The City of Charleston’s historic-resources survey dates its period of significance to circa 1853–1857 and records its National Register listing in 2014. Bravo reported in December 2025 that Altschul sold the house to her son, Whitney Sudler-Smith, and continued to live there.
What is Patricia Altschul’s house called?
The Charleston estate featured in connection with Altschul and Southern Charm is the Isaac Jenkins Mikell House, at 94 Rutledge Avenue. The City of Charleston’s survey is the clearest source for the property’s address and historic-record details. It gives the house a period of significance of circa 1853–1857 and lists its National Register entry in 2014.
The record’s period of significance is a date range associated with the property’s historic importance; it should not be mistaken for a precise construction date. Bravo’s December 2025 account reports Altschul’s statement that the house was built in 1853.
How did the house become part of the show?
Bravo’s December 2025 coverage connects the house to Altschul’s life on Southern Charm and recounts its changing use. According to Altschul’s account as reported by Bravo, it served as the Charleston Public Library for about 30 years. A Philadelphia couple bought it in 1960 and divided it into two residences. Altschul said she bought the property in 2008, brought it back into one home, and restored it.

She described the restoration in a 2020 Instagram caption quoted by Bravo: “I bought it in 2008 and made it into a single home and restored it for more than the sale price.” That is her account of the work, not an independently verified renovation-cost figure.
Bravo also reported in December 2025 that Altschul sold the house to Sudler-Smith while continuing to live there. That is an entertainment-news report, not a deed check; legal ownership has not been independently established here. Sudler-Smith’s description, also quoted by Bravo, that it is “one of the greatest houses in America” is a personal opinion rather than an official historic designation.

What is known about its architecture and interiors?
Architectural Digest described the property as an antebellum landmark built in the early 1850s and documented an interior redesign by Mario Buatta. Its feature offers a publication-era snapshot, not confirmation that the rooms and furnishings remain unchanged today.
Rooms and materials documented by Architectural Digest
- A double drawing room with a carpeted interior.
- A stair hall and a morning room.
- A dining room with antique Zuber wallpaper.
- A library, guest room, and master bedroom.
- Colefax and Fowler wallpaper and fabrics, Stark carpets, antique furniture, and a Waterford chandelier.
These details help explain the home’s widely noted decorative character, but they should not be treated as a current inventory. The City’s historic survey supplies the core date and property identification; Architectural Digest focuses on interior design. The available evidence does not establish an architectural style beyond the descriptions attributed to those sources.

Can you visit Patricia Altschul’s house?
No property-specific public tour offering has been established. The South Carolina Department of Archives and History notes generally that most National Register properties are privately owned and not open to the public. Bravo describes the Isaac Jenkins Mikell House as a home, so readers should treat it as a private residence and enjoy published photographs or the show rather than approach the property. No specific tour schedule or property-level access rule is established here.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is this the same as Peter’s Point Plantation?
No. Peter’s Point Plantation is a separate historic property on Edisto Island associated with the Mikell family. The South Carolina Department of Archives and History record for Peter’s Point concerns that island property, not Altschul’s Charleston house. For the home at 94 Rutledge Avenue, the City of Charleston survey is the relevant source for its location and historic-record details.
