The useful question is not simply whether a home improvement retailer’s sales increased. Read the report as a chain of evidence: did more customers buy, did each customer spend more, did the company keep enough of each sale as profit, and did those profits turn into cash? Then test management’s forecast against the actual quarter and the risks that could change it.
This method works for a retailer such as The Home Depot or Lowe’s without turning the exercise into a stock recommendation. Company-reported figures are period-specific, so confirm the latest release and filing before drawing a current conclusion.

What an earnings report can—and cannot—tell you
An earnings release is a compressed account of one fiscal period. It usually combines a headline result, selected operating metrics, management commentary, an outlook and non-GAAP measures. The accompanying Form 10-K (annual report) or Form 10-Q (quarterly report) supplies definitions, detailed financial statements, risk factors and management’s discussion and analysis.

The report can show how the business performed in that period and what management expects next. It cannot, by itself, prove that a retailer has won market share, that a sales increase will persist, or that a forecast will be achieved. Weather, housing activity, project timing, promotions, acquisitions and accounting choices can all affect the comparison.

1. Establish the period and make the comparison fair
Before reading a percentage, write down exactly what it compares. Home improvement retailers may use different fiscal calendars, week counts and definitions of “comparable” or “same-store” sales.
- Fiscal period: record the quarter or year and its ending date. A 13-week quarter is not automatically comparable with a 14-week quarter.
- Comparison basis: distinguish year-over-year growth from sequential growth against the immediately preceding quarter.
- Store base: note openings, closures, acquisitions and divestitures. Reported sales can rise because the company owns more locations even when established stores are flat.
- Definition: use the retailer’s own comparable-sales definition. The inclusion of e-commerce, relocated stores or recently acquired locations may differ.
Put the release beside the filing. The filing is where you confirm how the company calculated comparable sales, which businesses are included and whether unusual events affected the period.
2. Capture the headline numbers, but do not stop there
Make a small worksheet before interpreting the narrative. Record the current period and prior-year amount for each item, then calculate the change yourself.

| Measure | Why it matters | Question to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Net sales | Scale of revenue recognized in the period | Did growth come from existing stores, new stores, acquisitions, prices or volume? |
| Comparable sales | Performance of the established store and digital base under the company’s definition | What happened to transactions and average ticket? |
| Gross margin | Sales left after merchandise costs | Did product cost, pricing, mix, freight or promotions change? |
| Operating income and margin | Profit after selling, general and administrative costs and other operating expenses | Did labor, occupancy, technology, shrink or transportation absorb the gross profit? |
| Net earnings | Profit after interest, taxes and non-operating items | Are changes operational, financial or tax-related? |
| Diluted EPS | Earnings allocated to each diluted share | Did share-count changes help EPS even if total earnings were weak? |
EPS growth alone is not proof of better operations. A lower share count, a tax benefit or a one-time item can lift EPS while sales or operating income deteriorate. Read the income statement and the diluted-share calculation together.
3. Decompose comparable sales into customer behavior
A comparable-sales percentage is an outcome, not an explanation. Look for the two components that produce it: comparable customer transactions and comparable average ticket (the average amount spent per transaction). Mix and pricing may be disclosed separately and can further clarify the result.
Why the headline can mislead
A positive comparable-sales number can coexist with fewer shopping trips. If the remaining customers spend enough more, the average ticket can offset the transaction decline. That may indicate successful pricing or larger projects, but it can also signal that casual or lower-income customers are pulling back. The report will not always establish which interpretation is correct; use management’s disclosed evidence rather than guessing.

Lowe’s fiscal 2025 illustration
Lowe’s fiscal 2025 annual report, published in 2026, reported comparable sales up 0.2%. The company broke that into a 3.0% increase in comparable average ticket and a 2.8% decline in comparable customer transactions. The figures demonstrate why the components matter: spending per transaction rose enough to leave the overall comparable-sales figure slightly positive, despite fewer transactions. This pattern describes that fiscal year, not every Lowe’s quarter or every retailer.
When you see a similar pattern, investigate product categories, professional-customer activity, project size and pricing. Do not label it “healthy” or “weak” until the company’s commentary and the period’s context support that judgment.
Questions that sharpen the analysis
- Are transactions declining across stores, or only in a particular customer group or category?
- Is a higher ticket caused by prices, larger quantities, premium mix or genuinely more projects?
- Did promotions pull demand forward or trade margin for volume?
- Are digital sales included in the comparable figure, and are returns treated consistently?
4. Follow sales through gross and operating margins
Sales growth is not profit growth. Start with gross profit and divide by sales to obtain gross margin; then do the same with operating income to obtain operating margin. Compare both with the prior-year period and read management’s bridge or explanation.
Gross-margin drivers
Retailers commonly discuss merchandise costs, vendor funding, freight and transportation, product mix, pricing and promotions. Shrink—inventory lost through damage, error or theft—can also affect merchandise margin. A higher average ticket does not guarantee higher gross profit if discounts or product costs rise faster than prices.
Operating-margin drivers
After gross profit, examine store labor, wages and benefits, occupancy, advertising, technology, distribution, depreciation and other selling, general and administrative expenses. A retailer can hold gross margin steady while operating margin falls because it adds labor, expands delivery capacity or absorbs higher logistics costs. Conversely, expense discipline can expand operating margin even when sales are modest.
GAAP versus adjusted results
Official releases from both Lowe’s and The Home Depot identify adjusted or other non-GAAP measures. Treat them as supplementary views, not replacements for generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP). Find the reconciliation table and ask:

