Make your last mow when the grass has stopped actively growing—not on a fixed date or simply after the first frost. Keep mowing as needed while the lawn continues to grow; once growth has stopped, you can put the mower away for winter.
How to tell when it is time to stop mowing
Grass type, local climate, and recent weather all affect the timing. Watch the lawn rather than relying on a calendar: if it is still putting on growth, continue mowing as needed. Iowa State University Extension says cool-season Kentucky bluegrass foliage stops growing when daytime highs are consistently below 50°F. That temperature cue applies to that grass and regional guidance; it is not a universal threshold for every lawn.
Regional calendars illustrate the variation. The University of Minnesota Extension says growth in its region generally stops around the end of October. Iowa State says central Iowa Kentucky bluegrass often stops in early to mid-November. In Arkansas, Extension advises mowing warm-season grasses until the first frost, while cool-season tall fescue is mowed until growth ceases, sometime near Thanksgiving. These are local examples, not dates to apply everywhere.
Use a simple decision process
- Identify your grass type and location. If you are unsure, check local Cooperative Extension guidance; recommendations for cool-season and warm-season lawns can differ.
- Check whether the lawn is still growing. Continue mowing while it needs a cut. For Iowa cool-season Kentucky bluegrass, consistently below-50°F daytime highs are one local sign that foliage growth is stopping.
- Make the final cut at a safe height. Keep your usual recommended mowing height unless local guidance or a specific lawn concern supports a small adjustment. Never scalp green turf, and do not remove more than one-third of the leaf area in a single mowing.
- Clear heavy leaf cover. Mulch fallen leaves into small pieces or remove excessive debris so it does not blanket the grass. Minnesota Extension suggests considering collection of excessive debris after the final mow.
Should the last cut be shorter?
There is no single height-change rule that applies across regions. Colorado State University Extension says there is no reason to lower the cut in fall and recommends keeping the same 2.5–3.25-inch height used through the season. Arkansas Extension likewise advises against raising or lowering mowing height. Illinois Extension says a slightly shorter final cut is possible but usually unnecessary, and warns against scalping.

Maryland Extension offers a local alternative: its lawn calendar suggests a final cut a half-inch shorter than usual to improve air circulation and reduce snow mold risk. Treat that as regional advice, not a nationwide requirement. If local guidance does not call for a change, staying at your normal recommended height is the safer general approach.
Finish with a clean cut and a clear lawn
Use a sharp mower blade; Minnesota Extension notes that dull blades leave jagged cuts that can make plants more susceptible to disease. Before storing the mower, make sure heavy leaves and other debris are not left covering the turf. Mulch leaves finely when practical, or collect excessive debris.
