What to Do With a Broken Television When You Can’t Fix It

Check warranty coverage first, then use a confirmed local e-waste program, retailer or manufacturer take-back, certified recycler, or paid haul-away service—never assume a broken TV belongs in curbside recycling or ordinary trash.

Do not put a broken television in a curbside recycling bin, and do not assume it belongs in ordinary household trash. First check whether a warranty, protection plan, or insurance claim applies. Then identify the TV type and size, and confirm acceptance, fees, damage rules, and pickup options with your local e-waste or household-hazardous-waste program.

If local disposal is inconvenient, check the retailer delivering your replacement, the TV manufacturer, a certified electronics recycler, or a paid haul-away service. CRT televisions and TVs with cracked or shattered screens need special care.

Before you dispose of the television

Disposing of the TV too soon can complicate a warranty, retailer protection-plan, or insurance claim. Before arranging recycling or removal:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Check the manufacturer’s warranty, retailer protection plan, extended warranty, credit-card protection, renters insurance, or homeowners insurance.
  • Photograph the television, model number, serial number, and visible damage. Save the receipt and claim documents.
  • Ask the provider whether it needs to inspect the television or receive proof of disposal.
  • If the TV still turns on, sign out of streaming services, remove saved accounts, and perform a factory reset where possible.
  • Remove USB drives, memory cards, cable cards, streaming devices, game consoles, and other accessories.
  • Keep the remote, stand, power cable, and wall mount separate if they may be reused. Ask the recycler whether it wants accessories included.

A smart TV may retain account credentials, Wi-Fi details, app sessions, viewing information, and connected-device data. A reset is a sensible privacy precaution, but also remove the TV from your account-device lists and change important passwords if the television cannot be reset.

  • Comfortable View with tilt range from +10° to -5°.

The EPA recommends deleting personal information from electronics and removing batteries where possible. Do not put loose lithium-ion batteries or devices containing them in household garbage or ordinary recycling bins.

Is the television worth repairing?

Try only low-risk checks before deciding. Test another wall outlet, temporarily bypass a power strip or surge protector, try a known-good detachable power cable if the model uses one, disconnect external devices, and use the TV’s physical power button rather than the remote. Do not open the rear panel or attempt electrical repairs yourself.

A repair diagnosis may be worthwhile for an expensive, unusually large, professional, vintage, or specialty television. It may also make sense when the problem is an external accessory rather than the TV itself. For many lower-cost modern televisions, a major panel replacement can approach the cost of a comparable replacement, but that is a practical cost comparison—not a diagnosis. Ask a qualified repair shop for an estimate before writing off a valuable model.

A working but unwanted TV may still have resale or donation value. A rare CRT, desirable retro-gaming display, or professional monitor may be more valuable to a specialist than to a general recycler.

Identify the type of TV

Type How to recognize it Disposal considerations
CRT Deep, box-shaped, glass “tube” television; very heavy. CRT funnel glass generally contains lead. Use a program that explicitly accepts CRT televisions.
LCD/LED Thin flat-screen television. “LED TV” usually means an LCD panel with LED backlighting. Handle as electronic waste; confirm size and screen-damage rules.
Plasma Flat-screen television, often heavier than a similarly sized LCD. Confirm weight, size limits, and pickup requirements before transport.
OLED Thin flat-screen display with self-lighting pixels. Use an e-waste route. Treat a cracked panel as fragile and potentially hazardous to move.

According to the EPA’s CRT guidance, CRT glass generally contains lead and receives special treatment when discarded or sent for recycling. State requirements can be stricter than federal rules. Do not leave a CRT beside the curb unless your local authority specifically permits that collection method.

Best disposal options, in order

1. Start with your local program

Contact your city sanitation department, county solid-waste authority, state environmental agency, household-hazardous-waste facility, municipal transfer station, or scheduled e-waste collection event. The EPA advises checking local solid-waste and household-hazardous-waste requirements, because electronics acceptance and fees vary by location.

Ask these questions before loading the TV:

  • Do you accept televisions, not just phones and computers?
  • Do you accept this type and approximate screen size?
  • Are CRTs, plasma TVs, or broken and cracked screens accepted?
  • Is there a fee, appointment requirement, proof-of-residence rule, or item limit?
  • Is residential pickup available, and does it include stairs or interior removal?
  • How should the television be wrapped or prepared?

2. Ask the retailer selling the replacement

Retailer haul-away can be practical when a new TV is being delivered, particularly if the old television is large or wall-mounted. Terms are not national rules and can differ by store, state, product size, delivery order, and damage condition.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best Buy’s published information says most U.S. stores offer in-store electronics recycling, generally with a household limit of three qualified items per day. TVs and computer monitors are generally limited to two per household per day. The cited FAQ says Connecticut and Pennsylvania stores do not accept TVs or monitors through the described in-store program, and some states impose fees or special rules. TVs outside stated size criteria may require haul-away.

When checked on August 16, 2026, Best Buy listed $59.99 for haul-away and recycling of a major appliance or TV connected with delivery of a replacement product. Verify the current price and exact conditions in your cart or with the delivery team at Best Buy’s recycling FAQ and its TV and appliance haul-away information. Do not assume every TV is accepted for free.

3. Check the manufacturer

Manufacturer programs may offer a collection locator, mail-back service, state-specific arrangements, or partner drop-off sites. Eligibility is usually limited by brand, product category, location, and size. Confirm specifically that the program accepts a broken television.

