When Should You Stop Mowing for the Year?

The right time to stop mowing depends on when your lawn stops growing. Use local conditions and grass type—not a universal fall date—as your guide.

Stop mowing when your lawn stops producing meaningful new growth—not on a fixed date. Keep mowing as needed while the grass is growing, then put the mower away once growth has stopped. The timing depends on local weather and grass type, so regional dates are examples rather than a schedule for every yard.

How to tell when it is time to stop mowing

Watch the lawn’s growth rather than the calendar. If the grass is still getting long enough to need a cut, continue mowing. Iowa State, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Nebraska and Idaho extension services all use the end of active growth as the cue. Iowa State’s guidance is direct: “Continue to mow the lawn until the grass stops growing in the fall.” (Iowa State University Extension and Outreach)

Growth slows at different times depending on weather, location and grass species. For example, Iowa State says Kentucky bluegrass in central Iowa usually stops growing in early to mid-November when daytime highs are consistently below 50°F. Minnesota Extension gives around the end of October as a general regional estimate for Minnesota lawns. Neither date should be treated as a nationwide cutoff. (Iowa State University Extension and Outreach; University of Minnesota Extension)

How short should the last cut be?

There is no single final mowing height agreed on by these extension sources. Keep the lawn at a suitable height for its grass and avoid scalping it. Minnesota recommends maintaining a typical residential Midwest lawn at 3 inches or higher and removing no more than one-third of the leaf tissue in a single mowing. Local recommendations on a lower final cut differ. Nebraska suggests 2.5–3 inches for cool-season grass and 2–2.5 inches for the final setting. Wisconsin says the last cut may be a little shorter than normal, but does not need to be excessively short. Idaho says lowering the mower a notch or two can help with disease, while cautioning against cutting too low and favoring more frequent mowing into late fall. Follow guidance suited to your region and grass rather than treating any one final-height figure as universal. (University of Nebraska–Lincoln)

Why fall mowing and leaf cleanup still matter

Keep up with necessary cuts while the grass is growing, and clear deep leaf piles before snow covers the lawn. Excessively tall grass going into winter may contribute to snow mold and vole activity in northern regions; deep leaves can smother grass and promote disease. These concerns are reasons to avoid letting fall growth and debris build up—not reasons to mow dormant or frozen turf on a schedule. (University of Minnesota Extension; University of Wisconsin–Madison Extension)

What if you live somewhere with mild winters?

Winter mowing needs vary with climate and grass species. In north Florida, a homeowner may not need to mow during winter, but the calendar alone does not determine whether mowing is appropriate. Use the same practical test: mow when the lawn is actively growing enough to need it. (University of Florida IFAS Extension)
