Before driving into an unfamiliar parking garage, check its posted vehicle-height limit, confirm how that facility takes payment, and locate accessible parking or EV charging if you need it. The entrance sign and the operator’s current facility page or map are more reliable than assumptions based on another garage.

A few minutes of checking can help you avoid arriving with a vehicle that exceeds a posted limit, discovering that your preferred payment method is not accepted, or finding that the space or charger you need is not on a convenient accessible route. These details vary by facility, so use current information for the particular garage and trip.

Will your vehicle fit?

Compare your vehicle’s height as equipped with the clearance posted for the garage entrance and, where available, the level or route you plan to use. Include anything mounted above the vehicle, such as a roof rack. If the operator provides a facility map or current clearance information, check it before setting out; the Ann Arbor Downtown Development Authority, for example, directs users to its operator map for garage height limits and availability. That is a local practice, not a service every garage provides.

The key question is not simply how tall the vehicle was when it left the factory. Use the height of the vehicle in the configuration you will drive into the garage. If equipment mounted on the roof changes that height, account for it when comparing against the posted clearance. Check the entrance sign as you arrive as well as the operator’s current information beforehand. If the operator’s map identifies a limit for a particular level or route, do not assume that it applies identically to every part of the facility.

  • Read the clearance sign at the entrance before proceeding.
  • Check the garage operator’s current facility page or map for limits that may apply to a particular level or route.
  • Use the height of the vehicle in its current configuration, not just the manufacturer’s base vehicle specification.
  • If the limit is missing or unclear and your vehicle is close to it, contact the operator or choose a garage whose limit is confirmed.

If two sources do not provide a clear answer, do not try to resolve the uncertainty by relying on another garage’s clearance or on a general idea of what garages allow. The limit is a facility-specific fact. A confirmed limit for one entrance, level, or garage does not establish the limit for another. When the information is unclear and the vehicle is close to the stated limit, ask the operator before driving in or select a facility with confirmed information.

Do not treat an accessibility clearance as a garage-wide clearance. In U.S. accessibility standards, a 98-inch (2,490 mm) minimum vertical clearance applies to van-accessible parking spaces, their access aisles, and the vehicle routes serving them. It does not mean that every level or entrance has 98 inches of clearance. That figure is tied to the specified van-accessible spaces and the routes that serve them; it is not a substitute for checking the garage’s own entrance sign and facility information.

How does this garage take payment?

Confirm both the accepted payment methods and when payment is due. Garages can differ: a facility may collect payment at entry, at exit, or at a pay-on-foot kiosk. Do not assume that a parking app listed by a city for metered spaces also works in its garages.

“How do I pay?” has two parts: which method the operator accepts and where in the trip you use it. A method listed for a particular facility may be tied to a particular point in the process, such as entry, exit, or a kiosk. Check the instructions for the garage you plan to use rather than inferring the process from the city, a nearby meter, or a different structure operated by the same organization.

A local example: Ann Arbor downtown structures

The Ann Arbor Downtown Development Authority lists hourly payment at its downtown structures by cashier at the structure exit, credit card at entry and exit, pay-on-foot kiosk, or prepaid Easy Pay card. These options describe those structures; they should not be generalized to other garages. Check the operator’s current instructions for the garage you intend to use.

DEWALT 20V MAX Cordless Drill and Impact Driver, Power Tool Combo Kit , Includes 2 Batteries, Charger and Bag (DCK240C2)
  • Ergonomically Designed: Work in tight areas with a compact design that gets into tough spots
  • Compact and Lightweight: Both tools are designed to fit into difficult to reach spaces. The 1/4" impact driver has a length of 5.55 in. and weighs just 2.8 lbs, while the 1/2" drill/driver measures only 7.5 in. and weighs 3.6 lbs
  • Both the DEWALT impact driver and electric drill driver feature integrated LED work lights with a convenient 20-second delay, ensuring enhanced visibility in dimly lit or challenging work areas
  • One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips
  • Power drill cordless with 1/2" single sleeve ratcheting chuck provides tight bit gripping strength, making bit changes faster and more secure

The example is useful because it shows why the timing matters: some of the listed methods involve paying at the structure exit, while others involve a card at entry and exit or a separate pay-on-foot kiosk. It does not show what a different garage accepts, whether another city offers the same choices, or whether an app can be used for garage parking. Confirm the current instructions for your specific facility and do not assume that an app listed for metered parking applies to a garage.

