Stop using a power tool or battery as soon as the applicable U.S. recall notice directs you to stop. Then identify the exact model and other markings, confirm that your item is in the affected range, and follow only the remedy and return or disposal process in that notice. A recall may require a free repair, inspection, refund, replacement, a collection kit, or controlled disposal. Do not improvise a repair, ship a lithium-ion battery by an unapproved method, place it in a normal battery box, or rely on a retailer’s ordinary return policy.
This guide explains the process for U.S. consumers and job sites. The individual Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) notice and its manufacturer instructions control the hazard, covered identifiers, remedy, packaging, transportation, and disposal requirements.

1. Stop work and make the recalled item safe
If the notice says to stop using the tool, stop immediately—even if it appears to work normally and even if you are waiting for a label, repair appointment, or replacement. Official recall notices for power tools and batteries commonly direct immediate stop-use because a failure can occur without warning.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsRemove the tool from service
- Turn the tool off, unplug it, and remove a removable battery if the notice does not prohibit that action.
- Do not test it again, run it “one last time,” or let another worker use it.
- Mark it clearly as “recalled—do not use” and place it where employees, children, and visitors cannot pick it up.
- If the tool is mounted, installed, or part of a work vehicle, isolate it in place until the notice tells you how to remove or return it safely.
For a battery recall, do not charge, discharge, connect, puncture, open, crush, or use the battery in another device. If the battery is hot, swollen, leaking, smoking, hissing, or giving off an odor, move people away and call emergency services if there is an active fire or immediate danger. Do not handle a damaged battery merely to make it easier to ship.

Preserve information before moving anything
Take photographs of the tool, battery, labels, charger, packaging, and visible damage if it is safe to do so. Record when and where you bought it, the seller, purchase date, and any incident or injury. Keep receipts and work-order records. These details can help the manufacturer match your item and document a claim, but they do not replace the identifier check required by the notice.
2. Find the exact recall notice
Search the CPSC recall database or the federal Recalls.gov portal using the manufacturer, product name, model, and “recall.” Open the complete notice, not a social-media summary or a retailer alert. A recall can cover only a particular production range, date code, serial break, component, or market.
Check every identifier the notice names
- Model or catalog number: Often printed on a rating plate, handle label, battery label, or charger.
- Serial number or serial break: Compare the full number and the notice’s inclusion or exclusion rules.
- Date code or manufacturing date: Some notices cover only batteries or tools made during specified periods.
- Brand and configuration: A visually similar model, kit, color, or accessory may not be included—or may have a different notice.
- Country and seller: Confirm that the notice applies to your U.S. purchase and distribution channel.
For example, the 2025 Milwaukee chainsaw notice identified catalog number 2826-20 and a specific serial-number break. A drill-related notice may require both a model number and a date-code check. Matching only the brand or product name is not enough.

If the label is missing or unreadable
Do not guess. Stop using the item and contact the manufacturer through the telephone number, website form, or other contact listed in the official notice. Provide photographs and your purchase information. Ask the representative to confirm whether the product is covered and to document the answer.
3. Understand what remedy the notice offers
You do not normally choose among repair, refund, replacement, and disposal. The notice determines which remedy applies to the exact identifier you own. CPSC’s remedy dashboard groups recalls by refund, repair, replacement, disposal, no remedy available, and new-instruction categories; a single recall can appear in more than one category, and the counts can change daily.
| Remedy in the notice | What you generally do | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Free repair or inspection and repair | Register or contact the manufacturer, then use its approved service or shipping process. | Do not open the tool or install parts yourself unless the notice expressly instructs consumers to do so. |
| Refund | Follow the notice’s proof-of-purchase, registration, and return requirements. | The refund may require return of the product, battery, or a specified component. |
| Replacement | Register the affected item and return it as instructed before the replacement is issued, if required. | Do not assume a replacement is interchangeable until the manufacturer confirms it. |
| Return or collection kit | Use the prepaid label, packaging, or dedicated collection kit supplied or approved by the firm. | Ordinary parcel shipping and standard battery mail-back programs may be prohibited. |
| Disposal | Follow the notice and CPSC hazardous-waste guidance for the exact product. | Recalled lithium-ion batteries generally must not enter trash, curbside recycling, or ordinary used-battery boxes. |
As a five-year snapshot accessed in 2026, CPSC’s dashboard reported 1,097 refunds, 533 repairs, 339 replacements, and 23 disposals. Those figures describe all products in the dashboard, not power tools alone, and they are not a stable trend because the data change and recalls with multiple remedies are counted in each applicable category.

