If road construction blocks your driveway, do not drive around barriers or enter a closed work zone. Ask the crew or the project contact what access is safe, whether the restriction affects pedestrians as well as vehicles, and when the current work stage is expected to end. Then arrange a permitted route, temporary access, or alternate parking that fits your situation.
First, find the project contact and confirm what is closed
Check the work-zone signs, project notice or permit board for the contractor, road authority and contact details. If the project is in West Sussex, the county’s One.network roadworks map can show planned and current work, its purpose and duration, the promoter, contractor, contact details and diversions. Elsewhere, use the road authority’s official project page or contact shown at the site.
Ask the crew or contact these questions before choosing a route:
- Is the driveway or access route closed to vehicles, pedestrians, or both?
- Is the restriction in place continuously, or only during a particular work operation?
- Where is the safe pedestrian route or signed diversion?
- How long is this stage expected to last, and when is access expected to reopen?
- Is a temporary vehicle crossing, contractor-installed ramp or plate, or alternate parking available?
Access can differ by mode: a crew may be able to maintain a pedestrian route even when cars cannot enter a driveway. West Sussex County Council’s guidance says, “Access should be maintained where possible,” but the safe arrangement depends on the site and work underway.

Stay outside the work zone and follow the signs
Do not drive through a signed closure, move barriers, or improvise a crossing over an excavation. Follow posted signs and the crew’s instructions. Dorset Council’s guidance says drivers must obey the signs and describes driving through a closed road as an offence under its local rules; the legal effect elsewhere depends on the signs and local traffic orders. A consumer curb ramp may help with a suitable shallow level change only if the crew confirms it is safe and permitted. It is not a substitute for a bridge over a trench, and residents should not install road plates.
Plan for vehicles, deliveries and essential access
Move a vehicle before the restriction begins
If you receive advance notice and it is safe and practical, move your vehicle before driveway access is interrupted. Ask the project contact where you may park instead; alternate parking is not guaranteed. Dorset advises considering other parking when vehicle access is needed, and Peel Region says it works with the municipality on alternative parking in certain driveway repair situations.

Ask about a safe temporary crossing
Ask whether the contractor can provide a temporary vehicle crossing, ramp or plate for the specific work stage. Peel Region says its contractor may provide metal plates when a trench blocks driveway entry or exit. That is a contractor-provided site measure, not a plate for a resident to buy or install. Also ask how deliveries and waste collection will be handled while the usual access is unavailable.
Tell the project team about special needs early
Contact the project team as soon as you know about a time-critical trip, fixed appointment, mobility requirement, medical or care need, or a delivery that cannot be rescheduled. Give the date and time access is needed and explain the constraint. Peel Region specifically asks residents with a required driveway-access date or special access need to contact its project team. The available accommodation depends on the project, so ask what can be arranged rather than assuming the crew knows your household’s needs.

Why advance notice may differ
There is no single notice period established across these locations and projects. Dorset Council says planned closure organizers are expected to put up advance warning signs at least one week beforehand and notify affected properties along the closure; emergency closures may happen without notice. Dorset also says some urgent work, such as responding to gas leaks, burst mains or hazardous potholes, requires immediate action. West Sussex notes emergency work may begin before the authority is informed.
As a separate, project-specific example, a Wisconsin Department of Transportation specification issued in 2025 requires 48 hours’ notice before restricting access and 72 hours before closing access. For a specified subgrade excavation, it allows a vehicle driveway closure of up to 24 hours. These are terms for that project, not general standards. Dorset’s guidance also says planned closures lasting more than five consecutive calendar days must be advertised in the local-area press; that statement applies to Dorset, not to every road authority.

If access remains blocked or the plan is unclear
If the crew has not offered a safe plan, the restriction lasts beyond what the project communicated, or you cannot reach the named contact, contact the project owner or local road authority using its official contact route. For an immediate threat to life, contact your local emergency service. For a non-emergency access problem, provide a concise record of what happened rather than entering the closed area to investigate.
- Note the dates and times access was blocked and any reopening estimate you were given.
- Keep project notices and messages.
- Photograph signs or the obstruction only from a safe public place.
- Explain which access is affected, what safe alternative you asked for, and any time-critical need.
The rules and arrangements depend on the project, jurisdiction, signs and work conditions. These examples do not establish a universal right to a particular access arrangement, compensation, or complaint remedy; ask the local road authority about the rules and options for your site.