- What exact cost or gain was excluded?
- Did the item occur once, or has a similar adjustment appeared repeatedly?
- How would operating income, net earnings and EPS look under GAAP?
- Is management changing the definition from one period to the next?
An adjusted margin can help isolate a restructuring charge, but it can also make recurring costs look exceptional. Keep a separate line for GAAP results in your worksheet.
5. Test whether earnings became cash
Profit recorded under accrual accounting is not the same as cash collected. In the cash-flow statement, compare net cash provided by operating activities with net income. A sustained gap deserves investigation, although timing differences can make one quarter unusually high or low.
Working capital and inventory
Inventory absorbs cash before merchandise is sold. Review inventory growth against sales growth and the company’s explanation for seasonal build, new products, supply-chain timing or slower turnover. Rising inventory with weak comparable sales may increase markdown risk; the filing should support any claim about excess stock.

Capital expenditures show what the retailer is spending on stores, distribution centers, technology and maintenance. Compare the amount with operating cash flow and distinguish expansion from routine upkeep when the company discloses the split. Do not call cash “free” unless you have defined which capital spending is deducted.
Debt, liquidity and shareholder returns
Read debt maturities, interest expense, cash balances, available credit and other liquidity information. A company can report strong earnings while refinancing needs or higher interest costs constrain flexibility. Also note share repurchases and dividends: they affect cash and diluted shares, so they should be considered alongside EPS rather than treated as operating performance.
6. Read guidance as a forecast with a track record
Place the new outlook beside the actual quarter and the prior outlook. Identify whether guidance was raised, reaffirmed, narrowed, reduced or withdrawn, and whether the change reflects sales, margins, tax, interest or capital spending.

For a current example, The Home Depot’s August 18, 2026 release reported fiscal 2026 second-quarter sales of $47.9 billion, up 5.7%, and reaffirmed fiscal 2026 guidance that included comparable-sales growth of approximately flat to 2.0%. Those are company-reported results and expectations for the stated period; a later release may supersede them.
Guidance is management’s expectation, not an established result. Read the forward-looking-statement discussion and list the stated risks. Compare the midpoint (when one is provided) with the year-to-date performance, then ask what must happen in the remaining quarters to reach it. A forecast that requires an abrupt acceleration deserves more scrutiny than one consistent with current trends.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.7. Put housing, weather and other risks in context
Home improvement demand is exposed to forces outside a retailer’s control. Housing turnover, mortgage conditions, repair emergencies, severe weather, inflation, tariffs and changes in consumer confidence can affect both demand and costs. Acquisitions, store-base changes and supply disruptions can distort comparisons.
Use the risk factors and management discussion for the specific period. For example, a storm-related repair surge may lift sales in one quarter but does not establish a permanent demand trend. Tariffs may raise product costs, but the report must indicate whether the company passed them through, absorbed them or changed sourcing before you assign a margin effect.
8. Compare Home Depot and Lowe’s without false precision
Cross-company comparisons are useful only when the measures and periods are aligned. Confirm each retailer’s fiscal calendar, comparable-sales definition, transaction and ticket coverage, treatment of digital sales, and GAAP-to-adjusted reconciliation.

The available official materials provide Home Depot’s fiscal 2025 headline figures—$164.7 billion in net sales and $14.2 billion in earnings—and Lowe’s fiscal 2025 comparable-sales components, but not a complete same-period metric set for both retailers. Those figures therefore illustrate the method, not a current “winner.”
9. A repeatable 15-minute reading checklist
- Identify the period. Write the fiscal dates, week count, year-over-year or sequential basis, and any acquisition or divestiture.
- Record the headline table. Capture sales, comparable sales, operating income, net earnings and diluted EPS for the current and prior-year periods.
- Open the comparable-sales footnote. Record transactions, average ticket, pricing, mix and channel definitions.
- Calculate margins. Divide gross profit and operating income by sales, then read the explanation for each change.
- Separate GAAP from adjusted. Read every reconciliation and note recurring exclusions.
- Trace cash. Compare operating cash flow with net income; review inventory, capital expenditures, debt, liquidity and repurchases.
- Audit the outlook. Put current guidance beside prior guidance and actual year-to-date results; note every change.
- Mark the risks. Tie housing, weather, inflation, tariffs, labor, supply and store-base comments to disclosed evidence for that period.
- Compare only like with like. Verify definitions and fiscal calendars before ranking companies.
Common reading mistakes and how to correct them
- Equating positive comparable sales with more customers: check transactions and average ticket separately.
- Calling revenue growth profitable: inspect gross and operating margins and the cost bridge.
- Using adjusted EPS as the main result: start with GAAP and read the reconciliation.
- Ignoring cash because earnings are positive: review operating cash flow, inventory and capital spending.
- Treating guidance as a promise: record the forecast date, assumptions and stated risks.
- Declaring a competitor superior from one metric: align definitions, periods and customer mix first.
- Attributing a change without evidence: use the filing’s explanation or describe the cause as unestablished.
A disciplined reading ends with a written explanation of what changed, why management says it changed, which figures corroborate that explanation, and what could make the next period differ. That is a more reliable use of an earnings report than reacting to a single sales or EPS headline.
