The best TV location is the one that meets the requirements for both the screen and the fireplace while giving you a comfortable view and a properly supported installation. Compare the fireplace wall, another wall, and a TV stand before deciding. An above-fireplace position may suit the room, but it is not automatically safe for every TV or comfortable to watch.
Compare the locations your room allows
Assess each possible spot on four practical points: heat at the TV position while the fireplace is operated as directed; seated viewing height and angle; sightlines, glare, and usable floor space; and the wall or floor support, wiring, and installation requirements. These are planning considerations drawn from manufacturer guidance, not a formal scoring system.

Is it safe to put a TV above a fireplace?
There is no universal clearance or temperature rule that makes every TV-and-fireplace combination suitable. The requirements depend on the exact products and installation. Heatilator advises following both the fireplace and TV manufacturers’ specifications; Faber and Montigo also provide installation-specific cautions. Check the manuals for both units and the conditions at the intended TV position before installing.
Samsung’s U.S. support guidance says, “We do not recommend mounting your TV over a fireplace.” That is guidance for Samsung TVs, not a universal rule from all TV manufacturers. The same page says Samsung TVs should not exceed 104°F and advises checking the temperature where the TV would sit before considering this location. Treat 104°F as a Samsung-specific limit, not a general threshold for other televisions.

A mantel, heat deflector, alcove, or other measure should not be assumed to make a location suitable. Heatilator notes such measures as possibilities while still directing readers to follow both manufacturers’ specifications. Use the requirements for the exact fireplace rather than borrowing a clearance distance from another model.
Will an above-fireplace TV be comfortable to watch?
Heat and viewing comfort are separate questions. Samsung notes that a TV mounted over a fireplace will be well above seated eye level. Its general viewing guidance recommends placing the screen centre at eye level for comfortable viewing.

A tilt mount may improve the angle when a screen has to sit high, and Samsung suggests considering one. It does not reduce heat exposure, change fireplace clearance requirements, or override either product’s manual. If the screen centre would be far above seated eye level, compare another wall or a stand before settling on the fireplace wall.

A wall mount needs suitable structural support, not just an available patch of wall. Samsung says the wall must support the TV and that attaching the mount to a stud is appropriate in most cases. Brick, stone, a fireplace chase, unusual framing, or uncertain construction may require installation instructions suited to that specific substrate and structure.

Before committing to a location, confirm that the wall or floor setup, wiring route, and arrangement of connected devices work for the room. If you cannot establish that the structure and product requirements are met, do not treat the location as ready for installation.

Make the decision in order
- List the workable spots. Include the fireplace wall, other walls, and any safe, usable floor location for a stand.
- Check both manuals. Find the exact fireplace’s installation and clearance requirements and the TV’s operating limits and placement guidance.
- Assess heat at the proposed position. Follow the manufacturers’ instructions for operating the fireplace and evaluating conditions where the TV would be located. Do not infer suitability from a mantel or another model’s clearance figures.
- Check the seated view. Consider the screen centre, viewing angle, seating positions, and glare. A tilt mount addresses angle only.
- Verify support and room fit. Confirm appropriate wall or stand support, wiring, sightlines, and the effect on usable space.
- Choose the location that satisfies the requirements. If the fireplace-wall option does not meet both manufacturers’ instructions or compromises the view, use another workable location instead.
