Brown tips are a symptom, not a diagnosis. On a houseplant, they can follow improper watering, cold drafts, insect activity, excess fertilizer or accumulated salts; some plants also react to particular water conditions or low winter humidity. Check the plant and its growing conditions before changing its care. If the browning is on an outdoor evergreen, winter drought and wind may be more relevant than houseplant advice.
How to investigate brown tips on a houseplant
Start with what you can observe: the plant’s identity, soil moisture, watering history, recent changes in its location or care, and any visible pests. A brown tip by itself does not establish which factor is responsible, and there is no reliable watering schedule that suits every species.
- Check the soil and watering history. Feel the growing medium rather than watering by the calendar. A finger check or an optional soil-moisture meter can help you assess moisture, but neither identifies every possible cause. Pennsylvania State Extension includes both underwatering and overfertilization among possible causes of dead leaf tips or margins.
- Review recent conditions. Consider whether the plant has been exposed to a cold draft or another environmental change. Look over the leaves for signs of insect activity. Illinois Extension lists improper watering, cold drafts, insect attack and excess fertilizer as possible causes of houseplant problems.
- Check fertilizer use and the pot. If you have been fertilizing heavily or see a buildup on the container, accumulated fertilizer salts may be worth considering. Illinois Extension recommends scrubbing the pot edges and flushing the soil with clear water when salt accumulation is suspected after other issues have been considered. Continue to meet the plant’s own watering needs rather than adopting a fixed flush or watering schedule.
- Consider water sensitivity only if the species fits. Illinois Extension discusses fluoride sensitivity in peace lilies and some other tropical houseplants, and notes distilled water as a possible remedy. This is not a reason to assume tap water is harming every plant.
- Account for dry indoor air in winter. Some humidity-loving plants, including ferns, carnivorous plants and Norfolk pine, may be affected by low indoor humidity. Minnesota Extension suggests grouping plants, using a pebble tray with water below the tops of the pebbles, or growing the plant in a terrarium.
Why a brown tip is not a reason to treat immediately
Do not reach for fertilizer or household pesticide just because a leaf tip has turned brown. Sarah Vogel, a horticulture educator with Illinois Extension, warns against the reflex to reach for a remedy when a leaf yellows or develops a brown spot. A treatment chosen without evidence can fail to address the cause; first look for a care, environmental or pest issue that fits what you observe.
If the plant is an outdoor evergreen
Arborvitae, holly, rhododendron and other landscape evergreens face different conditions from indoor plants. Pennsylvania State Extension explains that drought combined with cold, windy winter weather can cause water loss and browning. In extended dry periods, water the plant to reduce drought stress; the extension recommends deep watering rather than frequent, shallow watering.

It delivers reliable moisture data with minimal soil displacement, keeping your plants’ delicate roots safe and undisturbed while you monitor their hydration.
- Pristine Condition & Essential Care: To ensure you receive a factory-fresh instrument, each XLUX meter includes a custom anti-abrasion protective sleeve. This inner liner prevents micro-scratches during transit, maintaining the integrity of the 304 stainless steel probe. Usage Tips: 1. Soil Use Only (no liquids). 2. Temporary Test: Insert, read, and remove within 5 minutes. 3. Maintenance: Always wipe the probe clean and store it in its protective sleeve after use.
- Use mulch appropriately: Pennsylvania State Extension recommends a 3–4 inch layer, kept clear of the root flare.
- Do not expect brown tips or limbs that have died to recover. If pruning is needed, limit it to fully dead portions and consider the plant’s context.
When to seek species-specific help
This guide cannot identify an individual plant’s problem without details such as its species, location, growing medium, watering history and symptoms. If browning is widespread or spreading, appears alongside lesions or dieback, or continues after you correct a clearly evidenced environmental issue, consult a local extension service or a qualified horticulturist for advice tailored to the plant.