4. Register and arrange the remedy
- Open the official recall notice and use the manufacturer contact or registration path listed there.
- Enter the exact model, serial number, date code, address, and contact information requested.
- Describe whether you have the tool, battery, charger, kit, or multiple affected items.
- Ask what to do while waiting, whether the item must be disconnected or stored in a particular way, and whether the firm supplies packaging or transportation.
- Save the confirmation number, emails, photographs, shipping instructions, and the name and date of any phone conversation.
Do not substitute a retailer’s normal return policy for the recall process. A routine return may send the product back into ordinary inventory without the controls required for a hazardous recalled item. The manufacturer may also need the serial number to issue the correct repair or compensation.
For a construction company or shared shop
Assign one person to inventory all tools, batteries, chargers, and kits of the affected model. Record each identifier and location, quarantine every matching item, and notify employees, subcontractors, and equipment custodians. Keep a copy of the notice with the quarantine log. If a tool has been loaned out, contact the borrower and require confirmation that it has been removed from service.
5. Return a tool or battery using the approved method
The return route is part of the safety remedy. Follow the notice’s instructions exactly, including packaging, labeling, carrier, and timing.
When the firm supplies a prepaid label or packaging
- Use only the box, inner packaging, label, and documents supplied or specifically approved by the firm.
- Do not combine unrelated batteries or accessories unless the instructions say they belong in the same package.
- Do not leave a package containing a recalled battery at a carrier location unless the notice and carrier instructions authorize that shipment.
- Obtain a tracking number and retain proof of acceptance.
When a collection kit is required
Some battery recalls use a dedicated collection kit rather than ordinary parcel shipping. The 2025 SKIL 40V battery recall, for example, directed consumers to receive a collection kit and then obtain the selected refund or replacement after the battery was returned. Wait for the kit and use it as instructed; do not improvise a box, wrap terminals in a way the notice does not approve, or send the battery through a standard mail-back program.
When the notice calls for an in-person return
Confirm the destination, hours, acceptance rules, and whether the location accepts the specific recalled item. Keep the tool isolated during transport. Secure it so it cannot move, activate, short, or be damaged. If the notice does not explain how to transport a damaged or swollen battery, stop and contact the manufacturer or local emergency authority for instructions rather than taking it in a personal vehicle.

- Call your local household hazardous-waste center before visiting. Ask specifically whether it accepts recalled lithium-ion batteries or devices, not merely ordinary used batteries.
- Explain the product, battery chemistry if known, recall status, condition, size, and quantity. Ask about packaging, drop-off hours, limits, and transportation rules.
- If the center does not accept it, contact your municipality or solid-waste authority for the next approved route.
- Follow the receiving program’s instructions exactly. Do not place the battery in trash, curbside or general recycling, or a standard used-battery collection box unless the responsible authority explicitly says that route is approved for the recalled item.
Local acceptance is jurisdiction-specific. A program that accepts ordinary household batteries may reject recalled batteries because they require different handling. Never assume that a commercial battery drop-off, retailer bin, or mail-back envelope is suitable.
Do not sell, donate, or give away the recalled product
A recall is not resolved by transferring ownership. Do not list the tool online, sell it at a yard sale, donate it, lend it to a worker, or give it to a recycler that has not confirmed acceptance. Keep the item quarantined until the official remedy or disposal route is complete.
7. What not to do
- Do not perform a DIY repair. Buying a switch, brake, battery cell, guard, or other part is not the same as the manufacturer’s recall remedy.
- Do not reuse an affected battery. Removing it from the recalled tool and putting it in another tool does not remove the hazard.
- Do not ship by an unapproved route. Lithium-ion batteries have transportation requirements that depend on their condition and packaging.
- Do not put it in a normal battery bin. Recalled batteries may need controlled hazardous-waste handling.
- Do not rely on a partial identifier. A model match without the required serial or date-code match does not establish coverage.
- Do not discard documentation. Registration records, tracking information, and photos can be needed if the remedy fails.
8. Examples of why prompt action matters
Chainsaw brake failure
In a 2025 notice, CPSC reported a recall of about 90,860 Milwaukee chainsaws in the United States. The notice identified two reports in which the chain brake did not activate, including one laceration injury. The practical lesson is not to test a suspected chainsaw to see whether its brake works; identify the catalog and serial information and use the stated repair or return process.

Battery thermal incidents
A 2025 SKIL battery recall reported 100 thermal-incident reports, including eight reports of minor burns and/or smoke inhalation and 49 reports of related property damage. A battery with no visible damage can still be covered. Stop charging and using it, verify the model and date code, and follow the collection-kit or other remedy instructions in the notice.
9. Compare the instructions before you act
When a notice lists more than one remedy or covers several configurations, compare the instructions against your exact item rather than choosing the most convenient option. Check five points:
- Coverage: Is your complete model, serial range, date code, component, and U.S. distribution covered?
- Remedy: Does your identifier qualify for repair, inspection, refund, replacement, return, or disposal?
- Responsibility for transport: Does the manufacturer send a label, packaging, or collection kit, or direct you to a particular location?
- Registration: Must you register online, provide proof of purchase, or speak with a representative before anything is shipped?
- Waiting instructions: What does the notice require while you wait, including isolation, charging restrictions, or storage precautions?
These are not ordinary product choices. The notice determines which options are available, and a remedy for a tool may differ from the remedy for its battery or charger. Keep separate records if several items are covered.

