AC drain pan

Where Is the AC Drain Pan? How to Find the Primary and Overflow Pans

The primary AC drain pan is inside the indoor unit, directly below the evaporator coil. Start at the indoor air handler or furnace—not the outdoor condenser. If the equipment is in an attic or above a finished ceiling, a second, larger overflow pan may sit underneath the unit.

Where to look for the primary AC drain pan

In a central split-system air conditioner, moisture condenses on the indoor evaporator coil as warm air passes over it. The primary pan sits at the bottom of the coil enclosure to collect that water and direct it into the condensate drain line. Trane describes this path from the indoor equipment through the pan and drain line in its AC drain-line guide.

Locate the indoor air handler or the cabinet containing the evaporator coil. Depending on the home and system, it may be in a utility closet, basement, attic, or mechanical room; the coil cabinet may be attached to, above, or below a furnace, or incorporated into ductwork. Carrier outlines common indoor coil and equipment locations in its evaporator-coil overview.

A condensate pipe emerging from the indoor unit can help you identify the coil enclosure, but the pipe’s route or visible outlet does not show exactly where the pan is. The drain may terminate outdoors, in a crawl space, or elsewhere, depending on the installation.

How the primary and secondary pans differ

Some installations have two pans. The primary pan is part of the coil assembly and handles ordinary condensate. A secondary, auxiliary, or overflow pan is a separate tray under the equipment or coil cabinet, intended to catch water if the primary pan or its drain overflows. It is not the pan inside the coil enclosure.

Feature Primary pan Secondary/auxiliary pan
Position Inside the bottom of the evaporator-coil enclosure Under the whole unit or coil cabinet, when installed
Role Collects routine condensate and directs it to the drain Catches overflow to help protect the area below
Drain clue Connects to the primary condensate drain May have a separate drain line or other overflow protection, depending on the installation
What you may see Usually enclosed with the coil; access and panel arrangement vary May be visible beneath an attic- or ceiling-mounted unit

Daikin’s coil installation instructions describe a secondary pan beneath the entire unit for cooling applications where condensate overflow could cause damage, with a separate drain line in the specified installation. The instructions apply to the relevant equipment; actual requirements depend on the unit manual and local rules. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Building America Solution Center also discusses condensate pan function and secondary-pan protection in its condensate drain-pan guidance.

Finding the pan without opening unsafe parts

  1. Find the indoor unit. Check the utility closet, basement, attic, or mechanical room, and look around the furnace or air-handler cabinet.
  2. Identify the coil enclosure. The evaporator coil is in the indoor equipment or an attached cabinet. The primary pan is below the coil, within that assembly.
  3. Look for a separate tray below the cabinet. If the unit is above a finished ceiling or in an attic, a wider tray underneath may be the secondary pan.
  4. Check the equipment manual before accessing panels. Pan location, orientation, and homeowner access differ by model. Do not open sealed refrigeration sections or reach into energized equipment.

Do not assume that every home has a visible secondary tray or that the primary pan is accessible through the same panel. For model-specific locations, follow the equipment instructions. Carrier’s drain-line cleaning guidance also notes that equipment placement, including attic and closet installations, affects what can be seen and accessed.

If you find water in or around the pan

Water in the primary pan during cooling is part of normal condensate collection; the water should flow out through the drain. Water in a secondary pan indicates that water has reached the overflow protection, rather than the normal collection path. A continuing leak, water near electrical equipment, or a pan in an inaccessible attic or ceiling installation warrants help from an HVAC professional. Avoid reaching into wet or energized equipment.
