The right gas range must fit the opening and delivery route, match your home’s natural-gas or LP supply, meet its electrical and ventilation requirements, and provide the burner layout and oven capacity you will actually use. Measure first, read the exact model’s installation manual, and arrange qualified installation before placing an order.
Start with the space, not the advertised width
A gas range can be described as “30 inches” and still fail to fit your kitchen. The nominal width is only a starting point. Whirlpool’s 2026 buying guidance calls about 30 inches a common width for a full-size gas range, but the appliance’s actual body dimensions, required side clearances, countertop relationship, rear spacing and anti-tip provisions are model-specific.

Measure the opening
- Width: Measure the opening at the front, middle and back. Record the narrowest measurement. Check whether the countertop edge, backsplash or cabinets reduce the usable width.
- Height: Measure from the finished floor to the underside of the countertop at several points. Account for flooring that may be installed later and for the range’s adjustable feet.
- Depth: Measure from the wall to the front edge of the countertop, then check whether handles, oven doors or control panels project beyond that line.
- Clearances: Use the exact model’s installation diagram for side, rear, overhead and combustible-surface clearances. Do not substitute a generic “30-inch range” dimension for the manufacturer’s diagram.
- Floor and leveling: Confirm that the floor is strong and level enough for the appliance and that the adjustable feet can compensate for the actual floor condition.
Keep the model number with your measurements. A retailer’s summary page may round dimensions or omit a clearance that appears in the installation manual.

Measure the delivery path
Measure every doorway, hallway, stair, turn and threshold between the delivery entrance and the kitchen. Include the thickness of doors that must open, wall trim that narrows a passage, and the height available when the range is tilted or moved around a corner. A range that fits the final opening may still be impossible to bring into the room without removing a door or changing the delivery plan.

Confirm the fuel and electrical connections
Before comparing burners or smart features, establish what utilities your home can supply. Gas ranges are commonly configured for natural gas, while some homes use liquid propane (LP). The two fuels are not interchangeable without the correct equipment and adjustment.
Natural gas versus LP
Find out whether the property has an active natural-gas service, an LP tank, or neither. If the appliance and household fuel do not match, verify the model’s approved conversion procedure before buying. Some ranges support LP conversion; others may have restrictions or require specific parts. Never assume that a conversion kit is included, that the supplied kit is correct for your installation, or that conversion is a do-it-yourself task.
LG’s gas-range guidance, for example, says its units ship configured for natural gas and that LP conversion should be completed by a qualified LP installer. That is manufacturer guidance for LG equipment, not a universal rule for every brand, model or jurisdiction. Follow the exact manual and local gas-safety requirements.

A gas range still needs electricity for ignition, controls, lights, timers and, on some models, convection or other oven functions. Verify the receptacle location, grounding and circuit requirements in the model’s installation instructions. LG’s published guidance specifies a grounded 120-volt, 60-hertz circuit for its gas ranges; another model may state different requirements.

- Locate the receptacle before delivery; it may be behind the range or in an adjacent cabinet, depending on the installation diagram.
- Confirm that the circuit is properly grounded and suitable for the specified load.
- Do not rely on an extension cord unless the manufacturer explicitly permits it; many installation instructions prohibit one.
- Have an electrician correct an unsuitable outlet or circuit before the range arrives.
Ask the gas supplier or licensed installer what shutoff valve, connector, regulator and pressure requirements apply. Those details belong to the installation, not to a generic shopping checklist, and must match the exact appliance.
Plan ventilation before ordering
Ventilation is part of choosing a gas range, not an optional finishing touch. ENERGY STAR explains that cooking produces particulates and humidity, while gas cooking appliances emit carbon monoxide and nitrogen dioxide. Its indoor-air guidance reports that the Environmental Protection Agency recommends using a vented kitchen range hood every time an oven or range is used.
What “vented” means
A vented hood exhausts air through ductwork to the outdoors. A recirculating hood passes air through filters and returns it to the room; it does not provide the same direct outdoor exhaust. If your kitchen currently has no duct route, determine whether one can be installed before selecting the range and hood.
- Identify the proposed hood location and make sure it is centered over the cooking surface.
- Trace a practical duct route to an exterior wall or roof termination.
- Check whether framing, plumbing, wiring or a second floor blocks that route.
- Read both the range and hood instructions for required clearances, duct size and electrical connection.
- Arrange permits or inspections required by your local authority.
Exact airflow, duct dimensions and mounting height vary by hood and kitchen. Do not select a hood solely by its marketing label; confirm that its installation instructions suit your room and the range.

