What to Use If You Don’t Have Kitchen Twine: The Best Substitute for Every Cooking Task

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The best substitute depends on what the twine is doing. Use Food-grade toothpicks or wooden skewers to secure a stuffed chicken breast, roulade, or pinwheel; parchment or foil to contain a packet or wrap a roast; and cheesecloth, a coffee filter, or a tea infuser to bundle herbs and spices. For a continuous tie around a roast, use only an explicitly food-safe, oven-rated silicone cooking band—or buy 100% cotton cooking twine for the closest all-purpose solution.

Do not substitute ordinary string, yarn, jute, craft cord, plastic twist ties, household rubber bands, tape, or unidentified elastic. Materials that are safe for crafts or packaging are not automatically safe for direct food contact or oven heat.

Choose the replacement by the job

What you are cooking Best substitute How to use it What to watch for
Stuffed chicken breast, roulade, pinwheel, or rolled meat Food-grade toothpicks or wooden skewers Pin the seam at several points, or run a skewer lengthwise through it. Count every pick or skewer and remove all of them before serving.
Turkey or chicken legs Food-grade toothpicks, an oven-safe silicone band, or no tie when the recipe allows Secure the legs, or tuck the wings and legs as directed by the recipe. Use only a product labeled for food contact and the intended heat.
Keeping a roast cylindrical Oven-safe silicone cooking bands; parchment or foil as a wrapping method Use bands around the roast, or wrap it loosely enough to cook evenly. Wrapping can reduce browning and is not identical to trussing.
Closing a parchment packet Folded and creased parchment, toothpicks, or a dish holding the seam down Make several firm folds, add food-grade picks if necessary, or place the packet seam-side down. Use cooking parchment within its stated temperature limit.
Bouquet garni, soup herbs, or whole spices Food-grade cheesecloth, muslin, coffee filter, tea infuser, or spice ball Contain the aromatics in a pouch or infuser and remove it after cooking. This replaces twine’s removal function, not its structural strength.
Shape or presentation only Often nothing Put a roll seam-side down, or tuck poultry wings under the bird. The food may spread or cook less uniformly, so check its internal temperature.

1. Use toothpicks or wooden skewers for stuffed foods

Food-grade toothpicks and wooden skewers are the most useful emergency substitutes when the food has a defined seam. They work well for stuffed chicken breasts, beef or pork roulades, cabbage rolls, pinwheels, and small parchment packets.

Roll the food tightly, then place plain food-contact toothpicks across the seam at even intervals. For a longer or thicker roulade, a wooden skewer running lengthwise through the seam may be quicker and more secure than using many short picks. Insert the picks so their positions remain visible after cooking.

Because toothpicks provide separate points of pressure rather than the continuous tension of twine, they may not hold every part of a large roll equally tightly. Use enough to prevent the seam opening, but avoid piercing so deeply that the picks become difficult to find.

Toothpick safety checklist

  • Use plain food-grade picks or cooking skewers, not decorative picks with unknown paint, glue, glitter, or coatings.
  • Count how many you insert.
  • Write the number down if several people will be serving the food.
  • Remove every pick before slicing or serving.
  • Wood can darken or scorch when exposed in a dry oven. It is less problematic when embedded in moist food, but it is not the best choice for direct flame, broiling, or very high-temperature grilling unless the product is specifically rated for that use.

2. Use silicone cooking bands for a continuous tie

An oven-safe silicone cooking band is the closest reusable substitute when you need continuous tension around poultry or a roast. Unlike toothpicks, a band supports the food all the way around and can help an irregular cut retain a compact shape.

Use only a band explicitly labeled for food contact and oven cooking at the temperature your recipe requires. A silicone product sold for food storage is not automatically approved for direct oven use, and a household rubber band is not an acceptable equivalent. Check the package for its maximum temperature, cooking instructions, and whether the band may remain on the food during cooking.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Remove the band before carving or serving unless the manufacturer specifically says it can safely remain in place. Do not assume that all silicone products have the same heat rating; one commercial cooking-band specification, for example, lists a limit of 450°F/223°C, but that rating applies to that product rather than to silicone bands generally.

3. Wrap with parchment or foil when containment matters

Parchment or aluminum foil can solve the problem when twine was being used to close a packet, contain juices, or support a roast. These materials wrap food rather than bind it, so the cooking result can change.

Parchment

For a parchment packet, fold the edges over several times and crease them firmly. You can add food-grade toothpicks if the folds will not stay closed, or put the packet seam-side down in a baking dish. Use parchment intended for cooking and stay within the temperature limit printed on its packaging. Conventional-oven parchment products may have limits around 400°F/204°C, but the package for the specific product controls.

Parchment is useful when the goal is gentle steaming and moisture retention. It is not the best substitute when you need a roast exposed for deep browning.

Aluminum foil

Foil is stronger than parchment and can hold a wrapped roast or packet together without any tie. Wrap loosely enough to leave room for expansion, and keep the foil away from heating elements. A tightly sealed foil wrap can trap steam, soften the exterior, and prevent the browning you would get from an exposed, trussed roast.

Do not put completely foil-wrapped food in a microwave. Metal and foil can reflect microwave energy, cause uneven heating, spark, or damage the appliance. Follow the microwave manufacturer’s instructions even for small pieces of foil.

