It is a private single-family residence, not a museum or public attraction. The movie used the house’s recognizable exterior, but most of the McCallister home’s interior scenes were filmed on sets built inside a former New Trier Township High School gym.

- 671 Lincoln Avenue
- Winnetka, Illinois 60093
- Chicago metropolitan area, North Shore
Winnetka is a separate village north of Chicago, so the house is not technically in Chicago proper. The film sometimes refers to the street as “Lincoln Boulevard,” but current local and property records identify it as Lincoln Avenue.
The house is a large red-brick Georgian or Georgian Revival-style residence built in 1921. The Winnetka Historical Society identifies 671 Lincoln as the location used for the McCallister home, and Village of Winnetka landmark-preservation materials also associate the property with Home Alone.

What part of the movie was filmed at the house?
The exterior shots—the images most viewers immediately recognize—were filmed at 671 Lincoln Avenue. That includes the front of the house and the surrounding exterior views that establish the McCallister residence.
But the movie’s interior is not a faithful filmed tour of the real property. Most interior scenes were recreated as full-scale sets in the gym at New Trier Township High School’s West Campus in Northfield, Illinois. The gym provided the production with enough space to construct the rooms, hallways, basement areas and other settings required for the burglars’ elaborate slapstick traps.
A small number of interior-looking shots used portions of the actual residence, including the main staircase, attic and much of the first-floor landing. The safest way to understand the distinction is this: the exterior and a few limited interior areas came from 671 Lincoln Avenue; most of the interior seen on screen was built as a set.

No. The house is a private residence and is not operated as a museum, regularly scheduled tour site or public open house.
Fans may be able to view the property from public areas where legally permitted, but conditions can change. Visitors should not enter the property, approach or touch gates, cross fencing, block the road, photograph residents, or otherwise interfere with the people who live there. A recognizable movie location does not make a private home public property.
Do not plan a trip on the assumption that you will be allowed inside or that a particular viewing point will be available. The property has reportedly undergone renovation activity, but those reports are not an official visitor-access announcement and should not be interpreted as evidence that the house is opening to the public.

The sale is useful current context, but it does not change the property’s private status. The identities of current private owners should not be guessed at or published without authoritative public confirmation.
Why does the house look different inside the movie?
The apparent mismatch comes from the production’s practical needs. A real family home could provide the distinctive exterior, but filming every interior sequence there would have limited camera positions, complicated lighting and made the large-scale stunt work much more difficult.
Building the interior on a soundstage allowed the filmmakers to control the layout and safely stage Kevin McCallister’s traps. It also explains why viewers can remember a continuous, maze-like house even though the real building’s rooms and circulation do not necessarily match the movie’s floor plan.
In other words, visiting 671 Lincoln Avenue can show you the real-world exterior that inspired the movie’s most famous setting, but it cannot reproduce the complete on-screen house tour.

- Confirm the address: use 671 Lincoln Avenue, Winnetka—not “Lincoln Boulevard.”
- Treat it as a private home: do not expect tours, entry or a public interior viewing.
- Stay in lawful public areas: obey signs, fencing, traffic restrictions and any requests from residents or local officials.
- Keep the visit brief and low-impact: do not gather in the street, touch gates, trespass or disturb the neighborhood.
- Check current conditions: renovation work, access restrictions and local rules can change after publication.
If the goal is to revisit the entire fictional house rather than simply see its exterior, watching the film again is the more complete experience. A physical copy such as the Home Alone DVD lets viewers compare the familiar exterior with the constructed interiors and spot which parts of the house were designed for the movie.
