230 volts is roughly twice 115 volts, but those numbers are nominal supply labels—not a complete guide to whether an appliance can be connected safely. In the United States, household supply is commonly described as 120 volts (also called 115 or 110 volts) at 60 hertz; many other countries use 220–240 volts, often at 50 hertz. Check the appliance’s voltage range, frequency rating and plug requirements before connecting it.
Why are 115 volts and 120 volts both used?
They are common ways of describing U.S. residential AC supply, not a guarantee that every outlet measures exactly the same voltage. The U.S. Department of Energy describes common household supply as 120 volts at 60 Hz, and also refers to typical residential line voltage as 115 volts, noting that 110 volts and 120 volts are used as names for it. DOE: Electricity 101 and DOE: Battery charger test procedure
How can a U.S. home have both 120-volt and 240-volt circuits?
Typical U.S. residential service is arranged to provide 120-volt circuits as well as 240-volt circuits. A wiring diagram from the U.S. Department of Energy shows two hot conductors and a neutral; the arrangement supports both voltages. Some higher-load appliances use a dedicated 240-volt connection, but that does not mean an ordinary outlet supplies both voltages. DOE: United States Electricity Industry Primer
Does 230 volts use more electricity than 115 volts?
Not by itself. Electrical power in watts equals voltage in volts multiplied by current in amps. For a given power, a higher voltage means lower current; energy use depends on the appliance’s power and how long it operates. Voltage alone does not establish how much electricity a device consumes or what it costs to run. DOE: Federal Fleet Training

Will a 115- or 120-volt appliance work on 230 volts?
Only if the appliance is rated for the supply. Read its input label and manual: a label such as “INPUT: 110–240V” indicates that the device accepts supplies within that range, according to Electrical Safety First. Also check the frequency rating. A device marked only for 115 or 120 volts should not be connected directly to a 230-volt supply. Electrical Safety First: Using electricals overseas
Why does frequency matter?
Voltage and frequency are separate properties of AC supply. Common U.S. supply is 60 Hz; UK supply is 50 Hz. A difference can affect how some appliances operate: Electrical Safety First gives the example of a 50 Hz clock running faster on 60 Hz supply. Check the device’s stated frequency range as well as its voltage rating. DOE: Electricity 101 and Electrical Safety First: Using electricals overseas

- Power drill cordless with 1/2" single sleeve ratcheting chuck provides tight bit gripping strength, making bit changes faster and more secure
Do you need a plug adapter or a voltage converter?
A plug adapter changes the physical plug connection to fit a socket. It does not change voltage or frequency. If an appliance is not rated for the local supply, it may require a suitable voltage converter or transformer; check that device’s rating and the appliance’s power draw. Converters have maximum wattage or amperage limits, so a converter that is undersized or unsuitable is not a safe workaround. Electrical Safety First: Using electricals overseas
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should you check before connecting an appliance?
- Input voltage: Confirm that the supply falls within the appliance’s marked range.
- Frequency: Confirm that its rating includes the local supply, such as 50 Hz or 60 Hz.
- Plug and socket: Check plug shape, grounding and socket compatibility; an adapter addresses fit only.
- Power demand: If using a converter, verify its maximum rating against the appliance’s requirements.
- Installation: Do not change wiring or install a 240-volt outlet yourself. For a new circuit or questions about a home’s wiring, consult a qualified local electrician; installation requirements vary.
The figures above describe general U.S. and UK examples, not every country’s supply or an assessment of a particular building or appliance.
