Before building grain storage, decide what crop you will store, how much you may need to hold at peak, for how long, and whether the system must dry grain or only cool and aerate it. Those decisions shape the capacity, handling flow, fan system, monitoring, safety measures and site design. Moisture targets and equipment requirements depend on the crop and conditions; a qualified agricultural engineer and local authorities should review the project before construction.
Start with the job the storage system must do
Storage and drying are related, but they are not the same operating task. A system intended to cool and aerate grain may need a different airflow and equipment setup from a bin intended to dry wet grain. Decide which job the system must perform before selecting its structure or fans.
| Planning question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Which crop or crops will be stored? | Moisture targets and drying behavior differ by crop. Do not apply one crop’s recommendation to another. |
| What is the expected peak volume? | Capacity must reflect the maximum amount you expect to hold, not just a typical harvest. |
| How quickly must grain be received and moved? | Harvest and unloading rates influence the handling flow and the space needed for trucks, conveyors and dryers. |
| How long will the grain be held, and what is its intended use? | Grain sold, fed, dried or retained for later marketing may have different handling and storage needs. |
| Must the system dry grain, or only cool and aerate it? | The purpose, crop, starting moisture, fill depth and local weather all affect fan and air-distribution design. |
Allow room to operate and maintain trucks, conveyors, dryers and other equipment safely. There is no universal capacity formula established for every crop and project; calculate the required capacity and handling flow using crop and engineering data for your operation.
Set storage targets for the crop and holding period
Moisture and temperature affect how well grain keeps. University of Minnesota Extension gives the following recommendations for wheat and barley; they are Minnesota Extension guidance for those crops, not universal construction specifications.

| Crop and holding period | Moisture guidance | Source and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Wheat held less than six months | 14% moisture or less | University of Minnesota Extension, Storing wheat and barley; page accessed 2026. |
| Wheat held more than nine months | 13% moisture or less | University of Minnesota Extension, Storing wheat and barley; page accessed 2026. |
| Barley | About 0.5 percentage points drier than the corresponding wheat values above | University of Minnesota Extension, Storing wheat and barley; page accessed 2026. |
The cited guidance does not establish a recommendation here for every crop or every holding period. Use current crop-specific and regional guidance for the grain you plan to store, and confirm targets for your actual conditions.
Choose airflow for aeration or drying
If the purpose is cooling and aeration
University of Minnesota Extension’s wheat-and-barley farm-bin guidance gives an aeration rate of 0.1 cubic feet per minute (cfm) per bushel. That figure applies to the source’s wheat-and-barley context; it is not a universal fan specification for other crops, bin arrangements or operating conditions.

Cooling grain helps reduce mold and insect activity, but airflow selection still needs to match the crop and system. Have fan performance and air distribution checked against the intended use and actual grain conditions.
If the purpose is natural-air drying
Natural-air drying depends on enough airflow to move the drying zone all the way through the grain before spoilage occurs. Grain above the drying zone remains at its initial moisture until the zone reaches it. Fan selection therefore needs to account for crop, initial moisture, fill depth, local weather and the drying objective. Do not treat an aeration rate as a drying design.

University of Minnesota Extension also publishes separate guidance on natural-air corn drying. A corn system should be planned using corn-specific guidance rather than extrapolating the wheat and barley values above. Verify the complete fan and air-distribution design with qualified agricultural engineering support.
Plan inspection, monitoring and maintenance
Storage needs ongoing management after construction. Provide a practical way to measure grain moisture and temperature at multiple locations, and to inspect for mold, insects, crusting or heating. A crop-compatible moisture meter, probe thermometer or installed temperature cables may help with these checks; no particular model is endorsed here, and a device alone does not make stored grain safe.

For its wheat-and-barley guidance, University of Minnesota Extension recommends checking monthly in cold weather and every two weeks in warm weather, recording temperatures at several locations, and using probes or installed temperature cables. Treat that schedule as contextual guidance, not a rule for every crop, climate or storage system.
Include access and time for routine checks of the roof, ducts, fan operation, unloading equipment and access controls. A monitoring plan is useful only if people can carry it out without taking unsafe shortcuts.

Build worker safety into the layout and procedures
Flowing grain can engulf a person quickly. University of Minnesota Extension describes it this way: “Flowing grain is dangerous, and behaves much like quicksand.” Its Grain bin safety page, reviewed in 2020, reports nearly two dozen grain-entrapment deaths each year in the United States and says around 80% of reported engulfments involve a person inside a bin while grain-unloading equipment is running. The page does not state the underlying data year; these figures are attributed to that source and are U.S.-specific.
Design the operation to prevent unplanned bin entry and make safe procedures workable. Plan to control access, post warnings, safely shut down and lock out equipment, and have a rescue plan. University of Minnesota Extension advises that entry be limited to trained workers following safe procedures, and that no one enter alone. When crusted grain is a concern, its guidance recommends working from outside where possible rather than entering to break it up.
Check the site, foundation and local requirements before committing
Site suitability and engineering details depend on the property and jurisdiction. Investigate drainage and flood exposure, foundation conditions, utility service, access and vehicle turning space, neighboring uses, and room for future expansion. These are planning considerations, not a list of verified code requirements.
Before construction, consult local building and zoning authorities about applicable approvals and engage a qualified engineer familiar with grain storage. The appropriate structural loads, foundation, permits, setbacks, electrical and fire requirements cannot be determined without the project location and design. Do not select a site or build from a generic bin plan in place of that review.