Check the payment sequence before you enter

  1. Open the operator’s official page for the specific garage and look for payment methods and instructions.
  2. Note whether you take a ticket or pay when entering, and whether payment happens at an exit lane or kiosk.
  3. Confirm that your intended payment method is accepted at the facility, rather than relying on a citywide app listing or another garage’s rules.
  4. If the instructions are unclear, contact the operator before arrival so you know what to do at the entrance and exit.

In particular, do not plan around a payment method solely because it is accepted somewhere else. No general preference among drivers or universal garage payment method is established here. Current rates for a facility are not specified here either. Check the operator’s current information for the garage’s price and payment instructions rather than transferring a rate or rule from another location.

Where is accessible parking, and how do you reach the entrance?

In the United States, ADA.gov says accessible spaces in parking lots and garages must be on the shortest accessible route to the accessible entrance. The U.S. Access Board describes accessible routes as connecting access aisles to entrances and advises that these routes should not be blocked. Look at the facility map for accessible spaces and the route to the entrance you need; the nearest space by distance is not necessarily useful if its accessible route is obstructed or does not connect to your destination.

To check the route, consider more than the location of a marked parking space. The accessible route connects the access aisle with an entrance, and the route should remain unblocked. If you are choosing between facilities, compare the accessible-space location and route to the entrance you need, not just the number of spaces or the distance from a space to the building. A route that is shown on a map is useful information, but the guidance also emphasizes that routes should not be blocked.

ADA.gov’s summary of the 2010 ADA Standards also says at least one of every six accessible spaces must be van accessible. The 98-inch (2,490 mm) minimum vertical clearance applies to van spaces, their access aisles, and the vehicle route serving them. It is a defined accessibility requirement, not a promise about the clearance of the whole garage.

That distinction matters when planning a trip in a taller vehicle. The 98-inch requirement relates to the van-accessible space, the adjoining access aisle, and the route serving those spaces. It should not be read as assurance that every entrance or every level provides that height. Check the particular garage’s own clearance information for the route you will use, including the approach to a van space if that is relevant to your trip.

Pay stations and routes

The Access Board says pay stations serving accessible parking must be served by an accessible route, and their operable parts must meet applicable reach and operation requirements. Ticket dispensers designed to be used from inside a vehicle are not subject to those operable-part requirements. Accommodation policies may still be needed. If you expect to use a particular kiosk or ticket dispenser, check its location and the operator’s instructions rather than assuming every payment point works the same way.

This is another reason to check how the facility expects drivers to pay. A pay-on-foot station and a ticket dispenser used from inside a vehicle are not interchangeable in the guidance. The station serving accessible parking must be reached by an accessible route, and its operable parts have applicable reach and operation requirements. The cited guidance makes a specific distinction for ticket dispensers used from inside a vehicle, while noting that accommodation policies may still be needed. If you have a particular access need, use the operator’s current information or contact the operator to ask about the relevant payment point and available accommodation.

ADA.gov describes its guidance as informal and not legally binding. For compliance questions, consult the applicable ADA Standards and state or local requirements; those jurisdictions may impose additional rules. The accessibility information here is U.S. guidance and is intended to help readers understand what to check, not to replace the applicable standards or determine whether a specific garage complies.

What should you check before using an EV charger?

Charging is a separate facility check, not something to infer from the presence of parking spaces. Verify that the garage currently has a charger available for your needs, its location, and the rate with the operator. If accessible charging matters, check the route to the charger as well as the charging space itself.