Why indoor-air performance matters
ENERGY STAR’s indoor-air protections guidance identifies gas cooktops and ovens as a major contributor to indoor nitrogen-dioxide exposure and says vented hoods reduce concentrations of cooking particulates. These statements describe the reason to exhaust cooking air outdoors; they do not predict the air quality of a particular home or prove that one range model performs better than another.
Match the cooktop to the way you cook
Count the pans you use at the same time, measure their diameters, and note which tasks happen together. A household that regularly simmers a small saucepan, boils a large pot and uses a skillet needs a different burner arrangement from someone who mostly cooks one pan at a time.
Burner number and layout
- Check the number of burners and their positions, not just the maximum burner count.
- Look for a layout that leaves enough room for your largest pans without handles colliding.
- Consider whether front controls can be reached safely without leaning across hot cookware.
- Compare burner sizes with the bases of your everyday pots and pans.
- Read the model specification for burner output and determine whether the power distribution fits your cooking habits.
A very high-output burner is useful only if you regularly sear, boil large volumes or use cookware that benefits from it. Conversely, a compact burner may be more useful for low, steady simmering. Use the manufacturer’s stated output and arrangement rather than assuming that a premium feature improves every task.

Look at how grates meet and whether they can be lifted without excessive effort. Continuous grates can make it easier to slide cookware across the surface, while separate grates may be lighter to remove for cleaning. Check the care instructions for the exact finish, because grate materials and cleaning restrictions differ.

Choose oven capacity and configuration for real meals
Compare usable oven capacity with the pans you own and the meals you prepare. A stated cubic-foot figure is less useful if a large roasting pan, multiple racks or a tall dish cannot be positioned as you need.
Single oven or double oven
A single cavity generally offers one larger uninterrupted space. A double-oven configuration can let you cook dishes at different temperatures or separate a small dish from a large roast, but each cavity may be smaller. Measure your largest baking sheets, roasting pans and Dutch ovens against the rack positions shown in the model documentation.
Cooking modes
Review the modes you expect to use: conventional baking, broiling, convection, proofing, warming or other listed functions. Treat an added mode as a benefit only when it solves a real problem in your kitchen. Learn whether a mode changes rack placement, preheating or cookware requirements.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsControls and accessibility
- Check whether knobs, touch controls or a combination are easy for everyone who will use the range.
- Confirm that displays can be read from the normal standing position.
- Consider whether controls are protected from accidental contact by children or by leaning over the cooktop.
- Verify that the oven door opens without striking an island, opposite cabinet or walkway.
Understand cleaning and maintenance before you buy
Cleaning systems differ, and no single option is established as best for every household. Read the use-and-care guide for the exact model before treating a cleaning feature as a reason to purchase.

