If the TV is wall-mounted, mount the soundbar immediately below it using a compatible bracket. Above-TV placement can work when the TV is mounted unusually low, but only if the soundbar manufacturer permits it.
Correct placement affects dialogue clarity, Dolby Atmos performance, remote control signals, screen visibility and the safety of the installation.

The best default position
Place the soundbar in front of—not behind—the TV. Center it horizontally with the screen and the main seating position. This keeps dialogue acoustically aligned with the people speaking on screen and prevents the television from blocking or reflecting the sound.

- Keep the bar centered with the TV.
- Face it toward the seating area.
- Keep its front grille unobstructed.
- Place it close to the TV without covering the screen or its sensors.
- Follow the model’s installation manual before relying on general placement advice.
Placing a soundbar on a TV stand
A TV stand is usually the simplest and safest location, provided the furniture is deep and stable enough.
- Set the soundbar directly in front of the TV.
- Center it with the display, not merely with the furniture if the TV is offset.
- Support it evenly on a level surface using all supplied feet.
- Move it toward the front edge of the shelf so the shelf does not obstruct the front-firing speakers.
- Check that the bar does not cover the bottom of the picture or the TV’s infrared receiver.
Bose gives similar advice for stand-mounted systems, recommending that the front of the bar be as close as possible to the front edge of the shelf. A deep recess can make a soundbar sound muffled or reflected. An open shelf may work for a conventional front-firing model; an enclosed compartment is much more problematic.
Do not place the soundbar behind the TV. The television can block direct sound, reduce clarity and interfere with the intended stereo or surround presentation.
How much space should be left between the TV and soundbar?
There is no universal gap. Use the soundbar’s manual first and leave enough room for the TV’s infrared sensor, ventilation, controls, cables and any upward-firing speakers.
For context, the Bose Smart Ultra guide specifies at least 4 inches (10 cm) between the top of a wall-mounted soundbar and the TV. Sonos specifies 5.5 inches (140 mm) between the top of the wall-mount bracket and the TV for its Arc installation. That is a model-specific mounting measurement, not a rule for every soundbar.
A large gap is not automatically better. Keeping the bar reasonably close to the screen generally helps dialogue appear to come from the image, provided the installation remains safe and the speaker paths stay clear.

Should a soundbar go above or below the TV?
Below the TV: the normal choice
Below the display is generally best because it keeps the sound close to the actors’ mouths, works with most TV stands and wall-mount layouts, and leaves the bar facing into the room. It is also normally the better position for upward-firing Atmos speakers, assuming the TV, shelf or cabinet does not block them.
Above the TV: a valid fallback
Above-TV placement is not automatically wrong. It can be useful when the TV is mounted low and placing the bar below it would be awkward, unsafe or visually intrusive. Dolby identifies above-TV mounting as an option for a low-mounted TV, and some manufacturers document both above- and below-TV installations. For example, see the Sonos Beam guide.
Use the above-TV position only when:
- The manufacturer’s instructions allow it.
- The soundbar remains centered with the screen.
- It does not block vents, cables, sensors or controls.
- Its drivers are not obstructed.
- It can be aimed toward the seating area where the design requires this.
Do not mount the TV excessively high simply to create a preferred soundbar position. Comfortable viewing height and secure construction matter more than achieving exact ear-level alignment.
What changes with a wall-mounted TV?
When the TV is on the wall, the cleanest general arrangement is a soundbar mounted immediately below it. Samsung recommends mounting a soundbar slightly below a wall-mounted TV for optimized audio. The bar may also sit on a floating media console or low stand if the screen, sensor and speaker paths remain clear.
Before drilling or selecting hardware, check:
- The soundbar’s weight and mounting-hole pattern.
- Bracket compatibility and weight rating.
- Whether the bracket attaches to the wall or to the TV mount.
- Stud locations or correctly rated masonry anchors.
- Cable length and the bend radius behind the bar.
- Clearance for upward- and side-firing speakers.
- Whether an articulating TV mount will move the soundbar as the TV swivels.
- Whether the TV’s tilt angle could direct sound into the screen or wall.
For a heavy installation, uncertain wall construction or unusual masonry, use appropriately rated hardware and consult a qualified installer. Sony likewise advises seeking dealer or licensed-contractor guidance when the mounting arrangement is uncertain.

Atmos soundbars commonly use upward-firing drivers to reflect sound from the ceiling. They may also use side-firing drivers to create a wider soundstage. A shelf, TV overhang, cabinet roof or decorative object can block these paths.