4. Use a certified electronics recycler

For a controlled processing route, look for a recycler certified to a recognized standard such as R2 or e-Stewards. The EPA identifies these standards as recognized electronics-recycling certifications. Certification can provide greater confidence in documented downstream handling, worker-safety procedures, transportation, and processing; it does not guarantee free service, local pickup, or that every material becomes a new product.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ask the recycler where the TV will be processed, whether it accepts your model and damage condition, and whether it can provide a receipt or recycling certificate.

5. Reuse, sell for parts, or donate only with approval

A fully nonfunctional TV should generally be recycled rather than donated. Donation may be appropriate when the TV works, has a minor disclosed defect, or a repair nonprofit, school, theater group, maker, or vintage-electronics enthusiast has agreed to take it as-is.

Do not leave a broken TV at a charity donation center without confirmation. Many charities are not equipped or contracted to handle large e-waste. You can also list a unit locally as “broken TV for parts,” offer a working CRT to a retro-gaming community, or give away the stand, remote, speakers, or wall mount separately. Giving it away does not guarantee responsible disposal, so disclose the condition and choose a recipient who has a legitimate reuse plan.

6. Pay for removal when labor is the real problem

Paid haul-away is often the safest choice when you have no vehicle, live upstairs, have a 65-inch-or-larger TV, are dealing with a heavy CRT, or need removal from inside the home. Get an all-in quote and ask:

  • Does the company recycle the TV or merely remove it?

  • Will it accept CRTs, cracked screens, or water- and fire-damaged electronics?
  • Can it provide a disposal receipt?
  • Can it identify the downstream recycler?

There is no universal 2026 price. Cost depends on local disposal charges, volume, labor, access, distance, and the TV’s condition. A free drop-off may cost more overall if it requires a truck rental or paid help.

What to do with a cracked or shattered TV

Call the receiving facility before moving a damaged screen and describe the damage accurately. The usual concern is broken glass, an unstable structure, exposed components, and whether the facility is equipped to accept it—not that every flat-screen contains a liquid hazard.

  • Keep children and pets away from loose glass.
  • Wear gloves and closed-toe shoes when handling the unit.
  • Do not drill, smash, tape aggressively, or dismantle the panel.
  • Do not put the TV or loose glass in a recycling cart.
  • Ask whether the facility requires wrapping, a box, pallet, or specialized pickup.

If the television is smoking, hot, sparking, swollen, leaking, or producing an unusual odor, keep away and call emergency services or the fire department for an active electrical or fire hazard. Unplug it only if this can be done safely without touching damaged wiring or standing in water. Then ask the local hazardous-waste authority for handling instructions.

How to move and transport it

Small flat-screen

Use two people when the unit is awkward. Carry it upright where possible, hold the frame rather than pressing the panel, and secure it so it cannot slide or tip. Keep it dry and protected from extreme heat. The original box or a suitable moving box is preferable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Large flat-screen

Use two or more people or arrange professional pickup. Remove the stand if it makes the TV unstable. Wrap it in a moving blanket without pressing on the screen, and secure it upright against a vehicle wall. Do not transport it loose in an open truck.

CRT

Never move a heavy CRT alone. Use a rated dolly and straps, keep the television upright, and do not drop or strike the glass. Confirm that the receiving facility accepts CRTs before loading it.

If the TV is wall-mounted or located upstairs, ask whether the service includes unmounting, stair carries, and removal from inside the home. Apartment residents should follow building rules and never leave a television in a shared trash room or beside a dumpster without written approval from management and the hauler.

Can a broken TV go in the trash?

Only if your local waste authority explicitly says it may. Many jurisdictions restrict or ban televisions in landfills, and some trash haulers reject them even where state law does not impose a blanket ban. Some communities accept TVs only through a special bulky-waste or e-waste procedure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Curbside recycling programs generally do not accept televisions. Electronics can contaminate the recycling stream, and a TV left at the curb may be returned or improperly handled. The EPA maintains information on state electronics laws and disposal restrictions in its electronics legislation summary, but local rules should be checked directly because requirements change.

A quick decision tree

  1. Does it still work? Sell, donate, or give it away honestly if an approved recipient wants it.
  2. Is it under warranty, protected, or insured? Contact the provider before disposal.
  3. Is it a CRT? Use a recycler that explicitly handles CRT televisions.
  4. Is the screen cracked or unsafe to move? Disclose the damage and arrange specialized pickup.
  5. Can you transport it safely? Check your local government drop-off program first.
  6. No suitable local option? Check the retailer, manufacturer, certified recycler, then a paid haul-away company.

Final checklist

  • TV type and approximate size confirmed.
  • Warranty, protection plan, and insurance checked.
  • Model, serial number, photos, and receipts saved.
  • Accounts removed and factory reset completed where possible.
  • Facility acceptance, fees, appointments, and damage rules confirmed.
  • Pickup terms or transport route arranged.
  • TV secured upright and moved with enough help.
  • Receipt, weight ticket, recycling certificate, or itemized invoice retained if needed.

Recycling is generally preferable to uncontrolled disposal, but collected electronics may be reused, refurbished, dismantled, or processed for material recovery. The EPA notes that it does not track the downstream path of every individual product, so ask providers for their actual handling process rather than assuming every component will be recycled.
