Pack a lightweight go bag with essentials for the first several days away, then keep a larger household emergency kit for supplies you may not be able to carry. Prioritize water, ready-to-eat food, medicines, documents, communications, and the needs of everyone in your household. If officials order an evacuation, leave promptly; do not delay to finish packing.
Start with a go bag—and keep the larger kit separate
A go bag is the portable set of essentials you can take when you need to leave quickly. A full household emergency kit can hold more supplies for sheltering at home or for a vehicle. FEMA recommends emergency supplies for home as well as portable kits for workplaces or vehicles; its basic kit checklist is a useful starting point. What fits in a bag depends on how you will travel, how far you may need to carry it, and whether you can resupply.
Build the bag around your household and local hazards rather than aiming for a universal loadout. Water, medical equipment, mobility needs, weather, transport, and access to supplies all affect what is realistic to carry.
Pack these essentials first
Water and food
FEMA’s 2020 hurricane evacuation checklist recommends at least a three-day supply of food and water. Choose ready-to-eat, non-perishable food and account for the needs of household members. This is a baseline, not a guarantee for a long detour: the amount you can carry and the time before resupply will vary with your vehicle or other transport, weather, and route conditions.

Medicines and medical needs
The same FEMA checklist recommends at least one week of medications and copies of prescriptions. Pack daily medicines, glasses or contact lenses, and any medical equipment or assistive technology you rely on, along with backup batteries where applicable. Where possible, plan prescription refills with your clinician or pharmacy; individual medication decisions should follow professional advice.
Communication, light, and basic safety
- Phone, charging cable, and a charged backup battery or other alternative charging option.
- Battery-powered or hand-crank radio and extra batteries. Use multiple ways to receive alerts; a radio does not replace instructions from local officials.
- Flashlight, extra batteries, first-aid kit, whistle, and dust mask.
- Moist towelettes, garbage bags, and personal hygiene supplies.

Documents, money, and practical items
Keep identification and copies of medical, financial, insurance, and property records in a waterproof portable document container. Ready.gov’s flood guidance also recommends password-protected digital copies. Keep digital records accessible in a way that protects sensitive information.
FEMA’s hurricane checklist also names cash and payment cards, keys, local maps, weather-appropriate clothing, sturdy shoes, and blankets or sleeping bags. Include a manual can opener if your food requires one, and a wrench or pliers if useful for your circumstances.

Tailor the bag to the people and animals going with you
FEMA advises households to account for individual needs, children and infants, pets, and medical equipment. Add what your household actually relies on:
- Infants and young children: formula or other needed food, diapers, and age-appropriate supplies.
- Pets: food, water, medication, and handling supplies.
- Accessibility and care: hearing or vision aids, mobility equipment, backup power for devices, and supplies needed for caregiving.
- Clothing and comfort: extra layers and footwear suited to the local weather and conditions.
Animal access and equipment policies can differ by shelter. Check local emergency-management guidance and shelter rules ahead of time when possible.

Keep it reachable and ready to go
- Choose a place you can reach quickly. Keep the bag together near an exit or another accessible location. A smaller kit in a vehicle or workplace may make sense for your routine.
- Check contents periodically. Review medicines, food, batteries, documents, clothing sizes, and pet supplies so the bag still matches your household’s needs.
- Make a route and communication plan. Identify where you will go, how you will get there, and how household members will contact one another. Ready.gov’s preparedness overview emphasizes emergency alerts and alternative ways to charge a phone.
The review interval is a practical household choice; the cited FEMA checklist does not prescribe a schedule.
During an evacuation, follow local instructions
Packing is only one part of being ready. Know your intended destination and route, and follow local evacuation and road instructions. Ready.gov’s flood guidance says to evacuate when instructed and never drive around barricades. That warning is specific to flood hazards; for any emergency, defer to current directions from local officials. Do not delay departure to retrieve belongings or attempt to travel through a road closure.