For an Atmos bar:
- Do not place it beneath a shelf that obstructs the upward-firing drivers.
- Avoid deep recesses and closed cabinets.
- Keep the top clear so sound can reach the ceiling.
- Keep both ends clear of cabinet sides and nearby walls where possible.
- Follow the manufacturer’s ceiling, room-shape and clearance requirements.
Dolby specifically says that the path to the ceiling should not be blocked and that side-firing speakers need suitable paths to the listener and wall reflections. Sonos recommends at least 1 foot (0.3 m) from walls or other obstructions at both ends of the Arc; that measurement applies to the Arc and should not be generalized to every model.
Can the soundbar block the screen?
Yes. This is common with tall soundbars, low TV feet, center-pedestal stands and TVs placed on low furniture. Even a narrow strip of obstruction can hide subtitles, sports graphics, menus and content near the bottom of the image.
Measure the soundbar’s actual height and compare it with the clearance beneath the TV. If it does not fit, use one of these safer solutions:
- Raise the TV with a stable, manufacturer-approved riser or compatible universal stand.
- Wall-mount the TV and soundbar.
- Choose a lower-profile soundbar.
- Replace the furniture with a deeper, more suitable TV stand.
Do not improvise with unstable spacers, stacked books or partly supported equipment. Any replacement stand must support the TV’s weight, match its VESA requirements and provide adequate anti-tip stability.
Can it block the TV remote?
Many TVs have an infrared receiver near the lower bezel or bottom edge. A soundbar placed too close to the front of the TV can cover it. Sony specifically warns that this may block the remote-control signal.
Test power, volume, input, navigation and voice-control commands from the normal seating position. If the remote works inconsistently:

- Try HDMI-CEC, an app, an IR repeater or compatible pass-through equipment.
HDMI-CEC may be labelled Anynet+, Bravia Sync, Simplink, Viera Link or another name, and compatibility varies. Connecting through ARC or eARC can help with TV audio and basic control, but it does not guarantee that every remote function will work.

What if the TV is in a cabinet or alcove?
Furniture changes the acoustic conditions. A deep shelf can trap sound behind its front edge, while side walls can create uneven reflections. An enclosed cabinet may also block the remote path and, for Atmos models, the ceiling and side-firing paths.
If the bar must sit in furniture, use an open-front compartment, keep its grille at the front edge and follow the specified top and side clearances. A conventional front-firing soundbar is more tolerant of an open shelf than an Atmos model. If the cabinet cannot preserve the required clearances, a shorter conventional bar or different furniture arrangement may perform better than a larger Atmos bar forced into the recess.
Where should the subwoofer go?
The subwoofer does not need to sit beside the soundbar or TV. Start along the same wall as the TV, then try another position if the bass is weak, boomy or uneven. Keep it out of a closed cabinet and away from furniture that rattles.
A corner is not automatically the best location. Room dimensions, construction and furniture affect bass substantially. See Dolby’s setup guide for general subwoofer placement advice.

The remote works intermittently
The soundbar may be covering the IR receiver. Move it forward or lower, then retest from the seating position. HDMI-CEC or an IR repeater may help where supported.
Atmos sounds flat
Check for blocked upward or side-firing drivers, a shelf overhead, an enclosed cabinet, unsuitable room geometry or an incompatible audio signal. Remove obstructions, follow the clearance instructions, run room calibration and confirm the TV, source, connection and soundbar support the desired format.
Dialogue seems to come from the wrong place
Center the bar with the display and move it closer to the screen. Then reduce nearby obstructions, run calibration and adjust dialogue enhancement if necessary.
Sound is muffled or absent
Check that the front grille is clear and the bar is not behind the TV or deep inside furniture. Confirm that HDMI or optical cables are fully inserted and that the TV is set to the soundbar’s input. Sony lists improperly inserted cables as a possible cause of missing or interrupted sound; see its support guidance.
Final placement checklist
- Is the soundbar centered with the TV and seating position?
- Is it in front of, rather than behind, the display?
- Is the front grille unobstructed and near the shelf edge?
- Is the entire picture visible?
- Can the TV’s remote sensor receive commands?
- Are upward- and side-firing speakers clear?
- Does the manual specify a minimum gap or side clearance?
- Is the bar level, stable and fully supported?
- For wall mounting, are the bracket and anchors rated for the installation?
- Is HDMI ARC/eARC connected to the TV’s labelled ARC/eARC port?
For TV audio, Dolby recommends the ARC/eARC connection path and HDMI-CEC for straightforward control, although menu names and capabilities vary between manufacturers.