Do not assume that an EV charger is available just because the garage has parking, or that information about a charger at another facility applies to this one. Availability, location, and rate are operator-specific details that should be confirmed with current facility information. If you are comparing garages, compare these details alongside the ordinary parking and payment information, and check the particular charger you may use rather than treating all charging points as equivalent.

Access Board guidance says routes to accessible chargers in garages should connect to the garage’s accessible pedestrian entrance and maintain at least 98 inches of clearance along the vehicle route. That route clearance is a specific accessibility condition; it does not establish the clearance of every garage entrance or level. If accessible charging is important to your trip, verify the route to the charger and its connection to the accessible pedestrian entrance, as well as the charger’s current availability and rate. The 98-inch figure for the specified vehicle route should not be substituted for the facility’s own general clearance information.

How to choose between two unfamiliar garages

Compare the facilities on the details that affect your trip, not on assumptions about what garages usually provide:

What to compare What to verify
Vehicle fit Posted height limit against your vehicle’s height as equipped, including roof-mounted equipment.
Payment Accepted methods and whether payment is due at entry, at exit, or at a kiosk.
Accessible parking Accessible-space location and an unblocked accessible route to the entrance you need.
Accessible EV charging, if needed Current charger availability, location, rate, route to the accessible pedestrian entrance, and vehicle-route clearance.
Access conditions Current availability and any operator-stated access restrictions.

Use the comparison as a practical decision sequence. First, rule out a garage if its confirmed height limit does not accommodate your vehicle as equipped, or if the limit cannot be confirmed and your vehicle is close to it. Next, verify that you can use one of the facility’s accepted payment methods and understand whether payment takes place at entry, exit, or a kiosk. If you need accessible parking, compare the space location and accessible route to the entrance you need. If you need accessible EV charging, also check the charger’s current availability, rate, route, and applicable vehicle-route clearance. Finally, check current availability and any access restrictions stated by the operator.

These details are facility-specific. Confirm them on each garage operator’s current page or with the operator directly; one facility’s height, payment options, charger locations, rates, availability, or restrictions do not establish another’s. A city-level app listing, a past visit, or information about a neighboring garage is not a replacement for the chosen garage’s current instructions. If a detail that affects your trip cannot be confirmed, contact the operator before setting out or compare it with another facility whose information is clear.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my car fit in this parking garage?

Compare your vehicle’s height in its current configuration, including roof-mounted equipment, with the clearance on the entrance sign and the operator’s current information for the garage, level, or route. If the limit is unclear and your vehicle is close to it, contact the operator or choose a facility with a confirmed limit.

How do I pay at a parking garage?

Check the specific garage operator’s current instructions for accepted methods and when payment is due. Payment may occur at entry, at exit, or at a pay-on-foot kiosk; do not assume that an app listed for metered parking is accepted in a garage.

Where is accessible parking in a parking garage?

In U.S. ADA guidance, accessible spaces in garages must be on the shortest accessible route to the accessible entrance. Check the facility map for the space and route to the entrance you need, and remember that accessible routes should not be blocked.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does the 98-inch clearance apply to the whole garage?

No. The 98-inch (2,490 mm) minimum applies to van-accessible spaces, their access aisles, and the vehicle routes serving them under the cited U.S. accessibility standards. It is not a general clearance promise for every entrance or level.

How can I check whether an accessible EV charger will work for my trip?

Confirm current charger availability, location, and rate with the operator. If accessible charging matters, also check the route to the charger, its connection to the accessible pedestrian entrance, and the applicable vehicle-route clearance.

The Bottom Line

Before you arrive, confirm the specific garage’s clearance against your vehicle as equipped, its payment method and sequence, and—if needed—the accessible-space or EV-charger location and route. Use current operator information, and do not treat one garage’s limits, rates, payment options, or accessibility details as rules for another.
