What to Do With Amaryllis After It Blooms

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After an amaryllis blooms, remove the spent flower stalk—but keep every healthy green leaf. The plant needs bright light, careful watering, and active growth to restore the bulb for a possible future bloom.

When an amaryllis finishes flowering, cut off the spent flower stalk and keep the green leaves growing. Give the plant bright light, water only as the potting mix begins to dry, and fertilize it while it is actively making leaves. The leaves rebuild the bulb’s stored energy; removing healthy foliage too soon is the most common reason a saved bulb performs poorly the following season.

The potted holiday bulb sold as “amaryllis” is usually a Hippeastrum, rather than the botanical genus Amaryllis. The common name is still useful, but the care below applies to the familiar indoor Hippeastrum bulb.

Right after the last flower fades

  1. Remove faded blooms. Pinch or snip off individual flowers as they collapse.
  2. Cut the finished stalk, not the leaves. Once all flowers on a stalk are spent, use clean, sharp pruners or a knife to cut the stalk about 1–2 inches above the bulb. Avoid cutting into the bulb or foliage.
  3. Leave every healthy green leaf in place. Green leaves capture light and send energy back into the bulb. Do not cut them off simply because flowering is over.
  4. Move it into bright light. A sunny or otherwise very bright indoor location supports the active growth that follows bloom.
  5. Resume normal growing care. Water based on the mix’s dryness and begin feeding once leaf growth is underway.

How to water an amaryllis after bloom

There is no reliable “once a week” schedule. A small pot in a sunny, warm room dries far faster than a large pot in a cool room, and potting mixes drain differently.

Check the upper portion of the potting mix with a finger. When it is beginning to dry, water the mix thoroughly until excess drains from the pot. Empty any saucer afterward. Keep water out of the bulb’s crown when practical, and never leave the pot standing in water.

Constantly wet mix encourages bulb and root rot; allowing the plant to become repeatedly bone-dry during active leaf growth weakens it. The goal is evenly sensible care, not a rigid calendar.

Feed it while the leaves are growing

After flowering, an amaryllis becomes a foliage plant for a while. Apply a standard water-soluble or other houseplant fertilizer according to that product’s label while the leaves are actively growing. Fertilizer supports bulb recovery, but it cannot compensate for poor light, a damaged bulb, or chronic watering problems.

Do not increase the dose in hopes of forcing flowers. Excess fertilizer—especially too much nitrogen—can encourage foliage at the expense of flowering and may harm roots. Stop feeding when you intentionally begin the plant’s rest period.

Spring and summer care: rebuild the bulb

The growing season is where next season’s flowers are earned. Keep the plant in its brightest practical location, continue dryness-based watering, and retain the leaves until they naturally yellow during a planned rest.

You can keep the pot indoors, or move it outdoors after your local danger of frost has passed. Acclimate it gradually: start in protected shade, then increase light over roughly 7–10 days. A plant moved straight from indoor light to intense outdoor sun can scorch.

  • Use a pot with drainage holes.
  • Keep the pot watered during hot, dry weather, without keeping it saturated.
  • Use a stable container if a developing stalk makes the plant top-heavy.
  • Stake a leaning flower stalk only if needed, using soft ties that will not cut into it.
  • Bring the plant back inside before temperatures threaten frost.

Outdoor timing depends on your own last- and first-frost dates. Late-May and mid-September examples from northern extension calendars are not universal dates.

How to get amaryllis to bloom again

A healthy, well-grown bulb can rebloom, but it is not guaranteed to flower on the same timetable every year. Light during the growing season, watering, bulb size and health, and how long the plant has rebuilt its reserves all matter.

If you want to reset the cycle and aim for a particular later bloom window, give the bulb a cool, dry rest after its growing season.

  1. Grow it well first. Let the leaves remain in bright conditions through spring and the warm growing period.
  2. Begin the rest in late summer or fall. Stop fertilizing and reduce or withhold water so the foliage can yellow and dry naturally.
  3. Remove only dead foliage. When leaves are yellow or brown and dry, cut them away.
  4. Rest the bulb cool and dry. Extension protocols vary: examples range from roughly 40–55°F for about 6–10 weeks. Choose a protected, dry place that does not freeze.
  5. Restart growth. After the rest, place the pot in warmth and bright light and resume watering. New growth signals that the cycle is beginning again.

That cool, dry interval is a timing tool, not the same as the mandatory cold-chilling requirement associated with tulips or daffodils. Hippeastrum does not need a tulip-style chill in order to flower. Exact rest temperatures and durations differ among reputable growing protocols, so treat the ranges above as workable examples rather than a universal formula.

If it does not rebloom

Start by reviewing the preceding growing season rather than assuming the bulb needs more fertilizer. Common causes include insufficient light, drying the plant out too early, inadequate summer watering, waterlogged roots, overly rich potting conditions, and excessive nitrogen feeding.

Give the bulb another complete season of strong leaf growth before judging it. A bulb that produced leaves but no flower stalk may simply need more time to restore its reserves.

When red marks may be a problem

Not every red streak on an amaryllis is disease. However, enlarging, sunken red spots on leaves or flower stalks—especially when accompanied by distorted growth—can indicate red blotch, also called leaf scorch. Avoid persistently wet, shaded conditions and use clean potting material when repotting or propagating. A heavily infected bulb may be best discarded rather than carried forward.

A note for warm-climate gardens

This care plan is for the typical potted indoor amaryllis grown in temperate-climate homes. In frost-free or nearly frost-free areas, including parts of Florida, bulbs grown outdoors in beds may keep foliage for much of the year and follow a different seasonal rhythm. Do not impose a northern indoor forcing calendar on an established warm-climate garden planting.

The simple rule to remember

After the flowers are gone, the plant has not finished its job. Remove the spent stalk, preserve the green leaves, and treat the amaryllis as a bright-light houseplant until it has had time to rebuild its bulb.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I cut back amaryllis after it blooms?

Cut the finished flower stalk about 1–2 inches above the bulb after all flowers on that stalk have faded. Leave healthy green leaves attached.

How often should I water amaryllis after flowering?

Water when the upper potting mix is beginning to dry, then let excess water drain away. Do not use a fixed weekly schedule or leave the pot in standing water.

Should I fertilize an amaryllis after it blooms?

Yes. Once flowering is over and the leaves are actively growing, use a standard houseplant fertilizer according to its label. Stop feeding when you begin a deliberate rest period.

Will my amaryllis bloom again next year?

A well-grown bulb may bloom again, but it is not guaranteed. Bright light and healthy leaf growth through the growing season are especially important. Many gardeners use a cool, dry rest in late summer or fall to help control timing.

Does amaryllis need chilling to rebloom?

No. Unlike tulips and daffodils, the indoor Hippeastrum commonly called amaryllis does not require a long cold chill to flower. A cool, dry rest is commonly used to reset and schedule its cycle after active growth.

The Bottom Line

Cut the old flower stalk, not the green leaves. Bright light, careful watering, and labeled houseplant fertilizer during active growth give a saved amaryllis its best chance of blooming again.
