the documented 24-episode season-one contents. If the listing does not name Frances Fisher, an alternate pilot or unaired footage, treat those features as unconfirmed.
You only want the historical casting information
Use D23’s account of the change: Fisher was replaced by Richardson shortly before the pilot was taped. That answers who was originally cast without implying that a watchable alternate cut has been located.
Timeline of the pilot question
- Initial casting: Frances Fisher was selected for Jill Taylor.
- Rehearsals: After a week of rehearsals, Fisher was replaced by Patricia Richardson.
- Pilot taping: D23 says the replacement occurred only a few days before the pilot was taped.
- Series cataloging: The regular opener is listed as season one, episode one, “Pilot,” on Disney+ and on the documented season-one DVD.
- Current viewing question: The checked catalogs do not resolve whether a complete Fisher version survives in an officially available release.
Bottom line for viewers
For the ordinary sitcom, check Hulu or Disney+ in your country, or obtain a season-one DVD that lists all 24 episodes. For the early Frances Fisher version, use cautious wording: the casting change is documented, but its present-day availability and inclusion on the cited DVD are not. No verified listing in the sources checked identifies that alternate version as a title you can currently stream or buy.
