When Is the Best Time to Shovel Snow?

No single hour is best for everyone. Clear manageable amounts during a long storm only when conditions are safe, then finish after snowfall when possible.

There is no universally best hour or snow depth for shoveling. If snow is falling for a long time and visibility and conditions are safe, clearing manageable amounts periodically can keep each pass lighter. Finish clearing once the snowfall ends and conditions permit. This is practical guidance based on official advice to move small amounts at a time—not a fixed schedule or threshold.

Should you shovel while it is still snowing?

When snowfall is prolonged, you can clear smaller amounts periodically if weather and visibility are safe. Moving a little at a time may mean less snow to handle in each pass. The National Weather Service recommends moving small amounts per pass, but it does not prescribe an interval or accumulation depth at which everyone should start.

If conditions are hazardous, wait until it is safe rather than shoveling through poor visibility or dangerous weather. Check your local forecast before heading outside; winter conditions can include blowing snow, squalls and low visibility.

Should you wait until the snow stops?

You do not have to wait for the storm to end if you can safely clear manageable amounts along the way. After snowfall ends, clear what remains when conditions permit. Neither approach comes with a universal clock-time rule: the useful choice depends on the weather, how much and what kind of snow has fallen, your ability to work safely, and any local requirements.

How to shovel more safely

Snow shoveling is strenuous, and heavy, wet snow can contribute to back injuries and heart attacks. Use a measured pace and stop before you overexert yourself.

  • Dress warmly in layers, stay dry and drink water.
  • Move small amounts of snow with each pass and take frequent breaks.
  • Work slowly, avoid sweating excessively, and go indoors if you are shivering constantly or conditions become unsafe.
  • Stop shoveling if you feel exhausted. The National Weather Service says: “Take frequent breaks. Stop shoveling entirely if you feel exhausted!”
  • If you have heart disease or high blood pressure, follow your doctor’s advice about shoveling and other hard work in cold weather.

Confusion, fumbling hands, memory loss, slurred speech, drowsiness or exhaustion can be warning signs of hypothermia. Numbness or unusually firm, waxy, pale skin can indicate frostbite. Go indoors and seek appropriate medical help if these symptoms occur.

After shoveling, reduce the risk of slipping

Keep steps and walkways as free of ice as possible. The CDC recommends rock salt or another chemical de-icer; sand may also reduce slipping risk. The right treatment can depend on the surface and conditions, so do not assume one option suits every walkway or temperature.

Choosing a snow shovel

A shovel is a useful winter-preparedness item, but the cited guidance does not identify a preferred type, design or model. Choose equipment you can handle comfortably and focus on moving small amounts per pass rather than trying to clear a large load at once. The CDC also lists a shovel among supplies to keep in a vehicle for winter storms.
