Expect the contractor to review the site and planned use, set drainage and grade, prepare and compact the foundation, place asphalt in planned courses, and roll it for density. Before work begins, get the proposal to specify the base and asphalt work, compacted thicknesses, drainage plan, and how unexpected weak areas or weather delays will be handled. Ask the contractor for project-specific instructions on vehicle access and care after paving; there is no universal reopening time established by the sources cited here.
Before installation: agree on the site plan and scope
The construction approach should fit the driveway’s soil, drainage, access, intended loads, and final grade. Those decisions are best settled before asphalt is delivered, because changes to the foundation or drainage after paving can be difficult to address.

Ask whether the quote includes excavation and removal, preparation of the subgrade or aggregate base, repairs to soft areas, asphalt courses, compaction, and cleanup. Also ask what would trigger a change in scope or price if unsuitable material or drainage issues are discovered. New-home fill can settle; Colorado Asphalt Pavement Association guidance notes that waiting a few months may sometimes be wise, but this is a conditional consideration, not a general requirement for every driveway (Best Practices for the Use of Asphalt Driveways, 2006).

How the installation typically proceeds
1. Establish grade and drainage
The contractor assesses the site and establishes the intended profile and slope so water can drain away from the pavement and surrounding areas. The exact grade or crown is site-specific. Confirm where runoff is meant to go and how the finished driveway will meet the garage, roadway, walkways, and other edges.

- DRIVEWAY RESTORE - Revitalizing your aging, weathered asphalt driveway, giving it a refreshed new finish, and protect the longevity of your driveway
- FLEXIBLE HEAVY-DUTY COATING - Liquid Rubber Driveway Restore waterproof and durable sealant designed to withstand weathering and deterioration
- ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY - Liquid Rubber Driveway Restore is water based and non-toxic, containing no solvents and low VOC's. High quality products that are safe for you and the environment
- EASY TO APPLY - Paint on the application using a conventional brush, roller equipment, or foam squeegee; Apply heavy coats to build up your waterproof membrane
- COVERAGE - Application for Asphalt surface only; Apply a minimum final thickness of 1 gallon per 50 sq ft. It should require 2-3 coats to build up the protective waterproofing membrane
2. Prepare the subgrade and base
The work area is cleared of organic or perishable material and graded to the required profile. Soft or unsuitable spots may need to be excavated and replaced. Soil or granular base is prepared to the specified grade and moisture condition, then compacted to create a firm, even foundation. Proof rolling—checking the prepared area under a loaded vehicle or equipment—can help reveal weak spots before paving. Asphalt Paving Handbook guidance describes base preparation as essential to a stable platform for the asphalt (Base Preparation for New Asphalt Pavements).
A useful question for the contractor is: “What base material and compacted thickness are included, and how will you handle soft spots or drainage problems if you find them?”

- BLACK DRYING – This driveway resurfacer dries black, providing a uniform and attractive finish that complements your property's aesthetic.
3. Confirm the asphalt mix and course plan
Ask what mix and number of courses are proposed, and whether each quoted thickness is measured after compaction. Published guidance offers examples, not one specification for every property:

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Colorado Asphalt Pavement Association guidance says 6 to 8 inches of crushed aggregate base is usually adequate and gives an ordinary residential example of a 2-inch bottom hot-mix asphalt course plus a 1.5-inch surface course. These are recommendations and an example in its 2006 guidance, not universal requirements.
- The Asphalt Institute’s 2004 private-driveway leaflet gives full-depth asphalt examples of 3 inches of base mix plus 2 inches of surface mix, or 4 inches plus 2 inches, for total asphalt thicknesses of 5 or 6 inches.
These examples differ because construction choices depend on soil, climate, drainage, and expected loads. Ask the contractor to explain why the specified design suits your site rather than choosing a thickness solely because it appears in a published example (Colorado APA driveway guidance; Full-Depth Asphalt for Private Driveways).

- ASPHALT-MATCHING FINISH: Colored and textured to blend seamlessly with asphalt for a uniform, professional look.
- DURABLE & FLEXIBLE SEAL: Ideal for cracks and joints in driveways, parking lots, and walkways—remains flexible to resist cracking.
- PREVENTS WATER DAMAGE: Forms a strong, water-resistant seal to block moisture, frost, and erosion.
- ADHERES TO DAMP SURFACES: Can be applied in wet or humid conditions, ensuring reliable repairs in less-than-ideal weather.
- EASY TO APPLY: 10.1 fl oz cartridge fits standard caulking guns for fast, clean application. Made in the USA.
4. Place and compact the asphalt
Hot mix is delivered and spread over the prepared foundation. A paver is generally preferred where access permits; constrained edges or other tight areas may require hand placement. The contractor then compacts the mix with rollers. Compaction is a critical construction operation: the ability to achieve suitable density depends in part on lift thickness, aggregate size, and the roller used. The Asphalt Institute and Asphalt Paving Handbook both emphasize compaction’s role in pavement performance (Engineering FAQs; Compaction chapter).
5. Clean up and confirm access instructions
Before the crew leaves, clarify how and when the driveway may be used, along with any precautions for the surface. The available guidance does not establish one reopening time for all projects; timing depends on the project and conditions. Follow the contractor’s instructions for your installation.

- IDEAL BLACKTOP — Sikaflex black self-leveling caulk is the perfect choice for filling cracks and gaps in asphalt driveways, pavements, walkways, and similar surfaces
- TOUGH AND DURABLE — Formulated to resist weathering and aging, this asphalt sealer features a permanent elasticity that also helps prevent tearing and cracking
- TOUGH AND DURABLE — Formulated to resist weathering and aging, this asphalt sealer features a permanent elasticity that also helps prevent tearing and cracking
- FAST-ACTING — Once your asphalt sealant is applied, required skin time is typically less than 60 minutes, so long as temperature and humidity is moderate
- READY TO USE — Sealant comes ready for use in handy cartridges that fit most standard caulk guns. No mixing is required. Condition cartridge to between 65 °F and 75 °F prior to use for best results
What can affect the work and schedule
Do not assume every installation will follow the same timetable. Weather, site conditions, access, job size, equipment coordination, and the amount of handwork can affect how the work proceeds. Asphalt driveway guidance advises avoiding wet or very cold conditions. Delivery temperature and access for the paving equipment also matter (Full-Depth Asphalt for Private Driveways; Illinois Asphalt Pavement Association: Driveways).
Ask what weather conditions would postpone paving, how the crew will reach the site, and whether tight spaces require hand placement. A written proposal should also explain how the contractor will notify you if the plan changes after excavation exposes a problem.

Compare proposals by what they specify
Use the written scope—not just the total price—to compare contractors. Check that each proposal describes the same work and identifies what is included.

After paving: sealing and routine expectations
Do not plan to sealcoat a newly constructed driveway immediately. The Asphalt Institute states, “It is not necessary to seal the surface of a newly-constructed asphalt concrete driveway” in its 2004 Full-Depth Asphalt for Private Driveways. Its Engineering FAQs say a properly constructed, low-traffic pavement may not need sealing for approximately 2 to 5 years, depending on climate and the quality of the original work. That is general guidance, not a guaranteed maintenance interval or warranty (Full-Depth Asphalt for Private Driveways; Engineering FAQs).