Questions to answer in the manual
- Does the oven use a self-clean, steam-clean or manual-clean process?
- Which racks, trays and accessories may remain inside during a cleaning cycle?
- What products are permitted on the cooktop, burner caps and grates?
- How are spills removed without blocking burner ports or damaging finishes?
- Are there ventilation instructions for a high-temperature cleaning cycle?
Ask who will perform routine tasks such as lifting grates, cleaning burner ports and wiping control areas. A surface that looks simple in a showroom may require more frequent disassembly or special care than expected.

| Comparison area | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Size and fit | Exact width, height, depth, clearances and anti-tip requirements | Nominal width does not guarantee that the range fits the opening or meets surrounding-surface clearances. |
| Delivery access | Doorways, halls, turns, thresholds and packaging removal | A fitting appliance can still be undeliverable through the route to the kitchen. |
| Fuel | Natural gas or LP configuration, approved conversion parts and installer requirements | Incorrect fuel setup is unsafe and can void installation or warranty terms. |
| Electrical | Voltage, frequency, grounding, receptacle location and circuit | Ignition and controls need a compliant electrical supply even on a gas appliance. |
| Cooktop | Burner count, output, sizes, spacing and grate design | The arrangement determines whether your cookware fits and tasks can run simultaneously. |
| Oven | Usable capacity, rack positions, cavity count and cooking modes | Capacity should match your pans, batch size and typical meal schedule. |
| Controls | Location, visibility, cleanability and accessibility | Controls affect daily safety and ease of use more than a rarely used extra mode. |
| Cleaning | Cleaning cycle, surface-care rules and removable parts | Maintenance requirements continue for the life of the appliance. |
| Ventilation | Outdoor duct route, hood placement and model-specific requirements | Gas combustion and cooking pollutants make outdoor exhaust an important planning issue. |
| Ownership cost | Warranty, delivery, installation, conversion, electrical work, ducting and permits | The purchase price is only one part of the installed cost. |
Budget for the installed project, not just the appliance
Current prices, warranty terms and availability depend on the exact model and location, so obtain a current written quote rather than relying on a general price range. Request separate line items for the appliance, delivery, old-appliance removal, gas connection, LP conversion, electrical corrections, hood and ductwork, permits, inspections and finish repairs.
Warranty questions
- What parts and labor are covered, and for how long?
- Are burner components, grates, igniters, control boards and oven cavities treated differently?
- Does installation by an unqualified person affect coverage?
- Who provides service in your area?
- Are labor, travel or diagnostic fees excluded after the initial period?
Keep the model and serial numbers, installation receipt and manuals. They may be needed for service or a warranty claim.
Use a safe installation plan
Installation should follow the model’s instructions and local requirements. Gas connections, pressure testing, LP conversion and any electrical or ductwork changes should be handled by appropriately qualified professionals. LG specifically directs installation and service of its gas ranges to an authorized licensed installer, service agency or gas supplier; that statement applies to LG equipment and should not be generalized to every jurisdiction.
- Before delivery: Complete measurements, verify fuel, confirm the electrical circuit and make sure the hood route is feasible.
- At delivery: Inspect the appliance and packaging for damage before accepting it. Confirm that the delivered model and fuel configuration match the order.
- During installation: Have the installer position the approved connector and shutoff, complete any documented conversion, connect the electrical supply and secure the anti-tip device as specified.
- Testing: The installer should check for gas leaks, verify burner ignition and flame behavior, test oven operation and confirm that the range is level.
- Completion: Keep the manuals, record the model and serial numbers, and obtain any required inspection or permit documentation.
Do not operate a range that smells of gas, has damaged wiring, lacks the required anti-tip protection or shows abnormal flame behavior. Leave the area and contact the appropriate gas emergency service or qualified professional if you suspect a leak.
When a gas range may not be the best fit
If you have not committed to gas, compare the installation implications of an electric or induction range before ordering. ENERGY STAR’s electric-cooking guidance says about 85% of induction heating energy is transferred to cookware, compared with only about one-third for gas cooking products. Those are ENERGY STAR product-guidance figures, not the result of a named independent study. Induction also requires compatible cookware and an appropriate electric range connection, so it is not a drop-in substitute for a gas appliance.
Gas may still suit a household that values its cooking characteristics and already has compliant gas service and outdoor ventilation. The sensible choice depends on the home’s utilities, installation cost, ventilation options, cookware and cooking habits—not on one efficiency figure alone.
