Construction of Birmingham City’s 62,000-seat Powerhouse stadium has no confirmed start date. The most specific timeline comes from a report dated 8 May 2026 that quoted the club’s infrastructure lead, Nick Smith. It said a formal planning application for the Sports Quarter was expected in March 2027, and that stadium building could begin later in 2027 if the planning process moved quickly. Those dates are forecasts, not council-confirmed milestones, and nothing located confirms that planning permission has been granted.
Where the project stands
Birmingham City Council describes site remediation and early-stage development as underway. That work is preparation for the wider Sports Quarter, and it should not be read as the main stadium build having started. The stadium itself depends on planning approval, which has not been confirmed.

Why planning approval controls the start date
The sequence that matters is application, decision, and then construction. Under the reported plan, the Sports Quarter application would be submitted in March 2027. Construction could only follow a decision granting consent, so a later-2027 start depends on the council moving quickly. Any delay in submission or decision pushes the start date back, and the 2030/31 completion target would be at risk with it.
Three date comparisons that are easy to confuse
Most confusion about this project comes from treating different kinds of dates as one. Keep these three pairs separate:

- Site works versus stadium construction. Remediation and early-stage development are underway. The main stadium build is not established as started.
- Application submission versus approval. A March 2027 submission is an expectation. Approval is not dated in the sources located.
- Forecast start versus target completion. A possible later-2027 start is conditional. The 2030/31 season is a target for finishing the stadium.
What each source supports
- Birmingham City Council, Birmingham Central Heart Prospectus 2026. Gives the 62,000 capacity, describes the wider project, reports current early-stage works, sets out the completion plan, and estimates 8,400 jobs for the wider Sports Quarter.
- Birmingham Live report, 8 May 2026 (syndicated by Yahoo Sports). Gives the March 2027 application expectation and the possible later-2027 construction start, attributed to Nick Smith. No verbatim quotation from him was available in the text located, so the timeline should be presented as reported comment rather than a direct quote.
- Heatherwick Studio, Birmingham City F.C. Powerhouse Stadium. Describes a 62,000-capacity venue at Bordesley Green, targets completion for the start of the 2030/31 football season, and says a public engagement programme would begin in 2026.
- Birmingham City Council, Planning applications and documents. Explains how to check application progress, plans and decision notices. It does not itself show the status of the stadium application.
Note that the most recent reporting located is dated May 2026. Later developments, such as a submitted application or a decision, may exist and should be checked directly.

The council’s development overview also describes an arena of 15,000 to 20,000 seats. That is a separate venue from the stadium, and its capacity should not be used for the 62,000 figure. The 8,400 jobs figure is a council projection for the whole Sports Quarter, not a measured result and not stadium employment alone.
Quick Recap
How to check the planning status yourself
- Open Birmingham City Council’s Planning Online service, which the council describes as the place to check progress of current planning applications and appeals.
- Search for “Sports Quarter” or the Bordesley and Bordesley Green site references.
- If an application appears, open it to view its status, plans and documents, and any decision notice.
- If no application appears, the March 2027 submission has not yet been made as far as the register shows. That is consistent with the reported timeline, not a sign of delay.
Signals that would change the timeline
- A stadium-specific planning application appearing on the council register, which would confirm the submission date.
- A council decision on that application, which is the point at which a construction start becomes realistic.
- Any revised completion date from the council or the designers. The 2030/31 season is currently a target and could move.