10. Questions to ask the manufacturer
Have the notice number and every product marking available before calling. Ask the representative to clarify:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Whether the specific serial number or date code is included or excluded.
- Whether the battery, charger, accessory, and tool must be returned together.
- Whether the item may be moved, disconnected, or transported, especially if it is damaged.
- Which packaging, carrier, label, collection kit, or drop-off site is approved.
- What refund amount, replacement model, or repair timing applies.
- How to document multiple affected units at one address or business.
- What to do if the supplied label, kit, or replacement does not arrive.
Write down the representative’s name, date, case number, and instructions. If the answer conflicts with the published notice, ask for written confirmation or use the contact channel shown in the notice.
11. If the manufacturer does not respond
Keep your registration confirmation, call logs, emails, shipping receipt, tracking number, and photographs. Check the notice for updated contact information and retry through the listed channel. If the firm is unresponsive, refuses the stated remedy, or the process fails, use the complaint route provided on the relevant CPSC recall page or in the CPSC Recall Handbook. Include the notice number, product identifiers, dates, and a concise description of what happened.
If there has been an injury, fire, property damage, or other incident, preserve evidence and report it through the appropriate CPSC channel. In an emergency involving fire, smoke, or immediate danger, call emergency services first.
12. A printable recall-response checklist
- Confirm that the notice applies to the United States and to your product category.
- Stop use when the notice directs it; disconnect or isolate the item safely.
- Photograph and record model, catalog, serial, and date-code markings.
- Compare the complete identifier with affected ranges and exclusions.
- Register with or contact the manufacturer listed in the notice.
- Follow the stated repair, inspection, refund, replacement, return, collection-kit, or disposal remedy.
- Use only approved packaging, carrier, transport, and drop-off instructions.
- Do not repair, sell, donate, lend, reuse, or place the recalled item in ordinary waste or battery recycling.
- Confirm local hazardous-waste acceptance before taking a recalled lithium-ion battery anywhere.
- Save all confirmations and escalate a failed remedy through CPSC’s complaint route.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I stop using a recalled power tool immediately?
Yes, when the CPSC or manufacturer notice directs stop-use. Turn it off, unplug it, and isolate it without testing it again. For a recalled battery, do not charge, discharge, or install it in another device while waiting for instructions.
How do I know whether my tool is actually covered?
Match every identifier named in the notice: brand, model or catalog number, full serial number or serial break, date code, configuration, and U.S. distribution. A similar-looking tool or a model-only match is not enough. If a label is missing, contact the manufacturer listed in the notice.

Can I return a recalled tool to the store where I bought it?
Use the recall process rather than the retailer’s ordinary return policy unless the notice specifically directs a store return. The manufacturer may need the serial number and may require controlled packaging, a collection kit, a designated repair center, or a particular refund process.
Can I repair the recalled tool myself?
No, not unless the official notice expressly instructs consumers to perform that repair. Buying a replacement switch, brake, guard, cell, or other part is not the same as the manufacturer’s free recall remedy and could leave the hazard unresolved.
Can I mail a recalled lithium-ion battery through a normal battery program?
Do not assume so. Use only the packaging, carrier, label, or collection kit approved in the notice. Recalled batteries may not be accepted by ordinary mail-back programs, parcel services, used-battery boxes, or retailer bins.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Where can I dispose of a recalled lithium-ion battery?
First call a local household hazardous-waste center and ask whether it accepts recalled lithium-ion batteries or devices. Confirm packaging, quantity, hours, and transport rules. If it refuses, ask your municipality or solid-waste authority for an approved route. Never place it in trash or curbside recycling.
What if the recalled battery is swollen, hot, leaking, smoking, or damaged?
Keep people away and do not handle it merely to package or transport it. If there is an active fire or immediate danger, call emergency services. Otherwise contact the manufacturer and local authorities for specific handling and transport instructions.
What should a business do if it has several recalled tools?
Assign one person to inventory every matching tool, battery, charger, and kit; record identifiers and locations; quarantine the items; notify workers and borrowers; and keep the notice with the log. Register each item as required and retain all case numbers, shipping records, and remedy confirmations.
What can I do if the company does not honor the recall?
Keep your registration, correspondence, photographs, receipts, and tracking records. Retry the official contact channel, then submit a complaint through the route linked on the CPSC recall page or in the CPSC Recall Handbook. Include the notice number, identifiers, dates, and the failed remedy details.

The Bottom Line
Stop using a recalled power tool when instructed, verify every required identifier, and follow the exact manufacturer and CPSC remedy. Use only approved return packaging or collection kits. For disposal, confirm in advance that a U.S. household hazardous-waste program accepts recalled lithium-ion batteries; never improvise a repair, shipment, battery drop-off, sale, donation, or disposal route.