4. Use a pouch or infuser for herbs and spices

If twine is holding together a bouquet garni or spice bundle, you do not need another string-like material. The purpose is simply to keep loose aromatics together and make them easy to remove.

Place bay leaves, thyme, parsley stems, peppercorns, cloves, or other whole spices in a square of food-safe cheesecloth or muslin. Gather the corners into a pouch and fold the top underneath so the contents cannot escape. A coffee filter can work for a small, lightweight bundle; fold it securely before placing it in the pot. A tea infuser or spice ball is convenient for loose herbs and spices, provided it is food-safe and large enough for the ingredients to circulate.

A tough outer leek leaf can also wrap a small group of herbs without string. Rinse the leaf, place the aromatics inside, fold or roll it closed, and remove it before serving. The leek may add a mild allium flavor.

These methods are suitable for stocks, soups, sauces, and braises. They are not strong enough to bind a roast, close a roulade, or truss poultry.

5. Sometimes, skip the tie

Twine is often used to preserve a uniform shape, improve handling, or make a roast cook more evenly. It is not always essential to the recipe.

For a rolled food that is stable on its own, place it seam-side down in the pan. The weight of the food can help hold the seam closed while the exterior browns. For poultry, tuck the wing tips under the body and position the legs according to the recipe. Some recipes use twine mainly to make the bird easier to handle or more attractive when served.

Skipping the tie may allow the food to spread, expose more filling, or create areas of different thickness. Adjust by checking the thickest section with a food thermometer rather than relying only on the recipe’s time. A thermometer is especially important for large poultry and irregular roasts because shape changes can alter how quickly the center cooks.

What not to use

  • Ordinary string, yarn, jute, sisal, and craft cord: These may contain dyes, finishes, fibers, or treatments not intended for food contact or oven heat.
  • Plastic twist ties, coated wire, and packaging closures: They may melt, burn, shed coatings, or contain metal that is unsuitable for the cooking method. Never use them in a microwave unless the manufacturer expressly authorizes that exact use.
  • Household rubber bands or unidentified elastic: They can melt, smoke, break, or transfer unwanted compounds. Use a cooking band only when its food and heat ratings are clear.
  • Waxed, flavored, colored, or ordinary dental floss: Some sources mention plain unwaxed floss, but it is a weaker recommendation than food-grade picks, parchment, or silicone bands. Do not use floss unless it is clearly food-safe, unflavored, undyed, and suitable for the cooking temperature—and it should not be the default emergency choice.
  • Tape, staples, plastic wrap, and office paper products: Adhesives, plastics, and coatings may melt, burn, or contaminate food. They are not dependable cooking binders.

How to choose in 30 seconds

  1. Is the twine holding a seam? Use food-grade toothpicks or a wooden skewer.
  2. Is it making a continuous loop around a roast? Use a labeled oven-safe silicone cooking band, or wrap the roast in parchment or foil if browning is not the priority.
  3. Is it closing a packet? Fold and crease cooking parchment, use toothpicks, or put the seam underneath in a dish.
  4. Is it bundling herbs or spices? Use cheesecloth, muslin, a coffee filter, a tea infuser, or a spice ball.
  5. Is it only for presentation? Try seam-side-down placement or tuck the poultry, then verify doneness with a thermometer.
  6. Is the material’s food-contact or heat rating unknown? Do not use it.

If you cook this way regularly

For frequent roasts, roulades, and trussed poultry, keep a spool of food-grade butcher’s twine in the kitchen. Look for 100% cotton cooking twine labeled for trussing poultry and roasts, and follow the package instructions. It is more versatile than any single emergency substitute because it can secure seams, shape roasts, and position poultry without changing the cooking environment as much as foil or parchment.

It is still worth keeping food-grade toothpicks and a small pouch of cheesecloth or a tea infuser nearby: each solves a different problem more effectively than twine.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use regular cotton string instead of kitchen twine?

No. Ordinary cotton string may contain dyes, finishes, sizing, or treatments that are not intended for food contact or oven heat. Use twine labeled for cooking, food-grade toothpicks, or another substitute matched to the task.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use toothpicks in the oven?

Plain food-grade toothpicks are commonly used to secure stuffed foods, but follow the product instructions. Exposed wood can darken or scorch in a dry oven, and picks are not automatically suitable for broiling, grilling over direct flame, or very high heat. Count and remove every pick before serving.

Can I use dental floss to tie a roast?

It should not be the default choice. Avoid waxed, flavored, colored, or ordinary dental floss. If floss is considered at all, it must be clearly food-safe, plain, unwaxed, undyed, and suitable for the cooking temperature; food-grade toothpicks or cooking twine are safer, clearer options.

Can I use aluminum foil instead of kitchen twine?

Foil can wrap or contain a roast or packet, but it does not perform exactly like twine. It can trap steam and reduce browning. Do not use completely foil-wrapped food in a microwave unless the appliance instructions specifically allow that use.

What is the best substitute for bouquet garni twine?

Use food-safe cheesecloth or muslin, a coffee filter, a tea infuser, a spice ball, or a tough outer leek leaf. These contain herbs and spices so they can be removed after simmering.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Use food-grade toothpicks or wooden skewers for seams, parchment or foil for packets and wrapping, and cheesecloth or an infuser for herbs and spices. For a true replacement around a roast, choose an explicitly food-safe, oven-rated silicone band. If you want the most versatile long-term solution, keep 100% cotton cooking twine on hand.
